Mia Manchester [2021] - Show And Tell [Sound Gems Records]

Another cover courtesy of Sound Gems by Mia Manchester which I have always considered was originally released by Al Wilson but have just discovered that Johnny Mathis did the first version of "Show and Tell" just before him in May 1973. I don't believe I had ever heard his version until doing this post!

The song was written by Jerry Fuller who Northern Soulies will know for his 1966 stomper "Double Life" on Challenge and most will know for his song "Young Girl" a #1 hit (UK) for Gary Puckett & The Union Gap in 1968. The 'definitive version of "Show And Tell" was recorded by Al Wilson the same year as Johnny Mathis (1973) which was a Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit yet only reached #10 R&B!

SecondHandSongs lists only a dozen versions but there are many more than that as there are at least another dozen not listed: Bobbi Marchini  (1973), Maceo (1974), Cleo Laine (1974 LP), Professor Lett And Study (1974 LP),  Don Julian & The Larks (1974 LP), The I.G's (1975), Elusion (1982 LP), Contrast (1984 LP), Willie Clayton (1987), David Cassidy (1998 LP), Eddie Leon (2001 LP which also contains his modern soul gem "Just Got Tired Of Waiting" written by Tommy Tate).

Mia Manchester [2021] - Figures Can't Calculate / Love Comes So Easy With You [Sound Gems Records]

Sound Gems continue to plunder the catalogue of William DeVaughn with not only a cover of "Figures Can't Calculate" by Mia Manchester released on 19 Nov 2021, but also an album track from his second album ("Figures Can't Calculate The Love I Have For You") "Love Comes So Easy With You". The first written by DeVaughn and the second by Frank Fioravanti who also produced the album.

It's a more contemporary take rather than a straight cover. Listening to DeVaughn's original of "Figures Can't Calculate" it is reminiscent of Major Harris' "Love Won't Let Me Wait"

Davante Devaughn [2022] - Creme De Creme [Sound Gems Records]

Well, as luck would have it after the last post of Davante Devaughn's "Be Thankful For What You Got" Radio Edit, I checked out his YouTube Topic channel and noticed another William DeVaughn cover posted today (7 Mar 2022).

This time it's his 1982 HCRC, vinyl only, recording of "Creme De Creme" written and produced by Frank Fioravanti.

The only place I can actually find it is on Deezer which states that it was released on 3 Mar 2022 but it obviously hasn't reached the other main DSPs e.g Amazon, Apple or Spotify yet!

Davante Devaughn [2022] - Be Thankful for What You Got (Radio Edit) [Sound Gems Records]

Frank Fioravanti's Sound Gems Records released this cover by Davante Devaughn back on 5 Jan which was a 5:13 version. They have released a shorter 4:40 Radio Edit today (7 Mar 2022), presumably to drum up airplay. It also states that it's a 'clean' version but don't recall any explicit content in the previous version.

It's a faithful cover of the 1974 William DeVaughn original and, as stated previously, Davante is no relation, and I suspect that it may not be his real name? Philly's Frank Fioravanti produced  the 1974 original with John Davis.

Yo Yo Honey [2022] - GROOVE ON (Soul Sessions) (Groove On Perfecto Remix) [Black Sugar Music]

I was surprised to find this (re)released today (7 Mar 2022).  YoYo Honey are Anita Jarrett, Anna Ross, Mani Shoniwa (Win) who released "Groove On" originally in 1991. It has been reissued several times, in 1993 and an "M & S Epic Klub Mix" in 1997 and again digitally in 2012.

I recall first hearing it when Terry Jones played it at a gig I used to promote in 2000/01 and it still sounds fresh.

The Bump Band [2022] - Our Music [Lotuspool Records] (Full Album)

Billed as The Bump Band Feat. Bump Funk, Bump Funk is in fact Jerald Scott who led several bands in and around Kansas City from the 60s to the 80s. i.e. Bump & The Soul Stompers, Unnatural Funk Band, The Bump Band and Bad News Band.

The band consisted of Jerald 'Bump' Scott (keyboards), Robert 'Snookie' Clarkson (guitar), Robert Kelly (bass), Herman 'Hammer' Lacy (drums), Terry 'Grim' Grimmett (sax) and Wanda Byrd (vocals along with all band members).

They recorded "Our Music" in 1983 which was never released. The tapes got lost but were discovered in Bump's attic and his son Jeremy passed them to Lotuspool Records who digitally remastered the damaged analogue tapes.

In amongst the funk tracks are a couple of sweet soul ballads "Living In The Past" and "Love's Gently Flowing".

In 2013 Numero Group released a couple of singles involving Jerald Scott, Unnatural Funk Band "Strange Happenings" / "Living In The Past" and Bump And The Soul Stompers, "I Can Remember" / "Standing On The Outside".

Lexie [2022] - Not Sweet Enough [Self Released]

Here's another song that uses the same sample as Tessie "Let Me Know" and JAZ "Let's Stay In The House" so I assume it's one of those public domain samples freely available.

This time it's the turn of Lexie who released "Not Sweet Enough" on 28 Feb 2022 but isn't available on Amazon (yet?). She appears to be a new artists as I can find nothing else by her.
