Steve Aggasild [2023-03-03] - Soul Struttin' [Soul Music Radio]

This Friday's "Soul Struttin'" show from Steve Aggasild on the brand new radio station Soul Music Radio broadcast on 3rd Mar 2023 between 21:00-23:00 GMT.

The show follows a similar format to his previous shows where Steve digs through his music library to bring you some classic oldies whilst also showcasing many of the best new releases around, although new and old are now intermingled.

Steve now does a show Fri 21:00-23:00 (GMT) on Soul Music Radio and two shows a week on SOTAR Sun 20:00-22:00 (GMT) and Wed 20:00-22:00 (GMT). If you have yet to listen then please do take a listen as he is one of the best UK soul radio presenters around with a 40 year pedigree.

9th Wonder [2023] - Zion VIII [Jamla Records] (Part Album)

Moonchild's Amber Navran is a busy girl, having featured on Jalisa's album ("I'm Not Really Sure...") last month, she also features on six tracks on the latest 9th Wonder album "Zion VIII". The clear standout is a rendition of Anita Baker's "Will You Be Mine" (from "The Songstress" 1983), shortened to "Be Mine". I reckon "Take A Look" samples Gladys Knight & The Pips' "Bourgie Bourgie" or it sounds very like it?

9th Wonder is a Grammy Award Winning Producer, DJ, College Lecturer, and Social Activist Patrick Denard Douthit from Winston-Salem, NC. He has been making Hip-Hop beats since 2002 beginning with a remix album of Nas' 2002 album "God's Son" titled "God's Stepson".

Being introduced to hip-hop in 1982 he immersed himself into it and formed a hip-hop trio Little Brother in 1998 who released and album "The Listening" in 2003. Douthit left in 2007.

We've selected just the first six tracks as the remining 34 (yes 34 as 40 tracks in total) are mainly just beats.

RAZÉ [2023] - Blush [EDYONTHEBEAT]

The latest single by RAZÉ from New Zealand is "Blush" and is her first single since Jan '21. It has been around a month, released 3 Feb, and is only now appearing the the Amazon UK Hot New Releases. It's a bit of a fluffy, lightweight pop song but offer it up as it must be popular with some.

I would assume that her real name is Ezra Williams given hat the name features on writing credits from most of her songs with RAZÉ being an anagram derived from Ezra.

Ten City & Marshall Jefferson [2023] - Love Is Love [Helix Records] (Full Album)

Ten City & Marshall Jefferson came out of their hiatus in 2021 with their first single for 25 years "Be Free". At the tail end of last year they released a single "Love Is Love" which is the title of their new album released on 17 Feb '23.

It includes, obviously, the title track, but also their last single "I Love Me (with WhO)" (13 Jan '23) along with a host of other 'bangers'. My own picks of the pack from the others being "Casual" and "Family".

Billy Valentine & The Universal Truth [2023] My People… Hold On [Acid Jazz / Flying Dutchman]

With three weeks to go before the full album is released on 24 Mar '23, Billy Valentine drips another track as a single, the fifth of eight so far. 

As with all the album's tracks, it's another cover/interpretation, this time of Eddie Kendricks' "My People… Hold On" from his 1972 Tamla album "People… Hold On".

On this track he is joined by Jeff Parker, Pino Palladino & Larry Goldings. Curiously it has not been made available on Bancamp with the other tracks, as yet, but is available on other DSPs.

Valentine has two dates lined up at The Forge in London on 7th & 8th April '23.

Emma Noble [2023] - Break Down the Walls (Don Leisure Funkstrumental Edit) [Cosmos]

Emma Noble released  "Break Down The Walls"  on 10 Feb '23 which had a retro Motown feel. Yesterday a new version, "Break Down the Walls (Don Leisure Funkstrumental Edit)", was released which gives it a new, smoother, and perhaps a more contemporary feel. I can't help but draw comparisons to the sound of Swing Out Sister, albeit they have been in the business for 35 years now!

Her last single "Back On Track" was a duet on Big A.C. with owner Nick Corbin so it's no big surprise that the new single was co-written with Nick who also plays guitar and provides backing vocals. 

Both  versions are available digitally with a 7" available from Bandcamp which doesn't state what the flip will be but guess that it will be the new version?

Emma’s sound is influenced by her deep love for rare soul, funk and disco. She started out as a backing vocalist for ‘New Street Adventure’ (Acid Jazz) from whence Big A.C. founder Nick Corbin came from) and went on to write with Lack of Afro (LOA Records) and has spent the last few years DJing in the UK & Europe as double-decking duo Noble & Heath (Sophie who is married to Nick Corbin and helps run Big A.C. Records).

Princess Freesia [2023] - Stellarsonic (The Soulpersona Remixes) [Sunset City Records] (Full Alum)

Hot on the heels of his recent remastering of his 2009 debut album, "Soulacoaster", Morgan Howell, aka Soulpersona, has launched a set of remixes for Princess Freesia titled "Stellarsonic (The Soulpersona Remixes)" which consists of four tracks, plus instrumentals of them, from her 2016 album "Stellarsonic!"

He tells us "I made these remixes initially back in 2016, but recently revisited the sessions in 2023. I realised that they sounded nowhere near my standards these days so set about giving them a refresh with new drums, a fresh mix and some mastering attention... something I didn't bother doing first time round as I couldn't afford it at the time! If you picked up the mixes in 2016, you'll instantly hear an improvement on these mixes!". 

Whilst the first four tracks are available to stream on Spotify, I believe that they are only available for sale via Bandcamp.

Princess Freesia is Brighton-based Aussi Lija Rolavs who has featured her in recent weeks with several other Soulpersona remixes.

Alankara & Sheree Hicks [2023] - Earth Angel [Prana Records]

Another one that has been out a few weeks now is a soulful house/dance track from Alankara & Sheree Hicks with three mixes of "Earth Angel", all eight and a half minutes long!

The Flute Edit (featuring Hanz Litz presumably on flute) has a real Latin flavour with the Beats mix having a bit more of an Afro feel with congas and bongos thrown in the mix.

Alankara (Hugo Zwarts) is a Dutch Soulful House & Lounge DJ/Producer.

Andrea Sheree Hicks has been around since the 90s lending her vocals to the likes of C+C Music Factory and writing/arranging for Heavy D, Blackstreet, Terry Dexter and others. She released her debut album "Love Language" in 2016.
