Frank Riley [2022] - Still Soul [Self Released] (Full Album)


This appears to be a debut self-released album from Frank Riley although his voice sounds 'seasoned' so I would be surprised if he hasn't released other material or been a member of a group. There was a Frank Riley from St Louis who was a member of a German group Soul Kitchen but whether he is the same person I don't know.

His album "Still Soul" (released on 1 Oct 2022) is one for the traditionalists with "Same Old Song" sounding like it's from the 90s. I wasn't too sure about the album at first but it's a bit of a grower with three tracks in particular garnering interest "Don't Walk Away", "Oh Girl" (which has two mixes) and the ballad "Just Can't Never Say No".

Acantha Lang [2022] - It's Gonna Be Alright [Self Released]


Acantha Lang went back to her hometown of  New Orleans in April to attend Jazz Fest. She knew that she was going to need a music video for her forthcoming single "It's Gonna Be Alright" (released in June) and New Orleans was the perfect backdrop for a music video.

Funding a video can be challenging for an independent artist without the backing of a record label and a massive budget but Ms Lang is a believer in achieving anything she puts her mind to. The video premieres on YouTube tonight at 19:00 (UK time).

Since becoming aware of London based Ms. Lang in Feb 2021 with her sophomore single "Lois Lang, dedicated to her mother, she must be one of the hardest working artists around and she is consistently posting live videos on her YouTube channel. This year she has already supported Kenny Thomas, Howard Hewett and most recently Mica Millar. To date since Dec 2020 she has released five singles and a five track EP "Sugar Woman" and is planning a full album.

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 39 (Oct 2022 Wk 39) Spotify Playlist

SoulStrutter selections of the best releases this week 
(Oct 2022 Wk 39)
In no particular order other than tempo. 

Plenty on neo soul releases around last week with the Neo Soul Dirty Dozen extended to two dozen but not so many more traditional soul tunes. A few liberties have been taken as technically The Isley Brothers track included is a cover of Switch (1978), both Beth tracks borrow from Aretha ("Call Me") and S.O.S. Band ("Tell Me If You Still Care") respectively and  DMo!'s "DTFTSW" also dips into the S.O.S. Band song and has been out a couple of weeks on Bandcamp. Carmy Love probably should be in the Covers etc. Dozen as it has a retro feel. Juantia Wynn has been around a few weeks from promo and released on Bandcamp but got an official release on the main DSP's on Friday.

In fact, it could be argued that Gloria Scott is retro and Dennis Taylor is a remix but if all the above were left out there would be very little left to put in the playlist such is the sparsity of good quality original material!

This week's SoulStrutter Selection of the Week goes to JELISA for her debut five track EP "Season Of Vulnerability".

The Neo Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 29 Oct 2022 Wk 39 Spotify Playlist

The SoulStrutter selection of the best Neo Soul releases
for: Oct 2022 Wk 39 in no particular order.

There were a lot more neo soul tunes around than traditional last week so this week it's a double-dozen. The highlight is a debut six track EP by Dutch artist JELISA who featured here in June with "Perspective" along with videos for her other two singles. A few other picks from the pack include Tash, Soulutions feat. Gemma Ashley, Bella Luna, Upper Reality and Tara Lily. 

Upper Reality (aka Jessica Bathea) released a five track EP "Chaotic Neutral" yesterday with only three new tracks but none of them are better than "I'm Cool", although "Stay " is quite pleasant and uses lines from Diana Ross' Reach Out And Touch"

Maysa [2022] - Whatever [Blue Velvet Soul Records]


The new single from Maysa "Whatever" is due out on 10 Oct 2022 along with a video which has already had 100k views on social media via promo. It's a stepper and is the first release since her double single "Make Sure You're Sure" / "Just Stay" in Feb 2022.

All three tracks will be featured on her new album "Music For Your Soul" due in the first quarter of 2023 which will be her fourteenth album.
