Grooveman Spot [2023] - Lie-Sense [Scotoma Music] (Full Album)

Grooveman Spot (aka DJ Kou-G) is Tokyo-based DJ/producer Kouji Asano originally from Sendai. He began his DJ career in 1993, started releasing his own music in 2006 and now has over a dozen albums to his own name as well as being a member of many other groups.

The latest album "Lie-Sense", released today (31 Jul), is full of contemporary and retro beats, some songs sung in Japanese and some in English, and several with jazzy muted horns, but all have a groove if you're not hung up on vocals.

On our first trawl through the immediate highlights are "The Luxury" (which features the vocals of Hannah Springs), "Get It Back", "Hold My Hands",  "All The Way" and "Slow Wine".

Regi Myrix feat. Lamar Kelsey [2023] - If You Don't Mind (Nigel Lowis Remix) [Myrix Media Group]

At the beginning of Jun, producer Regi Myrix collaborated with an up and coming new artist Lamar Kelsey for his first release of 2023, "If You Don't Mind", which is a song from a forthcoming EP "SouLaDeLiCa" which is due in the Autumn.

On Friday (28 Jun) a Nigel Lowis Remix of the song was released. We've included the original to compare side by side.

Kelsey has released just two previous singles "She Knows My Heart" (Apr 2020 followed by "I Can't Get Over You" the following month.

Lydia Newsom [2023] - Caine [Stargod Records]

Lydia Newsom is another new name with a debut single "Caine" released on 28 Jul. We couldn't find anything about her but with a little detective work believe that she is from St Louis, IL, based on her being associated as a dancer with Imperium House of Dance (Belleville) and Roslita's Cantina which is shown in the music video.

It's quite surprising there is a music video for, what appears to be, an independent debut release unless her previous work is no longer available or she used another name.

If hadn't already figured it out from the sleeve image, Caine relates to cocaine.

Doris Duke [2023] - Woman of the Ghetto (Original Mix) / Rhyze - Free (Extended 12" Remix) [Sam Records]

Another Demon Music Group reissue pairs Doris Duke's "Woman of the Ghetto" with Rhyze "Free"

Marlena Shaw first recorded the sister funk anthem "Woman of the Ghetto" on Cadet in 1969 with Doris Duke's version appearing on Sam in 1975. Duke made her recording debut as Doris Willingham (her married name, as she married Gus Willingham of The Cadillacs, she was born Doris Curry)  in 1968, She died in 2019 either aged either 77 or 73 depending on which birth year is correct, as Discogs states 1945 and Wikipedia 1941.

Rhyze were a Jersey City soul/disco band who started out as Soul Unlimited, who met at college, changing their name to Nu-Sound Express Ltd. after meeting Paul Kyser. They released two singles on Silver Dollar Records run by Kyser in 1970. Northern soulies will know Ksyer's name from writing songs like The Superlatives "I Still Love You" and Robbie Lawson "Burning Sensation" (both NS Top 500 tunes).

He also co-wrote Rhyze's second single "Free" in 1980 from their first of only two albums. Their only chart success was the title track of the first album "Just How Sweet Is Your Love" but "Bizzaar", from their second album "Rhyze To the Top", has graced modern soul dancefloors over the years which would have been a better bet for reissue, as it's never been issued as a single, but was released on 20th Century Fox not Sam.

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes feat. Sharon Paige [2023] - Prayin’ / Baby I’m Back [Demon Music Group]

Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes chart success waned after the departure of Teddy Pendergrass in 1975 and they left Philadelphia International in 1976. They released two albums on ABC in 1976-77 and a third, "The Blue Album", on Source in 1979.

The Northern Soul scene pounced on "Prayin'", written by McFadden & Whitehead, which was a huge sound and still gets played today. It was released as a single on three occasions each with different B sides (i.e. "Your Love Is Taking Me On A Journey", "Praying inst." and as the flip to "I Should Be Your Lover") making it easy and cheap to find.

However, Demon Music Group has reissued it on Friday digitally and on vinyl, flipped with "Baby I’m Back", previously an album only track. Both tracks have been remastered by Phil Kinrade.

The lead singer is David Ebo who had the unenviable task of replacing Pendergrass. We did a feature on him last year on 9 Nov which would have been his 72nd birthday on which we posted "Praying'".

Sekou [2023] - Out Of Mind [Island Records] (Full EP)

Sekou Sylla is a new 18 year old London based singer originally from Ashby de la Zouch, Leics. 

He debuted on 12 May with "Better Man" and followed it up with "Forgiving Myself" on 28 Jun, two days before both were included on his debut five track EP "Out Of Mind" (30 Jun).

He has a powerful and distinctive voice for someone so young which, no doubt, was honed in church.

Our top picks are "Be With You" and "You And I", the others are a tad pop oriented in the Ed Sheeran / Lewis Capaldi mould!

He is certainly a rare talent but sadly, more than likely, will be steered down the pop route as he has been signed by a major label.

Rachel Modest [2023] - Beautiful [Numen Records]

It's so refreshing to come across a new release from a 'real' soul singer. Sheffield-born Rachel Modest (aka Miss Modest aka Rachel Bradley) was a finalist in the last season on The Voice UK. We have included her blind audition in Sep '22 singing Donnie Hathaway's "For All We Know" for which she received all four chair turns. She chose Sir Tom Jones and reached the final twelve. Her full journey on The Voice is summarised HERE.

She was the lead singer with The Bluefoot Project in the early noughties and is founder and choir director of Wakefield Community Gospel Choir, she says that 'she cut her stripes' in church.

Today she has released a new single "Beautiful". Rare soulies may be interested in her version of Alice Clark's  (album only original except for a couple of 45 reissues) modern soul favourite "Never Did I Stop Loving You" which she released last year (Apr '22) so we've also included it below.
