Anita Pointer (Pointer Sisters) - A Profile

The eldest, and only surviving, sister from the original Pointer Sisters line-up, Anita Pointer, died on New Years Eve 2022 from cancer aged 74. This is a re-post of the tribute paid to her on news of her demise to celebrate what would have been her 75th birthday.

The group was set up by younger sisters June (d 2006 52) and Bonnie (d 2020 69) as a duo (Pointers, a Pair) in 1969 with Anita joining later. They were signed to Atlantic where they released just two singles in 1971-72. The flip side of the second in 1972, "Send Him Back", was huge on the Northern Soul scene a few years later.
The Pointer Sisters' breakthrough single was an Allen Toussaint song "Yes We Can Can", on which Anita sang lead, released on Blue Thumb in 1973 by which time they were joined by a fourth sister, Ruth. Bonnie left for a solo career in 1978 leaving them a trio once more.

Their music was quite eclectic to say the least with a single "Fairytale" winning a Grammy in 1975 for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group and was also nominated for Best Country Song and their 80s/90s material was pop, rock, electro, disco. The song was written by Anita and Bonnie and later recorded by Elvis.

They had most commercial success in the 80s with songs like "He's So Shy", "Slow Hand", "Automatic", "Jump (For  My Love)" and "I'm So Excited". Two further Grammy's were awarded in 1985 for "Automatic" (Best Vocal Arrangement for Two or More Voices), "Jump (For  My Love)" (Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal). They were first to cover Prince's "I Feel For You" in 1982 on "So Excited" before Chaka Khan had a worldwide hit with it in 1984.

In 1987 Anita released a solo album "Love For What It Is" from which "More Than A Memorywas a club hit (video below). She also released a duet with  Earl Thomas Conley "Too Many Times" which was a #2 Country hit. Apparently, she recorded a solo album in 1977 for ABC that was never released. She had been working on an album, "Take Me Away", which was a collection of unreleased recordings.

The Pointer Sisters released around fifteen studio albums between 1973-93.

Anita retired from the group in 2015 owing to ill health and in 2020 wrote a book "Fairytale: The Pointer Sisters' Family Story". She died in her Beverly Hills home on 31 Dec 2022 surrounded by her family. Her only daughter Jada died in 2006 and a song ("Jada") was written for her on their debut, eponymous, album in 1973.

The group continues to perform with Ruth, her daughter Issa (with ex Temptation Dennis Edwards)  and granddaughter Sadako.

R.I.P. - Thom Bell (27 Jan 1943 - 22 Dec 2022)

What's the saying, 'it never rains but it pours'? After a tribute yesterday to Sam Hutchins of The Masqueraders, news has arrived of the death of a true soul music legend, songwriter, musician, arranger and producer Thom Bell aged 79.
Where do you even begin to write about his contribution to soul music? Best just to let his music do the talking with the playlist below which only scrapes the surface.

He was born in Kingston, Jamaica on 26 Jan 1943 but raised in Philadelphia and trained as a classical musician. He became one of the architects of Philly soul along with Gamble & Huff who formed a publishing company Mighty Three Music together, but he never partnered with them when they formed Philadelphia International Records choosing to go his own way.

Bell recorded a single with Kenny Gamble in 1962 as Kenny & Tommy on Heritage and was a member of Kenny Gamble & The Romeos with Gamble & Huff who released a couple of singles in 1965 and 1967. He focused on writing, arranging and producing and is perhaps best known for his work with The Delfonics, The Stylistics and The Spinners in particular.

We mentioned him only a few days ago when posting First Choice The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions as he was A&R man for Philly Groove and worked with their main act The Delfonics on Moon Shot from 1966 before they joined Philly Groove in 1968. He had been working with the likes of Chubby Checker at Cameo Parkway prior to that aged only 22.

By 1971 he teamed up with Linda Creed and they produced multiple hits initially for The Stylistics and then The Spinners who had just left Motown.

His awards include a Grammy for Best Producer of the Year (1974), induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (Jun 2006) and induction into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum (2016).

The playlist below selects six tracks from each of The Delfonics, The Stylistics and The Spinners most written by Bell with a couple not written but arranged or produced by him. Then for our rare/Northern Soul brethren a selection of tracks he was involved with in some capacity, either writer, arranger or producer, including a few with his cousin Archie Bell (& The Drells) and the mighty O'Jays.

R.I.P. - Bertha Barbee-McNeal (The Velvelettes) (1942 - 16 Dec 2022)

Co-founding member of The Velvelettes Bertha Barbee-McNeal died yesterday (16 Dec '22), I believe she was 80/81.

She formed the group with school friend, at Western Michigan University, Mildred Gill Arbor in 1961 and recruited her cousin Norma Barbee-Fairhurst and Gill's sister Carolyn ('Cal' Carolyn Gill-Street) who in turn brought in her friend Betty Kelley (who left before their 1965 hit "Needle In A Haystack" to join Martha & The Vandellas).

They originally named themselves Les Jolie Femmes (The Pretty Women) later changing it to The Velvelettes when their voices were described as velvet. I've read reports that Gail Sonders was a member in 1965/66 for the TV appearance on 'Where The Action Is'. She went on to sing with Hot Ice in the 70s and later changed her name to Floreece Davis.
A school classmate was the nephew of Berry Gordy who encouraged them to audition for Motown who they were signed to in 1962. Their first single "There He Goes" / "That's The Reason Why" was released on IPG (Independent Producers Group) in Jun 1963. The song was written and produced by William 'Mickey' Stevenson and included Stevie Wonder on harmonica. I guess it was one of those Jobete songs that Motown decided not to release so was released independently.

Their first Motown single "Needle In A Haystack" was released in Sep 1964 on the V.I.P. imprint. Sadly, they were rather neglected by Motown who by this time had Diana Ross & The Supremes, Martha & The Vandellas and The Marvelettes all having hits, and they only released another four singles "He Was Really Sayin' Somethin'" (covered in the 1982 by Bananarama who had a #4 UK pop hit with it), "Lonely Lonely Girl Am I", "A Bird In The Hand (Is Worth Two In The Bush)", "These Things Will Keep Me Loving You" all of which have become firm favourites on Northern Soul dancefloors in the north of England with their last record reaching #34 on UK pop chart in 1971 on UK reissue after latent NS exposure.

The group recorded "Dancing In The Street" which was eventually released by Martha & The Vandellas, which makes you wonder what might have happened to them had Gordy released their version?
Mildred Gill, Norma Barbee, Cal Gill, Betty Kelly , Bertha Barbee
By 1967 they had disbanded with  Mildred Gill, Norma and Bertha Barbee leaving to raise families leaving just Carolyn who recruited Sandra Tilley (another who would later become a Vandella in 1968) and Annette McMillan who continued the group until Carolyn Gill's marriage to Richard Street of The Monitors (who later joined The Temptations) in 1969.
Cal Gill, Mildred Gill, Bertha Barbee
The group reunited in the mid 80s for concert performances and Ian Levine, as he did with many 60s Motown acts, re-recorded their hits and new material for his Nightmare and Motorcity labels. Whilst at Motown they recorded a self-titled album that was scheduled for V.I.P. 401 but was unreleased, so their first album "One Door Closes" appeared on Motorcity in 1990. Motown  released two compilations of their material in 1999 "The Very Best Of The Velvelettes" and 2004 The Motown Anthology" (containing 48, many previously unreleased, tracks) with another "The Best Of" appearing on Spectrum in 2001.

Bertha was a trained classical pianist and gained a bachelor's and master's degrees in music from Western Michigan University and became a music teacher in Kalamazoo Public Schools, where she taught for 26 years before retiring in 2002. The group continued to perform to this day.

Included below are both sides of all their singles plus a few unreleased songs. A few videos, whilst they claim are from 65/66, seem to be the members of the later formation of Gill, Tilley and McMillan. Certainly on "These Things" at least as that looks like Sandra Tilley on the left  and Gail Sonders is on "Really Saying Something" (on left who also appears on the first), but is the only footage available and none seem to contain Bertha. Therefore, included is their 1987, re-recording of their first hit which includes all four original members along with their last Levine recording "It Keeps Reminding Me (Of Happy Memories)" where they are missing Norma from the line-up.
