Amazon UK Sound Samples REMOVED

From around 3pm this afternoon Amazon UK unilaterally decided, without any pre-warning whatsoever to my knowledge,  to remove sound samples from their digital music buying platform. I thought it may be a temporary glitch, so called their customer services only to be told that sound samples are no longer available. I told them in no uncertain terms that I thought it was a rather short-sighted decision as why would someone buy new music, albums especially, without being able to sample it first. Customers will just go elsewhere. Let's see how long it takes them to discover this before they reinstate the samples!

If you are an artist/label/promoter or in any way involved with digital music sales on Amazon and disagree with this new 'policy', then I strongly urge you to complain to Amazon in the strongest possible terms as this may severely impact potential sales.

UPDATE 17 Sep 2021. It was pointed out by a reader who left a comment this morning, that I have also experienced, that in addition to removing sound samples, album/EP tracks have been split into individual listings so that it is now not possible to buy a complete album/EP in one transaction, you have to search for all tracks and select/buy them individually. How Amazon feel that this is improving the 'customer experience' beggars belief. I can only suggest that we all log a complaint with Amazon until they 'see sense'. This 'policy' will finally put the death knell into albums!

Apparently, I've heard from several sources, that Amazon has done this before and then reversed it, but as the reader's comments suggest, Amazon is 'probably' just trying to 'encourage' us to subscribe to their streaming service. I wonder how many more years before we will not be able to buy music at all on Amazon (or anywhere else for that matter except direct from artist/labels) and will be 'forced' to stream it. Now what will be an interesting proposition enforced upon us! Amazon's bean counters have presumably worked out that it is more financially beneficial for THEM to rent music than to sell it. So in future if you want to listen to music you better make sure you have a good wi-fi reception wherever you are! .

'Tail wagging the dog' springs to mind. The only way to 'respond' to them is to stop buying music from Amazon and DON'T subscribe to Amazon Music Unlimited! Until now I have generally provided links on images to Amazon so you can go there to buy, until this decision is reversed I will now stop doing this. The artists/labels suffer, the consumer suffers and ONLY Amazon think that they may benefit from this decision if you subscribe to them so don't let them win and vote with your feet and buy elsewhere and don't subscribe!

Yet another UPDATE 17 Sep 2021
It would appear that Amazon UK has reinstated the grouping of album/EP tracks! .. so small mercies ... but I wonder if the samples will be reinstated .. watch this space!

Gavendri [2021] - Should I [Self Released]

A track from 25 Aug 2021 which I picked up from Leigh Taylor who had this up his sleeve for last night's Gourmet Soulful Music show.

"Should I" is the fifth single from Indonesian singer/songwriter Gavendri after debuting almost exactly a year before this release on 23 Sep 2020 with "Sepi". It's easily her best to date.

Jay King [2021] - All Your Love (All Night Long) [Self Released] NEW MIX

For the third time of posting, one I posted before release (short version) and again at release (long version) (13 Aug), but here is a brand new, so far unreleased, version. Refer to one or other above from more information.

It includes vocals from legendary singers Lenny Williams, Glenn Jones and Li Barry  which is incredible.

I'll include all three versions in this post. The latest mix is the last below.

Special Delivery [2021] - This Kind Of Love [Shotgun #SHO 114]

A real mixed bag of tunes today! Getting a reissue on 7" vinyl due on 1 Oct 2021 (on Paul Mooney & Paul Conroy's Shotgun label) is this 70s Philly style dancer from Special Delivery "This Kind Of Love" first released in 1978 on Shield. The re-issue contains the longer, album version rather than the original 45 version along with the original flip "I've Got To Be Free".

Phil Fearon & Galaxy (featuring Dee Galdes) covered "This Kind Of Love" in 1985 and had a minor UK hit reaching #70.

Special Delivery evolved from Act 1 (from Washington D.C.) who many will know for their 'novelty' pop hit "Tom The Peeper" (which reached #40 on UK pop chart in 1974) but the other side, "Goodbye Love (We're Through)", was picked up on by the UK rare soul scene as was "It Takes Both Of Us", both also appeared on their self-titled (and only) album on Spring.

Special Delivery released three albums, all on different labels, and around seven singles between 1975-82. Their first album in 1976 ("The Lonely One") was billed as Terry Huff & Special Delivery even though, by the time of the album release, Huff had left the group. The album has seen multiple re-issues mainly for the two killer ballads "The Lonely One" and "You Destroyed Me With Your Love".

The group members for "This Kind Of Love" were George Parker, Chester Fortune, Reginald Ross and Veronica Martin who was previously a member of a group called Destiny, later called The Family and then Osiris but she was no longer a member after Destiny.

Terrell Edwards [2021] - 100% / Angel [Self Released]

Terrell Edwards is originally from Milwaukee but moved to Edmonton (Canada) in 2012. Soon afterwards he was spotted by Jay Leno who invited him on his show and he spent the next few years opening the show as Terrell Edwards & The Tri-City Rat Pack.

He has released three albums, the first as Terrelle Edwards & Reach "More than Conquerors" (2006), "The Living Room" (2012)  and "Unchained" (2018). All 'probably' self-released as none appear on any of the DSP's.

His latest single "100%" is due imminently (no date given) which follows a deep soul ballad "Angel" released on 25 Jun 2021 which I've also included below. It has Mark Merry written all over it so I checked, and right enough he already programmed it in on release in June.

The latest single is an up-tempo modern soul stepper set at 100 bpm.

Zenizen Feat. Nappy Nina [2021] - I Would (...but you want me down) [Topshelf Records]

Zenizen is a group created by, Brooklyn, NYC based, Opal Hoyt who was born in Alaska. They debuted in 2017 with an EP titled "Australia" because that's where it was recorded.

The latest single, "I Would (...but you want me down)" (released 8 Sep 2021), I would say sits in the 'edgy' / 'future soul' space. It contains a short section of rap from Oakland rapper Nappy Nina at 2:50 for the allotted 30 seconds!

Randy Muller Boom Chang Bang [2021] - Welcome To My Life (Single Mix) [Wavehill Records]

Following the last post of a slightly earlier single release from Randy Muller Boom Chang Bang, here's the latest single, which I guess is technically a reissue, as it's a 'single mix' of the title track of the 2019 album "Welcome To My Life", not that you'd really notice the difference of all of 20 seconds being cut from the album version (3:54 v 4:14), but I guess it makes it more radio friendly!

Whilst still retaining the jazz influence and flute, it's a slightly harder, more funky, tune in the jazz/funk groove (which hints back to Brass Construction/Skyy days) which, again, is predominantly an instrumental with only mainly chants of the title.

I think old 80s soul boys will love this as it has that UK soul weekender 'anthemic' vibe about it! I can see the fancy dress, jelly shoes and hear the whistles now! It's a real grower!

Randy Muller Boom Chang Bang [2021] - Sunnyside Up [Wavehill Records]

Ex B.T. Express, Brass Construction and Skyy man Randy Muller with another musical alias (as well as Funk Deluxe and Brooklyn Groove Machine) Boom Chang Bang released this "Sunnyside Up" on 13 Aug 2021, I don't know how it slipped through the net at the time?

It's is a nice little, summery (remember those few days?), flute laden instrumental jazz stepper which is getting noticed. They have subsequently released a follow up on 31 Aug 2021 (which I'll post separately). It is the 'single mix' of the title track of their 2019 album "Welcome To My Life". They also have a new new self-titled album due shortly
