Blagov [2024] - That's How I Feel [Self Released]

The tenth single, all this year, from 22 yr old Russian producer Blagov is "That's How I Feel" released today. All seem to be lo-fi, hip-hop, jazz sampled based songs and credited to Roberts Lederers.

We particularly like his last release, "Follow" (7 May), a sultry jazz ballad, so have included it below.

Kendra Mosley [2024] - What a Man [Self Released]

Here's another release that you will immediately recognise the recurring backing track in. This time it's used by Kendra Mosley on her latest single "What A Man".

She's a new artist to us, who we believe is from Houston, TX, and this is her fourth single after one last year ("Soul Tie" (20 Oct) which is well worth checking out) and two in 2021.

SongbirdSylvia [2024] - The Pivot EP [Self Released] (Full EP)

Sylvia Rochelle Dudley graduated from Shreveport University, LA, and is now living in Bossier City, CA.

After just one single, "Love Cry" in Feb under her musical alias SongbirdSylvia, she has released a debut 4 track EP "The Pivot". We'd describe it as neo soul with a southern soul twist (or vice versa).

She appears to have written all the songs with our favourite being "Surprise" and the closing ballad "Pick Me".

Victor Haynes [2024] - Like The Old Days (Remix) [Expansion Records]

The same day as his new album release, Expansion Records has released a remix of Victor Haynes' last single "Like The Old Days".

We can't, hand on heart, say that we can tell any immediate difference as they have the same key and tempo and only the duration seems to differ with the remix being 3:51 v 4:09, but I guess if we were to forensically examine both then there must be some difference?

We'll post post and you can decide.

The Opells [2024] - You Know I Love You b/w Day And Time [Numero Group #NUM4455]

Another rarity reissued digitally this week by Numero Group. A one-off single by The Opells on Linco with "You Know I Love You" and "Day And Time".

The label, run by Walter Grady out of Greensboro, NC, released around a dozen singles between 1969-74. This one was released in 1971.

The group, from Greenboro, recorded this one-off single whilst attending North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Two members survive A Lovett and lead singer Tom Smith (both from New York), James Steadman Jr. and Raleigh Bryant (aka Lil Fats) are now deceased.

Both sides were written by group member James Steadman Jr. The A side is a lowrider sweet soul harmony song (known to the lowrider community for some years) with the flip being more uptempo and funky.

Numero Group has the rights to the label and has released 20 plus from Grady's group of labels which includes Cobra, Witches Brew and others. So, if your looking for any from the labels, have a search as they may well have been reissued digitally.

This one seems virtually impossible to find on original vinyl as only one has ever sold on Discogs (£434) and none are available there for sale, and we can't find it listed at all on Popsike.

Lil $o$o [2024] - Passion [Black 17 Media]

Sofia Donado is a 23-year-old Colombian, originally from Chicago now resident in Miami, who goes by the artist name Lil $o$o. She began singing as a way of healing after her partner was shot while sitting in his car in 2019 leaving their son without a father.

After four singles in 2021-22 ("Better Life", "Go Ooh," "Bad Attitude," and "Woo Tang") she released her debut album "$o$o World".

Her material is generally hip-hop but the new single, "Passion", is a more mellow neo soul affair.
