Hudson People [2023] - Trip To Your Mind [Backatcha Records #BK050]

A blast from the past, remembering this from back in the day. Hudson People were a soul/funk outfit led by Reginald Hudson and "Trip To Your Mind" was their debut single.  Story has it that they were a six piece group who had been in the army and were playing gigs at army bases in Germany and then came to the UK to do some gigs. They contacted Reg Hudson in the states (who had just completed a tour with The Emotions, he was also played keyboards for  The Commodores) to join them and recorded some songs.

Originally released on 12" in 1979, it was almost 10 mins long so was later split into parts 1 & 2 for 45 release remixed by Soul Mafia DJ's Chris Hill and Robbie Vincent on Hill's Ensign logo and was a big tune in the burgeoning Jazz Funk scene. I think it's also had a rare groove underground following and prices for the original 12" on Hithouse are now hitting three figures.

The group only released two more singles. The follow up "Boogie On Downtown" on Ensign the same year followed by "Boy Scout" on Ballistic which was also issued by United Artists on promo only.

The full 9:58 original 12 " mix has been reissued digitally today by Backatcha Records. It was reissued on 12" in Nov '22 with the Hill/Vincent 9:02 remix on the flip which isn't available digitally as yet, but have included YouTube clip from the label for it below.

Ysa Fernandez is a songwriter/producer from Nashville, TN, who has written many songs featured on TV shows like "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" and "Selling Sunset". she's also recorded around a dozen herself since 2019 with the latest being "Space" released today (17 Feb '23).

Aisyla Arriet [2023] - Patience [Self Released]

Aisyla Arriet is a relatively new artist from Atlanta, GA, who featured here in Oct '22 with a four track EP "Villain".

She seems to have emerged in 2021 and has now released four singles and an EP since her first  single "Cheating And Lying" in May 2021.

Her latest single "Patience" is a soulful ballad which has an old school feel. We commented on the EP review that her voice sounded a little naïve in places suggesting perhaps she was quite young and we have the same feeling about this vocal but the song is very good.

Curiously all song writing credits are to Sydney T Jones, her real name perhaps?

Rina Chanel [2023] - Je Ne Sais Quoi [PhillieBOP Productions]

The new single "Je Ne Sais Quoi" from Rina Chanel was officially released today (17 Feb '23) and was posted from promo on 26 Jan '23 despite SoulTracks stating that when they posted it on 15 Feb that it was a 'World Premiere'! 😉

Rina hails from Virginia Beach, VA, and was a backing singer with Tracy Hamlin before starting her solo career in 2020. She featured on Raymond Barton's 2017 EP "If Only For Love" on "Don't Give Up On Love".

She first appeared on the blog in March 2021 with her third single "More Than Enough" which followed up her UK Soul Chart top 10 hit "Made" (Sep 2020), which in turn followed her debut single "Worthy" released in Jan 2020. Her latest appearance was with her last single "E.S.P."  in July '22.

David P Stevens [2023] - Dance With Me [Self Released]

Although not featuring with his own post here previously, David P Stevens has cropped up a number of times. Co-writing one of the picks of last year "On Everything" sung by LaToya London and Anthony Hamilton and also featuring on Val B. King's "So Many Ways" album as well as appearing on podcasts by Roger Soulsorts Williams.

He has a new solo single out on Valentines Day, "Dance With Me".

Destiny La Vibe Music [2023] - Starlight [LaVibe Music]

Destiny La Vibe Music (Destiny Jael Brown-Hernandez) broke onto the music scene during the Summer of 2022, releasing her first album "Up Down Love" (Sep '22). Since then she went back into her laboratory of soulful vibes and began recording her sophomore album entitled "Positive Vibes Only". The first single from it is "Starlight" released today (17 February '23). It's funky, jazzy, soulful, and of marked with her signature ability to create a vibe!

Destiny La Vibe Music is a native New Yorker who grew up listening to a plethora of music from Gospel, Soul, RnB, Disco, Funk, Hip Hop, and honed her velvety, unique, and rich vocals while singing in church as a child. Her first concert was to see the legendary Tina Turner in 1996 during her Wildest Dreams Tour. Her earliest influences were Tina Turner, Patti Labelle, Brandy, Lauren Hill, Betty Wright, Melisa Morgan, Erykah Badu, Bonnie Raitt, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Kim McFarland, the Clark Sisters, and so many other soul stirring singers. 

Destiny writes all of her lyrics and produces her own vocal arrangements. She is certainly aims to be a rising star!
