Wendell G [2022] - Baby, Baby, Baby [Supreme Music 2000] (Full Album)


A new album from Wendell G (James Wendell Glover Sr) "Baby, Baby, Baby" released today. It's a southern soul affair from a n artist i can find little about. He's from Lafayette, Louisiana, and only has one other single listed which was released twice on the same day with a remix.

For some odd reason two of the tracks have been disabled on Sportify so if you want to hear them here's the  YouTube Playlist which includes all tracks.

SoulStrutter selections of the best releases this week

In no particular order other than tempo. 

Scraping around a bit this week to collate a dozen of the more traditional style new releases. Lindsey Webster has been getting plays for a few weeks on promo and was finally released on Friday. A new single from Hil St. Soul on Friday has been topping the Amazon UK New Releases for the last few days.

Mica Millar has a couple of launch events for her debut album in Sep and has released, what I always felt was, the best track as her latest single with a supporting video.

Up and coming south London artist James Vickery releases has first single for a year and what a beauty it is for lovers of authentic soul music even the blue-eyed bashers can't complain at this one surely? 

Couple of tracks from Paige Alyssa & The Max which came with instrumental and acapella versions.

This week's SoulStrutter Selection of the Week isn't featured in the playlist as it is not available digitally, it is CD only with a signed, coloured, vinyl LP to follow when received from pressing plant. It, of course, is the new album "The Sovereign of 14742" by Raja-Nee'. Roger Williams [2022-08-27] - The Soulsorts Podcast [Podcast #15] - 2000's Indie Soul Archive 50 #1


It's been a week or two but Roger Williams is back on the podcast trail with his Record Room Sessions '22 and a new series of podcasts which he has labelled "2000's Indie Soul Archive 50 #1". 

This one will be the first of a series of 50-track selections from the indie soul archives from around the time when Roger started his radio shows on Starpoint Radio in 2005 and then transitioning to Solar Radio in 2006.

Roger states "I'm not sure how well known a lot of this stuff is overall so hopefully there’ll be some new to you tunes or some memories and tracks you may have forgotten about, I do know one thing though, this music stands up 100% in quality to this day, featuring a few well known names alongside many artists who in my opinion really didn’t get the rewards they deserved for producing such class music".

A quick scan through the playlist and there are plenty that certainly look new, or have been forgotten, to these ears.

Thomas Cain [2022] - Hold Up / Try My Love [Soul Direction #SD-011]


Thomas Cain is a singer, keyboardist, composer from Alabama who performed in the flourishing music scene of Nashville, TN, in the 1970s. He and fellow Alabama singer/songwriter Arthur Alexander formed a 20-year songwriting and publishing relationship which started in 1970.

He released just one single "Draggin' It Out" / "Crawlin'" on RCA in 1975, however some of the songs he wrote / co-wrote have been recorded by Booker T Jones, Lorraine Johnson, Walter Jackson, 5th Dimension, Syndney Joe Qualls, Little Anthony, Ronnie Milsap, B.J. Thomas, Kenny Rogers, Kinsman Dazz (Dazz Band) to name a few.

Soul Direction has got a hold of two tracks, "Hold Up" and "Try My Love", recorded in 1976 in Muscle Shoals (Wishbone Recording Studio) which Cain registered but did nothing with which will be paired on their next release

Emanuel Harrold [2022] - Funk La Soul [Gearbox Records] (Full EP)


Emanuel Harrold (aka E-FM Emanuel Harrold Forward Motion) is a multiple Grammy nominated and winning drummer currently touring with Gregory Porter who has appeared on some of his well know recordings such as "Water", "Be Good", "Liquid Spirit", "All Rise" and "Still Rising".

He has a new four track EP "Funk La Soul" subtitled Vol. #1 suggesting that there is more to come. The opening track "Brighter Days" features Grammy winning saxophonist Tivon Pennicott (also a Gregory Porter band member) with Carlos Scooter Brown (sax) & Jahmal Nichols (bass) featuring on "Best Part". 

For the Allen Toussaint penned song "Yes We Can" (a hit for The Pointer Sisters in 1973) he drafts Brian Owens on vocals (another Grammy nominee). The EP closes with an instrumental version of Denice Williams' 1977 #1 UK pop hit "Free" with saxophonist Carlos Scooter Brown.

Harold is from three generations of musicians from St. Louis, MO, and has collaborated with many big name artists such as Stevie Wonder, Gregory Porter, Jonathan  Baptiste, Robert Glasper, De La Soul and many more.

Gio Varchi is a singer-songwriter born in NYC of Taiwanese-Italian descent and is now based in Tokyo. She debuted in Jan 2021 with "Butterflies" and followed it with "2AM" in Mar 2021 (live video version below). Her third single "Mistakes" was released on 10 Aug 2022.

Divine Brown Feat. Fingazz [2022] - Digital Love [Self Released]


Divine Brown (Michelle Nicole Brown previously known as Divine Earth Essence) is a from Toronto and released her self-titled debut album in 2005 followed by "Love Chronicles" in 2008.

She seemed to take a hiatus between 2009-18 and has returned with with six singles since 2018. Her latest single "Digital Love"(released on Friday 26 Aug 2020) features L.A. producer and talkbox expert Fingazz (aka John Stary) and has a bit of n 80s feel.

Honie Gold [2022] - Misty Blue [Active Management Group]


Honie Gold is from Dallas,TX, and released her first single in March 2019 and is still only 21. In that short time she's released around a dozen singles/EPs and two full albums. 

Her latest single "Misty Blue" was released on 26 Aug and is one of those contemporary yet retro sounds with a definite nod to the 60s but with a new twist.
