R.I.P. - Rudolph Isley (1 Apr 1939 - 11 Oct 2023)

One of the founding members, and the second eldest of the six Isley Brothers, Rudolph (Rudy) died on 11 Oct aged 84. Brother Ernie stated that he died in his sleep. That leaves only Ron Isley from the original four brothers who started the group in 1954 as the other two original members, Vernon (1957) and O'Kelly (1986), are both deceased. Younger brother Marvin, who joined the group later, also died in 2010 leaving just Ron and Ernie as surviving members.

You may have read very recently that Rudolph was suing Ron over a dispute involving Ron attempting to trademark The Isley Brothers name. A very sad and unresolved ending. Although the family claims that he had no health issues, it makes you wonder why he would start a legal dispute aged 84 unless he was trying to provide financial support for his family, but that's just pure speculation on our part.
We did a feature on Ronald Isley / Isley Brothers on Ronald Isley's 82nd birthday on 22 May, so we won't repeat what was written there and refer you to it.

Rudolph married Chris Jasper's sister, Elaine, in 1958. After leaving Motown, The Isley's reactivated their T-Neck label, named after Teaneck, NJ, where they set it up before Motown. Younger brothers Ernie and Marvin joined the fold along with Chris Jasper.

In 1969 Rudi recorded a duet with Judy White as Rudi & Judy on T-Neck. The A side "I've Got To Get Myself Together" is a deep soul ballad which the group also recorded for their "The Brothers: Isley" LP in 1969. The flip "Baby You Got It" sounds quite dated even for 1969 as it sounds more like a early/mid 60s recording. It appears to be White's last recording, she recorded on three singles for T-Neck after one on Epic in 1967 followed by four on Buddah 1967-68. Her first two singles were as part of a duo, Bongi & Judy. Bongi being daughter of South African singer Miriam Makeba. It would seem that this is Rudi's only recording outside of The Isley's.

Whilst Ron was the main lead singer, Rudy did record a few lead vocals including shared lead with Ron on their big disco hit "It's A Disco Night (Rock Don't Stop)". Rudi was closest to O'Kelly, and his death in 1986 was perhaps a pivotal point in his decision to leave the group which he did in 1989. He had always wanted to join the ministry and he continued to sing gospel music. In 1996 he recorded a gospel album "Shouting for Jesus: A Loud Joyful Noise".

For the birthday tribute for Ron we focussed solely on the Isley's Motown material. For Rudy's we'll select tracks from their post Motown period from 1969 up to his last album with the group, "Spend The Night" (1989).

Sy Smith [2023] - Slide [The Foreign Exchange Music]

Believe it or not, this latest single, "Slide", from Sy Smith is her first original solo material in five years since "Sometimes A Rose Will Grow In Concete" in 2018. She covered Anthony Newley's (now a standard) "Feeling Good" in 2021, and has featured on others' recordings, but released none of her own material.

The song was co-written with, and produced by, Zo! (Lorenzo Ferguson) and Tall Black Guy (Terrel Wallace) and released on Zo!'s Foreign Exchange Music. It has elements of old (swirling strings) and new school which has the current trend of broken/afro beats behind it (that we don't normally appreciate) but it works well on this song, perhaps as it doesn't interfere with the main melody?

Sy is known as 'The Queen of Underground R&B and Soul" and her music is quite eclectic as she's not afraid of pushing the boundaries. Whilst visiting Washington D.C. in 2018 we were fortunate to catch a one night only show in her home town at the intimate Blues Alley venue. She had just released her last album (above) which she performed songs from along with some jazz standards.

The Washington D.C. born, L.A. resident has been releasing music for almost 25 years, debuting in 1999. She has five albums under her belt which she tends to release every five years or so, so we may receive one in due course if this new single is a sign of things to come.

Robert Gee [2023] - Whatcha Wanna Do [Expansion Records]

As announced last week, Ralph Tee's Expansion Records has two new releases out today (13 Oct). Along with Sheree Brown's single "I’d Rather Be In Love With You (The Sax Way)", a new single from Robert Gee "Whatcha Wanna Do" is released.

Philly native Gee, (now living in London) is a classically trained singer appearing in operas and several musical theatre productions and is a two time Black Music Association Best Male R&B vocal performance award winner (2010 for his 2008 debut album "All My Love" and 2018 for his 2016 eponymous album).

He was an Apollo Amateur Night winner with his talent being discovered as a teen by none other than Patti LaBelle. He served his apprenticeship working with soul legends including the one and only Luther Vandross, Teena Marie, Vesta Williams, Tevin Campbell, Kashif and The Emotions. He toured extensively with Loose Ends feat. Jane Eugene over the years, stepping into the lead  male  role  opposite her.

You may have already heard him, perhaps without realising it, as he featured on Luman Child's Tru Thoughts debut EP "Love Is The Message" in Jul '22 (co-writing and taking lead on "Grateful") and also on the debut album "Time To Grow" on Cool Million's Sedsoul label in 2017.

Robert has teamed up with producer/song writer Philippe 'Pump It Up' Scemema on a smooth groove with a 70s Soul/ R&B feel reminiscent of a classic Marvin Gaye or Donnie Hathaway yet with contemporary feel.

Sheree Brown [2023] - I’d Rather Be In Love With You (The Sax Way) [Expansion Records]

Sheree Brown releases a new single "I’d Rather Be In Love With You (The Sax Way)" today (13 Oct) on Expansion Records ahead of her UK appearance with Leroy Hutson at The Barbican, London, on 29 Nov. (Click flyer below for details and tickets).

In the late 70's Sheree worked on demos of two songs ("You'll Be Dancing All Night" and "I'd Rather Be In Love With You") that she felt would be a good representation of her music. She collaborated on the arrangements and music with Patrice Rushen, Ricky Lawson, Jim Gilstrap, Syreeta Wright, Abraham Laboriel, Brad Williams, Gerald Albright, Paulinho Da Costa, Curtis Robertson, Jr., Paul Jackson, Jr. and Alexander Thomas (EWF) who was music director and helped produce the demo. She presented the demos to Capitol Records in 1980 which resulted in Sheree signing a deal with the label.

However, when it came time to record her first album, “Straight Ahead” (1981), the producer, Richard Rudolph (husband of Minnie Riperton), did a magnificent job of capturing the arrangement and essence of her demo for "You'll Be Dancing All Night", but "I'd Rather Be In Love With You" had a certain raw sensitivity and sweetness and Sheree yearned to produce and re-record it herself and decided to hold off putting it on the album until an opportunity presented itself sometime in the future.

That opportunity arose in the late 90's and she recorded a new version of the song for an event to raise funds for her daughter and two of her friends traveling to NY for the summer to attend Alvin Ailey and the Dance Theater of Harlem's summer youth dance programs. It was retitled "I'd Rather Be In Love With You (The Sax Way)" and featured saxophonist Dean James and background vocals by Juliana Jai Bolden and was produced by Sheree and musician/songwriter/singer Lisa Huang.

She performed it live for the fundraiser, accompanied by a tap dancer Miles Jeffries from the Broadway musical Stomp who danced to the rhythmic pulse of the song. In the new recording she used the rim shot from the drums on the original version throughout the song, along with her guitar, bass, and keyboards, and of course the backgrounds. The song was included to a limited licensed CD for "Straight Ahead" in 2010 as a bonus track and is now being made available as a single.

We did a feature and Discography on Sheree Brown in Feb '21 (pre-Spotify days) so if you wish to explore her music further then we direct you there. Her 1982 album track "Got To Get Away" from "The Music" is one of our desert island discs.

Gerald Richardson [2023] - G. Rich Experience [Self Released]

Two previously released songs are paired as "G. Rich Experience" by Gerald Richardson for release on 11 Oct: "Life Of The Party" was a single in May whilst "Naturally" (a lovely smooth and mellow stepper) was released as a single in Jun 2019.

Richardson is from Memphis, TN and these two seem to be his only recordings to date.

Papik feat. Nicole Magolie [2023] - Montecarlo Diamonds [Alman Music] (Full Album)

Back in May, Papik and Nicole Magolie released "Montecarlo" which we tipped heavily. Little did we know that it would end up as a full album.

The album is titled "Montecarlo Diamonds" and all tracks feature Nicole Magolie on vocals. It's full of good tracks but the ones, apart from the previous single, that particularly jump out are "Crazy for You", "My Love Is True" and the Latin favoured "Why Don't You Know". If you're regular visitor, you'lll know that we like a good deep ballad or two so "Cupid's Bow" ticks that box. However, as said, all tracks are good and it's one of those rare albums that you can play all through without the temptation to skip tracks.

Papik is a Nu-Jazz project which is the brainchild of Italian producer Nerio Poggi who is pretty prolific having produced sixteen singes and now a third album in 2023.

Nicole Magolie is a South African entertainer (singer/dancer) who is currently a singer at Hotel De Paris in Montecarlo and Saint Tropez so perhaps that's how the title of the new single came about? She released an album of jazz standards "Don't Ever Go" in April 2022 and the May release appears to be only her second single.

Miparismusic feat. Carol Riddick [2023] - I Love Me Too [Miparismusic]

What a beauty this is! Timeless, classic, soul music of the very highest quality.

Miparismusic is a company presided over by Michael Upton who's a singer/producer from Philly. The eagle eyed may have spotted that he featured on a cover of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes feat. Sharon Paige "Hope That We Can Be Together Soon" with Jean Carn on her "Flashback" album in 2013.

He recruits the talents of another Philly native, Carol Riddick, to perform her vocal finesse on a single "I Love Me Too" released on 10 Oct.

We anticipate this getting loads of airplay from the Soul Associates over the coming weeks.  Incidentally, there will be no Soul Associates Top 30 this or next week as several members are attending/appearing at Bolsoul in Croatia this week so have done no new radio shows to be included.
