Gloria Scott [2022] - All Of The Time, You're On My Mind [Acid Jazz]

A single "All Of The Time, You're On My Mind" is pre-released today from a forthcoming album by Gloria Scott, "So Wonderful" due on 30 Sep 2022.

Gloria Scott's music has been admired for decades on the rare soul scene. She released just one album "What Am I Gonna Do" in 1974 produced by Barry White. It spawned a couple of singles ("What Am I Gonna Do" and "Just As Long As We're Together (In My Life There Will Never Be Another)") followed by a third and the most sought after, issued only in Australia on 7", "(A Case Of) Too Much Lovemakin'" which was covered by Lisa Stansfield many years later in 1993 on "So Natural" and Paprika Soul had a stab at it in 2018. I think from recollection it was also recorded around 2000 by Kim Weston but I think it was a white label 'bootleg' taken from a compilation CD that Ian Levine was behind. All above versions were posted in Nov 2020.

The new single is one of three on the forthcoming album that is from the period she was working with Barry White that were never released.

She recorded her first single in 1964 as Gloria Scott & The Tonettes "I Taught Him" on Warner Bros. which is a rockin' R&B tune written and produced by Sly Stewart (Sly & The Family Stone).  It failed to chart and later she became an one of The Ikettes, before meeting Barry White who signed her on a 7 year contract, but owing to his own career taking off, and being signed to a start up label, which Casablanca was at the time, Scott was neglected.

The album has been reissued multiple times on both vinyl and CD such is it's popularity.

She recorded a second album with H. B. Barnum but it was not released and she later became a background singer for Mary Wilson (Supremes).

In more recent times Gloria has become a regular performer at The Baltic Soul Weekender in Germany each summer.

Both her 1974 singles entered R&B chart with the first reaching #74 and second "Just As Long As We're Together (In My Life There Will Never Be Another)" getting to #14 which garnered it an appearance on Soul Train but only with dancers featured in video below not a live appearance. In typical Barry White fashion, both flip sides were instrumentals of the A sides.

A few weeks ago (3 Jun) she released a cover of Joe Smooth's  "Promised Land" which will be on the new album.

Roger Williams [2022-07-20] - The Soulsorts Michael Henderson Retrospective

Well they say 'great minds think alike' (and also 'fools never differ!') and Roger Williams has just sent a 3 hour podcast tribute to Michael Henderson and a SoulStrutter tribute was posted earlier today. Ours was 'thrown together' in haste, whilst Roger's, to use Dave Lee's phrase, is 'produced with love'!

He writes:

"An artist who’s played a major part in the soundtrack to my life, and his passing has made me very sad, I can think of two other artists which have affected me previously when they’ve passed, Gerald Levert and George Duke, and the great Michael Henderson who passed on 19th July 2022 at the age of 71 is another one, it's had me trawling his album collection today and this is a Soulsorts retrospect of all his tracks which are my personal favourites, the man was definitely one of the all time greats in my book, rest well in soulful heaven big man x

Esther Phillips [1975] - What A Diff'rence A Day Makes [Kudu #KU-925 F]

I couldn't resist the title of this song as we were sweltering in 39C heat here yesterday and today it's a more bearable 22C. Thankfully, touch wood, the desktop is holding up as the laptop was unbearably slow making creating posts absolute purgatory!

I did have a much better laptop and that gave up the ghost only a couple of weeks ago with the graphics chip overheating (unrepairable!). With that, and two hard drive failures only last week, and the desktop playing up in the last few days, I'm beginning to think I must be in the middle of the 'twilight zone'!

Anyway, What A Diff'rence A Day Makes! ... is a jazz song written in 1934 by Mexican songwriter María Grever with the title "Cuando vuelva a tu lado" ("When I Return to Your Side")  and recorded by many including Dinah Washington. An update by Esther Phillips was one of those new releases that got played on the Northern Soul scene back in 1975 from where the term Modern Soul was coined.

Prolific Official [2022] - Me [Self Released] (Full EP)

Prolific Official is from East London who classifies her music as  Neo soul/Jazz with elements of Lo-fi Hip hop. She has released a debut four track EP "Me" on 18 Jul 2022.

The opening track "Sleepless Night" features rap from KWEST and is yet another that uses 'that' sample and was released as a single on 7 May 2021. "Fool" was also released as her debut single 25 Sep 2018 even though she states that "Sleepless Nights" is her debut single, in fact there is another in between that's also not on the EP, "Kissing On Your Tattoos", which is included in the 15 minute live video session included below.

R.I.P. Michael Henderson (7 Jul 1951 - 19 Jul 2022)

Bassist, singer/songwriter, producer and arranger Michael Henderson has died. He was admitted to hospital two weeks ago shortly after his 71st birthday but never recovered. The news was announced on his facebook page
He was born in Yazoo City, MS, and moved to Detroit in the 60s to work as a session musician playing bass as a 13 year old with The Fantastic Four, Detroit Emeralds, Billy Preston and some Motown acts in the mid sixties. He got his big break after he was spotted by Stevie Wonder who invited him to tour with him. This in turn led to him featuring on ten of Miles Davis' 70s fusion albums. After working with Davis for seven years he started his solo career debuting with "Solid" which contained "Valentine Love" which he later recorded with Jean Carn.

He had a relatively short solo recording career releasing eight albums (seven on Buddah and his final one on EMI-America) between 1976-86 before he retired. He also featured on several Norman Connors albums and did some duets with Phyllis Hyman.

The list of artists he recorded and/or toured with include Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Miles Davis, Norman Connors, The Dramatics, Johnnie Taylor, Bobby Womack, Mtume and many others.

He achieved seventeen R&B chart entries (all included in playlist below) with only "Take Me I'm Yours" reaching the Hot 100 at #88 and two others bubbled under at 101 and 103.

Below are two tribute playlists, the first consists of all his A sides which entered US R&B chart and the second cherry picked from his albums which are mainly album only tracks but one or two (e.g."Riding" and "Come To Me") may have appeared as B sides.

UPDATE: Roger Williams has also done a tribute with a 3 hour podcast HERE

Baegod & XL Middleton [2022] - You Not Me (Remix) [Bedroomtrap]

A new single from Baegod & XL Middleton "You Not Me (Remix)" released on 18 Jul 2020 is an 80s throwback. God forbid we start seeing the re-emergence of 'The Mullet'!

XL Middleton was presumably brought in to do the remix for the song originally released almost exactly a tear ago on 23 Jul 2021 (included below for comparison).

Baegod (aka Maryann Hunter) is from Sacramento, CA, and set up her label with producer Sbcve in 2013.
