L. Young [2023] - Come Get To This [4ever Young Entertainment]

Perhaps motivated by the 50th anniversary of "Let's Get It On", from where "Come Get To This" originated, is an admirable new cover by L. Young released on 26 Sep. Faithful to the original and even looking a little like Marvin of the cover image with the beard and headgear.

Surprisingly, there aren't too many covers of the song that we know of. The first by Nancy Wilson on her 1975 album of the same name, Bobbi Humphrey semi-inst. jazz version ("City Beat" 1988) and more recent versions by L.J. Reynolds ("Get To This" 2011), Joe ("Signature" 2012) and K-Jon ("Man" 2013). There are one or two others which are not particularly worthy versions.

His last single was also a cover of Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud" in Nov '22 and prior to that an original song "I Ain't Gonna Waste Your Time" (Mar '22). You may recall a single he released on vinyl on Soultownie in 2019, an excellent modern soul double-sider which included "Can't Get You Off My Mind" / "Ms-Supa Thick".

L. Young (Lawrence Terron Young) was born in Louisville, KY, and is a singer, songwriter, producer, engineer, keyboardist based in L.A. who, to date,,has released five albums "They Just Don't Know" (2004), "The 12th Letter" (2008), "ReVerb" (2013) and "4Ever Young" (2015) and "Wrinkles in Time" (2018)

The title track from the album "ReVerb" ("Love Is A Verb") gave L. Young his first radio hit and top #20 Billboard Urban A/C chart hit. "Wrinkles in Time" saw 3 singles go to #1 on the UK Soul Charts.

He has appeared on stage with such artists as Stevie Wonder, Seal, David Foster, BabyFace, Eric Benet, Aaron Neville, Lalah Hathaway, Toni Tony Tone', Mint Condition, En Vogue, Patti LaBelle, Toni Braxton, Gladys Knight, Keith Sweat, and Teena Marie just to name a few.

Gloria Weems [2023] - Lovelight [Freestyle Records] (Full Album Reissue)

A digital and vinyl reissue of a quite rare 1983 boogie funk album "Lovelight" by South African singer Gloria Weems.

It appears to be her only album from which two singles, "Wanna Dance With You" and "Push It Up", were released, all in 1983. The album was only released in South Africa but the first single got a 12" release on Prelude in the US.

To be honest it's not really our thing as it has that 'tinny' early/mid 80s production that just doesn't stand the test of time (to our ears at least) but the French, in particular, seem to rave on this sort of material. We have a truck load of this sort of stuff on promo 12" from back in the day that doesn't get anywhere near a stylus then or now, so probably needs a better home that appreciates it.

Sir Soundbender [2023] - Trust UR Heart (Remixes) [Self Released]

We've not come across Sir Soundbender previously but these remixes are by Mortimer Snerd III so we wonder if it's yet another alias for Steve 'Miggedy' Maestro (aka Stephen Maskall)

It's a reworking of Bobby Womack's "Trust Your Heart" from "Pieces" (1978) which he co-wrote with Leon Ware and Don Davis and featured David Ruffin on backing vocals and the female backing voice you hear is Brandye. If you're a regular visitor you may recall that we posted his, Japanese only, 12:47 (on CD) recording of the song on June Yamagishi's 1988 "My Pleasure" album which was re-titled "Give My Love A Try".

There is a vocal and a drum mix, we've only posted the vocal ("Trust UR Heart MS III Full Dizko Slap") as the drum mix is rather monotonous and probably only useful for DJ remixes.

TMF The Music Forever [2023] - Making Love to the Music [Self Released]

If the sound of TMF The Music Forever sounds familiar it's because they are a seven piece group made up of former members of Maze. The line up is Chris Walker (lead vocals), Roame Lowry (conga/vocals), John 'Jubu' Smith (guitar/vocals), Vance Taylor (keys),  Bear Williams (bass/vocals), Calvin Napper (drums),  and Daniel Weatherspoon (keys & organ).

They are mainly a live act but have released a debut single "Making Love to the Music" written by Chris Walker and if this is the sort of stuff we are to expect from them then bring it on. Magical, timeless, smooth soul music of the finest quality.

Below is a 45 minute interview with  all band members.

We posted the title track, "For All Time" by Mayer Hawthorne from his forthcoming album (due 27 Oct) on 3 Sep. It was the second single pre-released and today comes the third "Without You". Not as instant as the last single but more blue-eyed retro soul.

Relyae [2023] - Moonlight [PLYGRND]

Brooklyn's (NYC) Relyae (Shearaton Relyea Carter) has featured here several times, generally with, or as, a featured artist. For his latest single "Moonlight", which is difficult to pigeon-hole as it's contemporary but with an 80s feel, he's solo.
