Richie Merrett Vs These Gents [1973/1974] - Yesterday Standing By [C-Way / Western World]

A record I've owned and loved since release in 1974 by These Gents "Yesterday Standing By" on Soulvation Army (courtesy of John Anderson's Soul Bowl) and also released on Western World which is a slightly different, and longer, take is the subject of the latest release on Soul Junction who John set up with Dave Welding.

These Gents were from Pittsburgh, PA, and this is their only recording and was only one of two released on Soulvation Army which appears to have been a Western World offshoot. They were formed in 1964 by LeRoy Grammer, Wayne Walker (who had been members of ElRoy & The Excitements and then The Enchantments) along with two members of 50s/early 60s doo wop group The Altairs, Bill Herndon and Richard Harris. The name could well have been derived from 'Dee's Gents' who were Dinah Washington's backing group which Herndon and Harris were also members of along with Chuck Barksdale and Johnny Carter of The Dells and Cornell Gunter of The Coasters. The other Soulvation Army single is the Northern Soul spin from Flora Wilson / The Soulvation Army Band "Dancing On A Daydream". So I assume the Western World issue was the first issue and appears to be the last single released on the label?

Forthcoming in April on Soul Junction is the original version by Richie Merrett released a year earlier on C-Way which seems to be the only release on the label so presumably a private press? The title is slightly different "You'll Always Have Yesterday Standing By"

It appears to be his only release but Discogs links him to a Richie Merritt who released two albums in 1998 and 2005 and a few singles in the early 90s. I had to double take as the photo on his first album he looks remarkably like Bobby Hutton. 45Cat links the the C-Way single with his 90s singles so it looks like it is the same artist (and perhaps the first single was a misspelling of his name) but why the 20-25 year sabbatical?

The song was written by Rich Calloway who only has one other writing credit to his name on both sides of a single by The Entertains "Love Will Turn It Around" / "Why Couldn't I Believe Them"

Keni Lewis [2022] - B'ae Brother [Epsilon #EPS012]

One of very few solo singles by Keni Lewis (Kenneth St. Lewis) has been reissued on vinyl 7" by Epsilon. The pretty obscure "B'ae Brother" (only 3 listed on Popsike and never sold on Discogs) was recorded in Washington D.C, in 1969 as his debut solo single which had vocal and instrumental sides.

As far as I can tell he only released another two solo singles in the early 70s (both Northern/Modern Soul in-demanders ("Drug Traffic" / "Whats Her Name" 1970 and "What's Your Sign" / "Ain't Gonna Make It Easy" 1973) and another in 1977, "Record City", as Keni St. Lewis.

He was a member of several 60s groups The Dreams (D.C. Sound), The Cairos, The Enjoyables (both on Shrine) and The Chancellors (Cap City) all of which had limited success except on Northern Soul dancefloors.

However, he is best known for his songwriting skills and has 400+ credits on Discogs, with the most recognisable when teamed with Freddie Perren on several hits for Tavares e.g. "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel", "Don't Take Away The Music" in the mid 70s. He also penned several songs for artists on Eddie Singleton's, now legendary, Shrine label in the mid 60s such as D.C.Blossoms, The Cairos, Shirley Edwards, The Counts and The Cavaliers as well as established artists like Billy Butler, Gene Chandler, The O'Jays, The Sylvers, The Coasters and more.

Available now from Epsilon.

Incidentally a superb Northern Soul dancer from him (?), "Not The Marrying Kind", was unearthed on an unreleased acetate which was bootlegged in 2016 and also appeared on white test press copies around 2007. Pete Smith pressed up 150 copies with Mark Lloyd "When I'm Gonna Find Her" (UK Parlophone 1966) on the flip. He sold approx. 30 and then passed them on to John Manship to sell (SoulSource). The acetate is believed to have been found/owned by Allan Kitchener and Rob Thomas and Andy Rix played it out.

To throw in a little curved ball. The song was released by Federal Green in 2018 as Leroy Taylor (who released a single on Shrine (another unreleased turned up later) and  "Oh Linda" on Brunswick in 1967). They sound the same to my ears and I heard Richard Searling say that he believed that it may have been a song written by Keni Lewis for another artist. So is the singer on the acetate Keni Lewis or actually Leroy Taylor, I would guess Leroy Taylor is the singer and perhaps the acetate had the writer's name on it which is why it was originally thought to be Keni Lewis?

Kim Tibbs [2022] - Where Would I Be Without You? [Izipho Soul] OUT NOW!

After and unfortunate 'false start' last week, Kim Tibbs' new single "Where Would I Be Without You?" is now 'officially' available on Bandcamp as of yesterday (13 Mar 2022).

After a five year hiatus Kim Tibbs will be releasing a new album "THE SCiENCE OF COMPLETiON VOLUME I". It was recorded at the legendary Royal Studios in Memphis with a live 25 piece orchestra featuring many renown musicians. The epic double album on which Ms Tibbs has been working for the last five years, will be released on vinyl by Izipho Soul later his year around summer time.

The single will also be available on 7" vinyl, probably in May with pressing plants permitting. Our man Roger Williams has been let loose with his crayons one more time for the cover art for both single and album.

Kim had several UK Soul Chart hits in 2016 with "I Need You For Your Love" and "Soul" along with "Drifting", "For!" and "Move" all featuring on her debut album "Kim" released 25 Aug 2017 by Ralph Tee's Expansion Records which was posted earlier this week as a teaser.

Luck [2022] - All The Diamonds [Boosted Records]

The latest single from L.A. based Luck, "All The Diamonds" has been out for over a month (4 Feb 2022) which seem to have gone under the radar and needs some love as it's one of the much better ones of the genre.

I'm not able to find any information about her but this is her ninth single since 2018.
