Marvin Gaye [1971] - What's Going On [Tamla] 53rd Anniversary

Generally regarded as the, or at least one of the, finest soul albums ever recorded celebrates its 53rd birthday today.

The end of the 60s and beginning of the 70s was a troubled time for the 'Trouble Man'. The loss of his partner Tammi Terrell to a brain tumour, the failure of his marriage to Anna Gordy, IRS issues, a growing addiction to cocaine and disputes with Motown. After Terrell's death he refused to perform live and when Motown released his "That's The Way Love Is" album he refused to promote it.

In 1969, whilst touring with the Four Tops, Renaldo 'Obie' Benson experienced police brutality and violence on anti-war protesters. Upon return to Detroit, after conversations about his experiences with Al Cleveland, they wrote "What's Going On". Benson offered the song to the Four Tops who refused it as they regarded it a protest song. He then offered it to Gaye who suggested that the song would be perfect for The Originals but Benson persuaded him that it was a song for him. He accepted the song on the condition that he could change it and added a new melody and lyrics.

Gaye approached Gordy in Sep 1970 with the song who is alleged to have said that it the worst song he had ever heard in his life. In disgust, Gaye went on strike until Gordy changed his mind and in the intervening time recorded his own music, much of it featuring on "Let's Get It On". Motown's Quality Control Team also turned the song down.

Without Gordy's knowledge or approval, Motown executive Harry Balk, with the assistance of Barney Ales, released copies to record stores in Jan 1971. It became Motown's fastest selling single of all time selling 200k copies in the first week alone topping Billboard's R&B chart and reaching #2 on the Hot 100.

The success stunned Gordy who then asked Gaye to record an album and told him that he could do his own thing as long as the album was completed in 30 days. The songs on the album were influenced by the single, along with letters he received from his brother serving in Vietnam regarding the treatment of veterans and his experience of social injustices. It took Gaye only ten days to record at Studio A (Hitsville) and Studio B (Golden World). Gordy was concerned that there were no more hits on the completed album and as a compromise Gaye had it remixed. The Quality Control team were also concerned that each song was segued into the next but Gordy allowed it.

The album was one of the first soul concept albums and its free-flowing, nine segued tracks gave it a cohesive feel. The lead track is the title track that segues into "What's Happening Brother", dedicated to his brother Frankie explaining the disillusionment of war veterans who returned to civilian life. "Flyin' High (In the Friendly Sky)", takes from a United Airlines tag, "fly the friendly skies", and deals with heroin dependence.  "Save the Children" speaks for itself as does the following track with a truncated version of "God Is Love". "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" is an emotional plea for the environment and "Right On" focused on Gaye's own divided soul with "Wholy Holy" being a gospel plea advising people to come together. The final track, "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)", focuses on urban poverty.

The album became Motown's biggest selling album also topping the R&B chart and peaking at #6 on Billboard's Top 100 Albums staying on the chart for 58 weeks.

Only two further singles were released from it, "Mercy Mercy Me ((The Ecology)" and "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)". Both topped the R&B Chart and were Top 10 Hot 100 hits making Gaye the first artist to achieve three #1 hits on any Billboard chart, as well as the first male solo artist to have three Hot 100 Top 10 singles, from the same album.

Needless to say, the album has been reissued numerous times many with additional bonus, instrumental and remixed tracks. Although it did very well commercially on release, it's critical acclaim has grown even further over time like a fine wine and no true soul aficionado  is, or shouldn't be, without it in their collection in one format or another. Be honest, when did you last listen to it in it's entirety?

Below are two music videos of the title track. The first is an extended mix and the second an 'official' one from 2019.

Danny Losito & SLAMTWISTED [2023] - Children Of The Ghetto [Irma Records]

Italian DJ / producer / singer Danny Losito and DJ / musician / producer SLAMTWISTED (Umby Bebbo (Umberto Behboudi) last featured here with their version of "Can't Hide Love" in Aug. Since then in Sep they released another cover ,Steely Dan's "Do It Again" and they are back with yet another cover.

This time out they interpret Chris & Eddie Amoo's "Children Of The Ghetto" first released on The Real Thing's "4 From 8" in 1977 before getting a single release as the flip to their 1979 disco hit "Can You Feel The Force".

Several others have recorded the song, perhaps most notably EWF's Phillip Bailey in 1984 and our favourite by UK saxophonist Courtney Pine feat. ex Supreme Susaye Green in 1986.

Percy Sledge & Budapest Symphony Orchestra [2023] - When A Man Loves A Woman (Re-Recorded) [Orchestral Version] [Cleopatra Records]

On the back of the Northern Soul Proms a couple of weeks ago and several other orchestralised albums (e.g. Al Green, Motown, Myles Sanko to name a few), Percy Sledge's 1966 classic get the orchestral treatment via Budapest Symphony Orchestra.

Sadly it is probably the only song known by many from him which charted twice in the UK reaching #4 initially in 1966 and #2 when reissued in 1987 as a result of it featuring in one of the Levi's TV commercials. His only other UK chart hit was the 1966 follow-up single "Warm And Tender Love". "When A Man Loves A Woman" was his very first release which hit #1 on Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts.  Needless to say he never managed to equal it's success.

The song was written by two members of Sledges' group The Esquires (Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright) and originally recorded at Rick Hall's Fame Studios in Muscle Shoal. When a deal was struck with Atlantic Records, Jerry Wexler requested that it be re-recorded as he thought that the horns were out of tune. It was duly re-recorded at DJ Quin Ivy's Norala Studios, however, there was a tape mix up and it was actually the original recording that was released.

Sledge died of liver cancer in 2015 aged 74.

Allen Stone & EJ Worland [2023] - Many Rivers To Cross [AMR Songs]

You just can't keep a good song down! A classic song, "Many Rivers To Cross", written and first recorded in Dec 1969 by Jimmy Cliff. It has been covered up to a hundred times, initially by Percy Sledge, but Martha Reeves also did it on her debut solo album in 1974. Perhaps the most famous version was by UB40 in 1983 from "Labour Of Love".

Cliff's original failed to chart and the only other version to chart in the UK was by Cher in 1993. A few other notable soul versions were by Lorraine Ellison, Oleta Adams and Marcia Hines and many pop artists have had a 'pop' at it including Joe Cocker, Bryan Adams, Walker Brothers and Annie Lennox.

Cliff says that he wrote the song out of frustration after emigrating from Jamaica to the UK in his teens and not being able to break through. It's one of only a few of his recordings to feature organ which gives it a gospel feel.

The latest rendition is by Allen Stone & EJ Worland released today. Allen Stone is a blue-eyed soul singer from Chewelah, Washington and EJ Worland is an Australian who has been performing on Stone's "Live At The Lodge" shows. The show is filmed every week in Eastern Washington State at the one hundred year old former speakeasy, The Zephyr Lodge. This song was recorded there in Oct 2020, so it's taken a while for them to decide to release it.

Marvin Gaye [2023] - Let's Get It On (Deluxe Edition) [Motown] (Full Album) 50th Anniversary Edition

A 50th anniversary deluxe edition of Marvin Gaye's seminal album "Let's Get It" is released today. The official 50th anniversary is 28 Aug.

The album, of course, has been reissued multiple times over the years (Discogs lists no fewer than 175 versions). The original 1973 release had the first eight tracks. Various Deluxe Editions have appeared with various combinations of bonus tracks over the years. The 50th anniversary edition has the original eight tracks plus 33 bonus tracks, 18 of which are unreleased.

The new tracks (demos, re-recordings and instrumentals) are compiled from different recording sessions, including the 1972 and 1973 sessions and the David Van DePitte Sessions.

The album became Gaye's biggest selling album with the title track becoming his second Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit following "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" in 1968. Three further singles would also chart, "Come Get To This" (#3 R&B / #21 Hot 100), "You Sure Love To Ball" (#13 R&B / #50 Hot 100) and "Distant Lover" (#12 R&B / #28 Hot 100). Prior to "Distant Lover" being issued as an A side (it was originally the flip to "Come Get To This") Gaye released several duets with Diana Ross.

The album is available digitally, on CD, vinyl and Blu-Ray, but beware as we believe that the full 41 track version may only available digitally!

Syl Johnson [2023] - Is It Because I'm Black b/w Let Them Hang High [Numero Group]

A song that has featured her on various occasions by different artists (e.g Ken Boothe, Nicky Thomas as well as Syl Johnson), "Is It Because I'm Black", has been digitally reissued (again) today by Numero Group along with the original B side of the Syl Johnson 1969 Twinight release "Let Then Hang High".

We would guess that they have utilised the image from the 1970 Spanish picture sleeve release.

Numero Group also reissued it in 2021 with "Different Strokes".

The Lovelites [2023] - Love So Strong: The Lovelite Recordings [P-Vine] (Full Album)

As if one album from The Lovelites was not enough those wonderful people at P-Vine have also released another today, a 16 track compilation "Love So Strong: The Lovelite Recordings".

There is no duplication as these recordings are from their post Uni days when they released material on their own Lovelite imprint and on Cotillion.

It consists of virtually all their A & B sides from their singles from that period with a couple of glaring omissions i.e. no "Love Bandit" and "We've Got The Real Thing" but does include an unreleased recording of their interpretation of "Betcha By Golly, Wow", which has featured on a previous compilation. Curiously, The Lovelites version of "Love Bandit", nor "We've Got The Real Thing", has appeared on any of their compilations, perhaps the master tapes are damaged or lost?

"Love Bandit" was a popular Northern Soul spin for Keanya Collins (aka Renee Marks who co-wrote the song with Byron Gregory) who released it as "Barnabus Collins - Love Bandit" on Keanya Records in 1969/70. As it was so popular, it was bootlegged by the notorious Simon Soussan on Soul Galore and reissued by Grapevine in 1978.

This one is also available on CD and vinyl.

The Lovelites [2023] - With Love From The Lovelites [P-Vine] (Full Album)

What an absolute joy to come across this reissue of one of our all time favourite albums "With Love From The Lovelites" from The Lovelites which has been released digitally today.

It's their only official album which was released on Uni in 1970 although three compilations of their music have been released. An original vinyl copy would set you back at least a couple of hundred notes (one has even sold for as much as £500 on Discogs).

The album has been released by Japanese label P-Vine who also released it on limited edition CD and vinyl in Jan this year.

We did a Lovelites Profile last year so, rather than regurgitate it here, visit that page for more information. There is also a good article about the group on Chicago Reader site.

They are yet another act so criminally neglected by the mainstream and achieved only two R&B chart entries with "How Can I Tell Mom & Dad" (#15 R&B / #60 Hot 100 in 1969) and "My Conscience" (#36 1971 video included below). Only the former is included on the album as the latter came afterwards).

Their last single, "Get It Off My Conscience" in 1975, was a departure from their mid-tempo sweet soul offerings and was a monster record in the mid 70s on Northern Soul dancefloors and was reissued in the UK by Grapevine in 1978.

Deniece 'Niecy' Williams was a short-term member who left in 1970 to join Stevie Wonder's Wonderlove.

The song "I Love You Yes I Do" was also recorded by twin sisters Pat & Pam (Cordell who were the daughters of WVON DJ/singer Lucky Cordell) on Our Own in 1971 as well as a sax led instrumental version by their producer Johnny Cameron & The Camerons on Lock Central in 1969 which got picked up by Atlantic. There is another more jazz instrumental on Atlantic from 1973 by Rahsaan Roland Kirk which is almost unrecognisable as the same song.

Eugene Record (Chi-Lites) wrote "A Certain Kind Of Lover" which was recorded by Diane Cunningham on Fontana in 1968 which included "You've Hurt Me Now" on the flip which was also recorded by Sunday Williams in 1970 on Red Balloon, all rather incestuous.

If you have not yet had the pleasure of hearing The Lovelites then we think you may be blown away. We aren't even going to direct you to any particular track as the album is so full of gems. Timeless soul music of the highest quality which comes highly recommended! If you don't like this then there is no hope for you lol!

This group 'should' have been massive, their tight harmonies are delicious but, as is so often the case, groups with more style than substance got the limelight. The fact that this little known group's music is still appreciated more than 50 years later speaks volumes.

We found a recording from 2019? of Patti Hamilton singing their biggest hit. She looks younger than expected but they where school kids when it was released it in 50 years earlier 1969 so would perhaps be in her mid 60s then?

Clarence Carter [2023] - Lovely Day [Delta Music]

Clarence Carter is perhaps best known in the mainstream for "Patches", a #4 Billboard Hot 100 and #2 UK pop chart hit (his only one) in 1970 (it stayed at #2 for three weeks in Oct-Nov being kept off the top spot by the same song, Matthews Southern Comfort "Woodstock") or perhaps his earlier 1968 hit "Slip Away" covered by many.

He is now 87 yrs old and a remastered version of his cover of Bill Withers' "Lovely Day" was released on Friday (7 Jul) along with an instrumental version. We're not 100% sure when it was originally recorded but believe that it may have been 1993 on a compilation "Patches".

He was born blind and briefly married to Candi Staton on 9 Aug 1970, they divorced in 1973 and had a son Clarence Jr.
