Poetic Healing [2022] - I Just Wanna.. [Self Released]

A second single from Poetic Healing, who I assume to be  who wrote both singles. The first was "Deeper" (8 Jul 2019)  and the latest "I Just Wanna.." (10 Jul 2022).

It's another that makes use of the recurring sample that has been doing the rounds for the last 18 months at least.

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 27 (Jul 2022 Wk 27) Spotify Playlist

SoulStrutter selections of the best releases this week
(Jul 2022 Wk 27)
In no particular order other than tempo.

Another quiet big week for new releases so both 'dozens' have been extended with a few extra tracks in each.

Not many albums of any real significance again and I had an inkling when I first set ears on Jamison Ross on day of release (Tue) that he'd be a contender for SoulStrutter Selection of the Week and in the end I think it was a choice between him and Nicholas Cole but Jamison just swung it.

Tammy Harris was released on Bandcamp on 1 Jul but was available from Friday on the main DSP's hence she makes an appearance in this week's selections.

The Neo Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 17 Jul 2022 Wk 27 Spotify Playlist

The SoulStrutter selection of the best Neo Soul releases
for: Jul 2022 Wk 27 in no particular order.

A few bonus tracks again this week with the dozen extended to fifteen. I think it's quite a strong set this week. My pick of the bunch would be Camilla Covington & Lilly Aviana but then it would be, as it uses the same sample used in one of last years end of year selections W3sst "Midnight". You need to get into it for about 90 seconds as I think Lilly Aviana's part is what lifts it.

Playlist:
Camilla Covington & Lilly Aviana - backspacebackspace [7 Jul]
King Sis - Big Moody (Samai Tawi) [9 Jul (single 17 Jun)]
Neela - Tease [27 Jun]
ZAMII - Soul Conversation [5 Jul]

Alice Clark [1972] - Alice Clark [Mainstream #MRL 362] (Full Album ) + PLUS

An album that has been highly sought after by UK rare soul collectors comes from Alice Clark who earlier had a big Northern Soul tune released on Warner Bothers in 1968 "You Hit Me (Right Where It Hurt Me)" but don't ignore the flip which is a classy deep soul tune "Heaven's Will (Must Be Obeyed)" which has featured on these pages in the past.

An original copy of Alice Clark's only, self-titled, vinyl album on Mainstream will set you back at least £300-£400 or more but for us mere mortals it has been reissued on CD and vinyl several times and is available digitally.

It was initially sought after for the modern soul spin "Don't You Care" (written by Bobby Hebb no less who contributed another two songs to the album) and "Never Did I Stop Loving You" written by jazz singer/songwriter Juanita Fleming who was a backing vocalist for Martha Wash (Two Tons 'O Fun / The Weather Girls).

Samoan-Australian vocalist Kylie Auldist did a respectable cover of "Never Did I Stop Loving You" on her 2008 debut album "Just Say"

Not much is known about Alice Clark who released only three singles, the Warner Bros. release preceded by "You Got A Deal" / "Say You'll Never (Never Leave Me)" (which sounds quite similar to "Heaven's Will") on Rainy Day, also 1968, both written and produced by Billy Vera, and a final single of two tracks off the Mainsteam album in 1972 ("I Keep It Hid" / "Don't Wonder Why"). She went into obscurity after recording this album which was a commercial failure and died of cancer in 2004 aged 57 possibly not knowing of the underground following for her album.

Wilson Pickett [1979] - I Want You [EMI America #8027]

As if you didn't need proof that you don't have to spend a fortune on great tunes, this cheapie from Wilson Pickett, "I Want You", from 1979 on EMI America can be picked up in near mint condition for no more than £20!

Another one inspired by a live broadcast by SoulStrutter 'soulmate' Roger Williams from his live show today.

It came out on a 2004 compilation "Steppin' Across The U.S.A., Volume 8" in 2004 on CD and is available digitally but this track in particular was obviously ripped from vinyl, crackles and all, suggesting perhaps that the compilation may not be 100% legal, which is possibly why none of the artists are listed on the CD? It's well worth checking out as includes Keith Barrow "You Know You Want To Be Loved" and the very underrated group Star-Tells (aka The Chymes) "What More Can I Ask For" amongst the dozen tracks.

Hopefully a podcast of the show will be available later or tomorrow which will be posted so if you missed the show you can catch up on some absolutely stunning tunes. In fact even if you did listen you can hear them all again.

The Natural Four [1971] - Hanging On To A Lie [Boola-Boola #W.H.-1001]

In this week's earlier 'tongue-in-cheek' posts, re. the resignation of government ministers and the pending resignation of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, I missed a trick omitting to post this one! It's old news now but hey ho, it's a great tune so well worth posting anyway!

It's a modern/northern soul classic from The Natural Four with "Hanging On To A Lie" which is quite hard to get hold of and would probably set you back around £400-£500 if and when you could find one.

Boola-Boola was a short-lived label based in Oakland, CA, (1967-73) owned by Willie Hoskins (W.H. in cat.no.) who produced and arranged the song. The Natural Four cut their first single "I Thought You Were Mine" on the label in 1967, the first release on the label, which is also considered a Northern Soul classic.

Willie Hutch v Charles Drain [1974/1976] - I'm Gonna Stay [Tamla Motown (IT) #SM NP 64211 / RCA #PB-10594]

A couple of versions of Willie Hutch penned "I'm Gonna Stay". Hutch recorded it on his "Mark Of The Beast" album in 1974 and it only got a 7" single issue in Italy.

Charles Drain covered it on his only album, "Dependable", in 1976 and it saw a 7" release on RCA.

This post was inspired by hearing Roger Williams spin Willie Hutch's version on a live radio show this afternoon.

A five part feature on the music of Willie Hutch was posted last year but we never need another excuse to post his music.

J-Wonn [2022] - Thrill Is Gone [Self Released] (Full EP)

Contemporary southern soul from J-Wonn (Jawonn Fitzgerld Smith from Jackson, MS) in the form of a new six track EP "Thrill Is Gone" released on 1 Jul 2022.

I don't recall listening to any of his previous material but I think his voice sounds similar to the, 'disgraced', R. Kelly on some tracks, particularly on "It's You Baby".

The title track was released In Jan 2002 as a single and a video for it is included below but my choice tracks are "It''s You Baby" and "1000 Lies".

D. Brown [2022] - Grown Folks Muzik [Future Star Entertainers] (Full Album)

A new album by D. Brown "Grown Folks Muzik" was released on 26 Jun 2022 and has been hanging around the Amazon UK Hot New Releases for the last week. I've not really been drawn to it for some reason but thought I should give it a spin.

This album, which he describes as Soul/Blues/R&B, should appeal to the more traditional amongst us. It's contemporary but with old school appeal. I personally prefer the ballads such as "We're Just Getting Started" and "I Can Show You" along with "Special Treat", but there are also some down right funky tunes mixed in along with a couple of bluesy numbers ("Do Your Thing").

D. Brown is  Daood Brown from Fort Worth, TX, and this is his fifth album and his first since "Show Up & Show Out" in 2020. He released the opening track "1 Mo Drink" as a single at the end of May to promote the album.

His first album, imaginatively titled "The D. Brown Album", was released in 2014.

Jessica Malone [2022] - Sweet Sunlight [Self Released]

A new single from Jessica Malone "Sweet Sunrise" which is more folksy and 'soulful', with a bit of a throwback feel, rather than soul but offer it up for consideration anyway.
