Brooklyn Funk Essentials Feat. Alison Limerick [2022] - Scream! [Dorado Records]

The Brooklyn Funk Essentials is a music collective formed in 1993 by Arthur Baker who mix jazz, funk, and hip hop featuring musicians from different cultures. 

They featured here last year with Alison Limerick on a 2018 update of her 1990 debut which went on to become a club anthem, "Where Love Lives".

Alison Limerick features with them again for a new single "Scream!"  released yesterday (13 Jul 2022) which has a jazz-funk / acid jazz feel.

A self-written, self-released debut single "Coffee" by Nava Goodman was released today. It features a rap section by an unnamed rapper.

Now living in L.A., Nava Goodman hails from Worcester, MA, and her first single coincides with her birthday. She is a filmmaker, writer, actor, director (known for The Chronicles of Eve & Big P: June (2017), Last Chance (2015) and Farm to Table (2016).) as well as a singer/songwriter.

Samanda Lora is from The Bronx, NYC, now living in Atlanta, GA. She released her second album "Smoke and Music, Vol. 2" on 2 Jul 2020 which follows a five track EP "Smoke and Music, Vol. 1" released in Mar 2022.

The eight track album is predominantly R&B but one track did standout "Holy" which features a rap by Southside Louie.

The Defaulters Feat. Charles Hancock [2022] - Gentle Man / Disco Dennis [Numero Group #NUM5699]

Another Numero Group vintage reissue. It comes from The Defaulters who released just the one single on P.J.D.S. in 1979.

It looks like a private press as this is the only release on the label and it was pressed by Boddie Recording Co. in Cleveland, OH. The original A side, credited to Clark Darke And The Defaulters, is a run of the mill disco tune "Disco Dennis" dedicated to the mayor of Cleveland Dennis Kucinich.

The B side is "Gentle Man", credited as The Defaulters feat. Charles Hancock, a sweet soul tune presumably in-demand on the lowrider scene as the prices are souring. I looked at prices and until a year ago they consistently sold for between £50-£170 and suddenly one has sold on Discogs for £756 and the one before that for £426. On Popsike only one has sold for more that £100 so I don't know why someone has paid £756 for it unless it has suddenly become in-demand.

Shanice Lanae is from Las Vegas and auditioned for X-Factor in 2009. She released her debut six track EP "EYES ON ME" on 30 Jun 2022.  It's mainly R&B but two tracks may appeal to soulies, the single "Juicy" (25 Jan 2021) and the title track "Eyes On Me".

Brent Faiyaz [2022] - WASTELAND [Lost Kids] (Full Album)

Brent Faiyaz's (aka Christopher Brent Wood) profile claims he is "International style icon & enigmatic R&B sensation". I don't quite know about that, perhaps in certain circles but he is no household name, but he released his third album "WASTELAND" last Friday (8 Jul 2022). Most of it is R&B/hip-hop but one track did standout titled "Waste Your Time" which was released as a single last year (1 Jul 2021).

There are one or two others that may appeal to soulies on the nineteen track album such as "Role Model" and "Jackie Brown".

I was just going to cherry pick the selected tracks but thought that others might find something else of interest so have posted the full album.

There is already a remixed version of the album "WASTELAND Chopped & Skewed" available on Bandcamp by DJ Hightz from Dallas, TX. I would have to question the legality of it so quickly after the release of the album. I'd also have to ask why, as all that appears to have been done is slowing tracks down which seems a bit pointless and opportunistic. It seems a bit ridiculous when "Skit: Oblivion" is slowed down so much the the female voice sounds male! I'm sure if I was the artist I'd have something to say if this wasn't sanctioned. Another clue is that DJ Hightz states that his old page got deleted, presumably(?) by Bandcamp due to complaints of legality of what he is doing. It's a very odd world we live in where people seem to think they can take and use what they like and make money off the back of other's work without permission! If the artist wanted his work presented this way then surely he would have done it himself.  Sermon over!
