R.I.P. - Lillian Walker (The Exciters) (5 Mar 1944 - 5 Feb 2023)

Lillian Walker-Moss died on 5 Feb 2023 from a rare form of cancer, angiosarcoma, aged 78. She was a member of the early 60's group The Exciters, perhaps best known for their #4 Hot 100 hit "Tell Him".
The group was formed in Jamaica, Queens, NYC, as The Masterettes by Lillian and high school friends Brenda Reid, Carol Johnson and Sylvia Wilbur. Wilber left soon afterwards and was replaced initially by Penny Carter and then by Herb Rooney. As The Masterettes they released just one single in 1961 "Never Ever" / "Follow The Leader" on a small Brooklyn based label Le Sage. There was already a male group on the label called The Masters of which Herb Rooney was a member. The group had passed the girls house and heard them singing and that is how they became The Masterettes and recorded on Le Sage. They used to do shows with The Masters, opening for them. Rooney wrote the songs they recorded with Cecil Bowen who appears on all releases, so I would guess that he owned the label. After the release of the first single they started doing bigger shows on the same bill as groups like Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Shirelles and The Imperials.

They got the opportunity of auditioning for Leiber and Stoller and their next single was "Tell Him" as The Exciters in Oct 1962 on United Artists which rose to #5 R&B and #4 Hot 100. The song, written by Bert Russell (aka Bert Berns), was not the original as it had been recorded earlier as "Tell Her" by Gil Hamilton (aka Johnny Thunder) on Capitol in May 1962. It was also a later hit in the UK for Billie Davis in 1963 and has been covered many times by different artists.

The success of "Tell Him" resulted in an album of the same name which was heard by The Beatles who invited the group to join them on a six week US tour in 1964. At this time there was still segregation in the south and at one show at Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, FL, they were told that the couldn't perform but the The Beatles told the management that it was a package deal and if The Exciters weren't allowed to perform then neither would The Beatles. Needless to say there was a quick about turn in attitude!

However, they were not successful in following up their hit and achieved only four more minor R&B hits, three in the 60s and one in 1978. The flip side of their last 60s hit "Blowing Up My Mind" was picked up on by the Northern Soul scene. Their second minor hit, believe it or not, was "Do-Wah-Diddy" which was covered a few months later by Manfred Mann who had a UK #1 pop hit with it the same year and it stayed on the chart for fourteen weeks. Go figure as it reached only #78 R&B for The Exciters.

Lillian left the group in the early 70s and attended college and gained a masters degree in counselling in which she excelled in for 30 years. She returned to singing with encouragement from her daughter and sang with a group called The Super Girls. Ronnie Pace and Skip McPhee were drafted in to replace Walker and Johnson but the group split up not long afterwards in 1974.

The Exciters recorded six albums in total, four in which Walker was involved up to 1971, and around twenty singles.

Brenda Reid and Herb Rooney were married from 1964 until the mid 80s. Rooney died in the early 90s. Their son Cory Rooney is a successful producer who has worked with Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez, Michael Jackson and Destiny's Child. Carol Johnson died in 2007 aged 62.

Herb Rooney hooked up with Ian Levine and recorded "Reaching for the Best" which, if not his first Northern Soul tailor made recording then, certainly one of his earliest. It was a UK Top 40 pop hit reaching #31 in 1975. He also recorded several other songs with them (a cover of Eddie Parker's' "Love You Baby" and Sandi Sheldon's "You're Gonna Make Me Love You", "Suffering" and "Swallow Your Pride"). All released on 21st Century Fox and tagged onto the end of the playlist below even though Lillian Walker was not involved as the group was only a duo of Reid and Rooney at this time. (I think one or two of them on Spotify may be later re-recordings)

Alexis Evans [2023] - Yours Truly [Record Kicks] (Full Album)

We featured the second single, "Do Something", from Anglo-French blue-eyed soul man Alexis Evans', then forthcoming, album "Truly Yours", in Dec '22. The album was released last Friday (3 Feb '23). The first single "Mister Right On Time" was released the previous month (11 Nov) which we suggested had a bit of a Hall & Oates feel about it. The third single "Let Them Loose" was released on 20 Jan '23. You may recall his storming, neo Northern Soul, debut single "I Made A Deal With Yourself" from Jan 2019.

"Truly Yours" will be the third album for the Bordeaux based artist following "Girl Bait" (2016) and "I've Come A Long Way" (2019) which was awarded 'Soul album of The Year' by Rolling Stone France.

The album consists of twelve tracks mixing classic 60's & 70's soul music with more contemporary influences such as hip hop beats, jazz, reggae, and Caribbean sounds. The choice cuts on a first listen are "Another Round For Me", "Close To Me" and "It Matters To Me".

Evans inherited his love of music and learnt to play guitar from his musician father and draws inspiration from the likes Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke to David Bowie. He was a member of Jumpin' to the Westside aged 17 who released an album "No Kidding" in 2011 and were awarded the "Cognac Blues Passion" prize which earned them an appearance at the "International Blues Challenge" in Memphis, TN.

Ebony Riley [2023] - ebony [Interscope Records] (Full Album)

The debut album from Ebony Riley, "ebony", is one we've been sitting on for a few days as to these ears it's basically a one-track album but that track "Open" is rather good. The remaining tracks are all R&B flava'd and, apart from one, are all explicit. However, there appears to be a clean edition available.

The intro to the second track, "Draws", samples Evelyn King's "Love Come Down" and the ballad "Cry" has grown on me after a few plays.

Ebony Riley is from Detroit and has been a model for nine years featuring Vogue, Paris, and Harperss Bazar. She has been creating music for the last four under the moniker Riley Montana.

Paul Williams [2023] - Daisy Dukes [Self Released]

Hot blooded males of a certain age will relate Daisy Duke to actress Catherine Bach who starred in the US TV series The Dukes Of Hazard from 1979-85. The term is now used as slang to describe the short cut-off jeans she used to sport.

It is also the title of a new single by Paul Williams which has a southern soul/R&B feel.

TLC [2023] - Wat3rfalls (TLC Version) [LaFace] (Full EP)

I'm not quite sure why specifically now, but three of the four Hot 100 #1 hits from the 90s by TLC ("No Scrubs" ('94), "Waterfalls" ('95) and "Creep" ('99)) have been bundled together for a new three track EP "Wat3rfalls", released on 31 Jan '23. They are subtitled 'TLC Version' so presumably they are new mixes.

They had a further #1 hit with "Unpretty" in 1999 and achieved a total of 9 Top 10 Hot 100 hits between 1991-99 and their third album "FanMail" was also a #1 hit selling over 10m copies worldwide. Their four studio albums are all platinum sellers achieving over 30m sales.

The group was formed as a trio of Tionne Watkins, Lisa Lopes and  Crystal Jones in Atlanta, GA, in 1990 as "2nd Nature" and later re-named to TLC (the initials of their first names) and auditioned for Babyface and L.A. Reid's LaFace. Jones was replaced by Rozonda Thomas in 1991 and, to maintain the TLC acronym, they adopted the nicknames Tionne 'T-Boz' Watkins, Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes and Rozonda 'Chilli' Thomas. Lopes was killed in a car crash in Apr 2002 aged 30.

"Rise" features Joanna Majoko and will be the fourth single pre-released from the album. From the samples listened to, the previous three singles are jazz instrumentals.

She released her debut album "Hawk Eyes" in Nov in 2018.

Howard Rice [2023] - Silent Symphony [Self Released]

A self-written single titled "Silent Symphony" from Howard Rice was released on 19 Jan which has been sitting in the to-do list for a week or two. We can find no information about Howard Rice except that it looks like it's only his second single having released "I Really Want You" in Aug 2019 with Latia Union. He also featured on a gospel album "Gospel Duets With Friends & Family" with, presumably, his brother Nat Rice, in 2016.

This one should appeal to those who prefer/appreciate old school soul. A touch of Johnnie Taylor about this one?
