Rodney Stith [2022] - The Soul Chronicles of Rodney Stith [Shockoe Records] (Full EP)

You'd be forgiven for thinking that this EP "The Soul Chronicles of Rodney Stith" was a 60s recording, from not only it's sound but also the artwork, but it's brand new from Rodney Stith who hails from Petersburg, VA.

It seems he has released just two previous singles "The Blueprint" in 2018 and "Who Am I" in 2021 (video included below). However, whilst looking for a Soundcloud channel for him I came across a four track EP  "The Soul Survivor" (probably unreleased) from 2011.

He also featured on a single "All I Want Is Your Love" with Danish producer Alex Puddu in Sep 2021 which passed us by.

The clear standouts to my ears are "Heaven's Door" and "I Can't Help Myself", but it's a very good EP.

Chavonna Adams [2022] - Spellbound [Self Released]

Chavonna Adams is a singer/songwriter from Kansas City, MO who appears to have debuted in 2018 and released another single in 2019 and has now released her sixth in 2022, "Spellbound" on 6 Dec. The best of the others released this year is "Baby Be Mine".

It has an old school feel, which sounds like it may well sample something that I don't recognise, as the backing sounds familiar, anybody?

Whitney Houston [2022] - Far Enough (I Wanna Dance With Somebody (The Movie Whitney New, Classic and Reimagined) OST) [RCA]

On Friday (23 Dec '22) a new biopic movie of the life of Whitney Houston will be premiered with the soundtrack for the movie "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (The Movie Whitney New, Classic and Reimagined)" being released last Friday (16 Dec '22). At first I passed on it assuming it to be simply a rehash of her 80s/90s hits but on closer inspection there are a handful of previously unreleased songs along with new versions of others.

I've no idea how long the movie is but the soundtrack contains 35 tracks lasting 2 hours and 25 minutes!

The clear standout is a ballad from the vaults, "Far Enough", written by Michael Masser Leon Ware and Gerry Goffin. In addition "Moment of Truth" is culled from the 1986 "Whitney" album sessions along with a couple of covers from The Winans family including "Tomorrow" featuring Samaria, and three versions of "Don't Cry for Me" which was originally sung by BeBe & CeCe Winans at the Commitment to Life AIDS benefit concert in L.A. in 1994. There is an a cappella, a full-length film version by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, and a reimagined recording by record producer Sam Feldt.

Most tracks won't be of much interest to die hard soul listeners, as let's be honest it's pop music, so I've only included "Far Enough" rather than the full 35 track album.

First Choice [2022] - The Philadelphia Re-Edit Sessions [Simpson Uniquity] (Full Album)

Paul Simpson is back with a new set of Philadelphia Re-Edit SessionsThis time around Mr. Simpson's subject is Philly Trio First Choice who were originally a high school quartet consisting of Rochelle Fleming, Annette Guest, Wardell Piper and Malanie McSears.

Their first single "This Is The House (Where Love Died)", released on Scepter in 1972, failed to chart but got exposure on the UK Northern Soul scene and is included in this set. McSears left the group at this point leaving them as a trio. They followed it up with what was to become their biggest US hit "Armed And Extremely Dangerous" (#11 R&B / #28 Hot 100 / #16 UK). However, they surpassed that in the UK with their next single "Smarty Pants" which was a UK Top 10 pop hit (#9).

Wardell Piper left for a solo career before the release of their debut album "Armed And Extremely Dangerous" in 1973 being replaced by Joyce Jones. Whilst Piper is not pictured on the sleeve, she did sing on the album which was mixed by Tom Moulton although uncredited. Piper's first, and biggest, single was "Captain Boogie" which didn't materialise for another five years in 1978.

More First Choice hits followed with "Newsy Neighbors", "The Player", "Guilty" and "Doctor Love" being probably their best known. A couple of omissions in this set includes "Doctor Love" and  "Let No Man Put Asunder" which debuted on their 1977 album "Delusions" but wasn't released as a single until 1983 and was only released on 12" in the US by Salsoul, but did get a 7" issue in The Netherlands.  Mary J. Blige covered the song in 1999.

The group released six albums between 1973 and when they disbanded in 1980. The first two on Philly Groove (which ran from 1967-74 and was owned by Stan 'The Man' Watson (a member of  50s doo-wop group The Del-Vikings who later managed the Orphonics who became The Delfonics) and Sam Bel with Thom Bell being their A&R man) the third on Warner Bros, and the last three on Gold Mind created by Norman Harris in 1976 and distributed by Salsoul.

Performing on their albums where (Ron) Baker, (Earl) Young & (Norman) Harris along with Bobby Eli, Ron Kersey, Vince Montana and my other musicians instrumental in the Philly Sound throughout the 70s.

Although the group disbanded in 1980 a couple of attempts to revive the group were undertaken by various members at different times. In Aug 2014 the group reunited to perform at the Salsoul Records reunion concert at the East River Park Amphitheatre in New York with the three original members Rochelle Fleming, Annette Guest, Wardell Piper, and Ursula Herring (who replaced Joyce Jones in 1976). They continue to tour with original member Annette Guest, Ursula Herring and new member Andre A. Jackson.

As the sound files are only available for two weeks (until 1 Jan 2023) I've not posted samples this time as full length versions are available to listen to on Paul's new website. They should appear at top of page, if they are not there then it means they are no longer available.

Betty Wright - A Profile - Part 1/3: The Playlist

Betty Wright (Bessie Regina Norris 21 Dec 1953 - 10 May 2020) would have been 69 today. She was born in Miami, FL, one of seven children and sang in the family gospel group Echoes Of Joy aged two in 1956 until 1965.  Her siblings include Milton Wright, Phillip 'Leno' Wright (aka Leno Phillips), Jeanette Wright-Black (aka Holloway aka Williams), and Charles A. Wright.
Story has it that Betty sang "Summertime" in a record store owned by Johnny Pearsall, who also owned a fledgling label Deep City with Willie Clarke, and signed her when she was just 12 years old. He released her first single "Good Lovin'" / "Paralyzed" in July 1967 on Deep City. Numero Group released a four track EP, "Deep City Recordings", in Jun '22 with both sides along with another single "Mr. Lucky" and "Thank You Baby" released on Solid Soul and the only release for the label which presumably was related to Deep City.

Her first album, "My First Time Around", was recorded in 1968 on Atco which produced her first hit single "Girls Can't Do What The Guys Do" on Alston (presumably Alston leased the album for release by Atco?). After a few more minor hits she hit the big time in 1971 with "Clean Up Woman" which would prove to be the biggest hit of her career reaching #1 R&B and #6 hot 100 at the tender age of just 17. That song didn't register across the pond and she had to wait until 1975 when two songs entered the UK Top 40 pop chart with "Shoorah Shooorah" (#27) and "Where Is The Love" (#25) co-written with Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch (KC & The Sunshine Band) for which she won a Grammy for Best R&B Song. It was a period where the proto-disco 'Miami Sound" was crossing over driven, in the main, by KC & The Sunshine Band.

Betty recorded 19 studio albums between 1968 and 2014. She died from cancer in 2020 aged 66 and a short tribute was done at the time which included her singles discography but not her albums so it's well overdue rectifying that.

As well as recording her own material she featured and sang backing vocals on many other artists recordings, far too many to list them all, which included: Gwen McCrae, Timmy Thomas ("You're The Song") , Milton Wright, Latimore, Stevie Wonder ("All I Do"), Gloria Estefan,  Richard Dimples Fields,("She's Got Papers") Angie Stone, Joss Stone (she produced "Mind Body & Soul" which was nominated for a Grammy) and many more.

A single post would be too unwieldy, therefore two separate parts have been created, with this section giving some background and a playlist below.

Check out parts 2 & 3 here:

A full discography of her singles including links to YouTube for those that are available.

A full discography of her studio albums. All but three of her albums are available to buy digitally and are on Spotify. This post contains links to Spotify to listen and Amazon/Apple to buy.

2011 - Betty Wright: The Movie – with the Roots [Ms.B Records #0731519012]
2014 - Living...Love...Lies [Ms.B Records]

Betty Wright has recorded just so much good music it was very difficult narrowing it down so I've tried to limit the playlist to a maximum of two/three tracks per album. Some of her later and more recent material, which may have gone overlooked (especially "Fit For A King" album), is too good to omit.

There are three of her albums that are not available on Spotify (or currently available digitally) which contain tracks that would have been considered. At least four great tracks on Betty Wright (1981)  "I Like Your Lovin'", "Give A Smile", "Make Me Love The Rain" and the killer "One Bad Habit" and another couple from "Wright Back At You" (1983) "I Promise You" and "Show Me" but most of the remainder of the album suffered from that horrible 80s production.

The other album not available digitally is a live album released in 1992 "All The Way Live" which is her performance at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, in Oct. 1989.
