The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 02 (Dec 2022 Wk 02) Spotify Playlist

My selection of the best releases this week (Jan 2022 Wk 02)
In no particular order other than tempo.

Well what a week this has been, almost certainly one of the worst weeks for good quality new releases, even worse than the festive period. I am struggling to even choose twelve good enough to feature in this week's "The Dirty Dozen" so I'm considering not posting "The Bleeding Edge" this week as it would be scraping the barrel. That's no slight on the tunes chosen as I think they are all worthy entries even though the short list this week was extremely short!

There are a couple of good tracks on Don-E's new EP which may have appeared but the EP is not available on Spotify along with a few others I could have selected had they been available.

Last week I put my neck on the block suggesting that Lindsey Webster would almost certainly be the SoulStrutter Selection of the Week this week unless something else very special materialised. I'm afraid for her it has, in the form of the new single by The Temptations "Calling Your Name" which has really grown and grown on me with each hearing. I've been fortunate enough to hear the full album due on 28 Jan and this, for me, is easily the standout track, but there are a few other good tracks to look forward to e,g.  "Breaking My Back" and "Time For The People" for starters. You can read a full review of the album over at Bill Buckley's (a good friend and supporter of the blog) soulandjazzandfunk who has rated it 4/5 (that would be an 8/10 here!)

It was a close call and to be honest I was influenced by the fact that Lindsey Webster is already getting plenty of attention and is this week's top viewed post and hence #1 on the SoulStrutter Top 30.

Another that gets better with each play is Mamas Gun "Looking For Moses". Regular listeners to The Dirty Dozen will know that I tend to focus on the more soulful side of things and not many dance tunes get much of a look in but there are a couple of uptempo numbers included to make up the dozen. I think STR4TA have done a good job on the remix on Anushka's "Bad Weather". Bronx Cheer's update on Patrick Adam's "Ain't No Big Thing" would in other weeks have been in the Covers etc. dozen as would Davante DeVaughn's cover of "Be Thankful".

SoulStrutter Top 30 - 16th Jan 2022 (Week 02)

The SoulStrutter Top 30 of the most viewed posts in the last 30 days (i.e. blog readers choices).

Ten new entries as expected. What wasn't expected though is that Lindsey Webster has shot to #1 and was only released on Friday but was posted in advance on 7 Jan on promo. Another surprising entry is Devante DeVaughn's new cover of "Be Thankful" only five days since posting.

Bobby Washington [2022] - Feanin' (DjSoulBr Vocal Remix) [BDUBB Entertainment]

Miami's Bobby Washington released a new album "Love Frequency" on 1 Jan 2022 from which the track "Feanin'" has been given several DJSoulBR remixes and released as a single on 14 Jan 2022. It's 'better', more uptempo, than the album version and has a bit of a 90s old school, new jack swing feel.

Hugh Alexander [2022] - One Day (Freedom Mix) [Self Released]

Staying with the Martin Luther King Jr, day theme, here's another which features the iconic 'I Have A Dream' speech from Hugh Alexander with "One Day (Freedom Mix)" which was actually released on 11 Sep 2021 but is being re-promoted for MLK Day 2022.

The video below is the original mix.

Miri Ben-Ari, Flo Rida & Erik E Smooth Hicks Feat. Dr. Martin Luther King [2022] - Symphony of Brotherhood Rise (Feat. MLK) [Mirimode Productions]

A single, presumably, released for Martin Luther King Jr. day tomorrow (17 Jan), was released on Friday (14 Jan 2022).

It must be a reissue as I found a video for it from 2012 which features George Duke on piano in the footage and further digging uncovered that it was released on 12" vinyl promo in 2005, although without 'Rise' in the title so perhaps this is a new version.

Miri Ben-Ari is a classically trained Israeli violinist who fell in love with jazz after listening to Charlie Parker.

Karl Kirven [2022] - Trust Me And You'll See [KANT Records] plus Back To Basics (Full Album)

A new single "Trust Me And You'll See" sung in old school style by Karl Kriven released yesterday (15 Jan 2022).

There's not much info available on the artist who states on his facebook that he's an upcoming recording artist from Houston, TX. He released, what looks like, a debut album last Feb (2021) called "Back To Basics", which after having a quick skim through sounds pretty good if you like this style of soul.

In fact, after listening to the self-written track, "My Love", which is a stunning ballad, and skimming through the rest of the album I may as well post it along with the new single! It consists on nine original, self-written, songs and a cover of Heatwave's "Mind Blowing Decisions". A very nice album, I hope you'll agree which it would seem most of us missed last year. Another two tracks were released as singles at the same time as the album but weren't included on the album and, confusingly, the title on the album sleeve is "Just That Kind Of Love" and not "Back To Basics"?

Interestingly, on his twitter, he says he's released two album, the other being "Forever Yours" which I can find no trace of.

P.S. I've had the full album playing in the background whilst researching him and finding links and not felt the urge to skip any track, which is always a sign of a great album!
