2022 Albums of the Year ... so far

With the first half of 2022 now past, and we're well into August, I thought it was about time to do a recap of the best albums of the year so far. I guess many may have been forgotten or overlooked so now's the time to refresh your memories of them as there are links to the original posts if you would like to revisit them.

If you think there is an album I've missed then leave a comment. NOTE that this isn't a list of all albums released, only those I consider to have been the best or most popular and excludes compilations, covers and reissues i.e. original material only. There have been 46 identified so far.

On average there's been six to eight good albums each month but July was pretty sparse and so was March. August is looking on track with three already and we're not half way through the month yet.

Golden O'Hara-Polo [2022] - What We Doin' [Self Released]

From song writing credits I would deduce that Golden O'Hara-Polo is DeMario McMurray and she is from Detroit. She has released her third single "What We Doin'" today following two others from Feb this year which are both included on a six track EP "Elusive" released in May.

Kenny Hamber [2022] - Used Ta Be My Girl [Quantize #QTZ330]

This cover of The O'Jays' 1978 #1 R&B chart hit "Used Ta Be My Girl" (which was their second biggest hit in UK after "Love Train") has been out for over a month since 1 Jul 2022. It's by Kenny Hamber who has been known to followers of Northern Soul for decades for his 60s Arctic recordings especially "Anything You Want" (which was written by Kenny Gamble and has elements which remind me of Darrell Banks "Open The Door to My Heart" in places).

A couple of previously unreleased Arctic recordings (remained in the can because the label went bust before they could be released) "I Can Feel That You Love Me" / "Hey Girl" were unearthed by Kenny himself and released on vinyl on a look-a-like Arctic label in 2010. The  flip ("Hey Girl") was a Goffin & King song first recorded by Freddie Scott on Colpix in 1963 which reached #10 on both R&B chart and Hot 100. In fact the song has been recorded many, many times, SecondHandSongs lists 79 versions. The UK TV star Kenny Lynch was one of the first to cover it in 1963 and others include The Righteous Brothers, Timi Yuro, The Temptations and a fair number of other soul artists including the very recently deceased Nichelle Nicols as a previously unrelease bonus track on a 2004 reissue of her 1967 "Down To Earth" album. You  don't need me to list them all as you can check out the link yourself if interested.

Kenny is from Baltimore and will be 79 in a month's time and debuted in 1960 on a single "Do The Hully Gully" / "Tears In Your Eyes" when he would have been around 17/18 years old. It was released on Spar which was a Baltimore label named after local DJ Bill 'Sparky' Mellon not the Nashville label that Herbert Hunter's Northern Soul classic "I Was Born To Love You" was released. The Spar recording was very poor so it was re-recorded using different musicians (including King Curtis on Sax and Jimmy Bailey (aka J.R. Bailey)) at a NY studio and released on Zenette, named after Sparky's daughter.

He released around five singles in the 60s, the aforementioned Spar/Zanette single, a dance craze record on De Jac ("Show Me Your Monkey" / "Time") in 1964, two on Arctic, the one above and the other consisted of two covers of The Valentino's (Bobby Womack) "Looking For A Love" and Otis Redding "These Arms Of Mine", and his last in 1969 "Camel Walk" on Mean which is so rare that Kenny doesn't even own a copy. His contract with Arctic was for 3 records and when it went bust his contract was passed to Jesse James to record his third single which is the only (known) recording on the label.

It wasn't until 1986 that he released his next solo single, a version of Eddie Floyd's "Never Found A Girl" on 12" by Million Dollar Entertainment and there is also a Polydor 12" promo/test pressing listed for it. It also appeared on 7" on PES based in Roswell, GA, which appears to have been one of only two releases on the 'dubious' looking label as it has written on the label 'Royalties To Be Paid Upon Presentation Of A Legal Claim' .. so 'winging' it and definitely a bootleg?

In between times, in the 70s, he was a member of The Hitchhikers who released a self-titled album on ABC in 1976 from which six tracks were released over three singles. History repeated itself for Kenny as ABC Paramount were in financial difficulties and wouldn't get behind the releases.

In 1996 he self-released a CD album "R&B Time" and 2006 "In A Romantic Mood" and subsequently a  few 'best of' CDs and a gospel CD which are available from his website.

I also noticed on his website that he has a book soon to be available titled after his first single  "Tears In Your Eyes" The Kenny Hamber Story - Life & Career Of A Soul Singer which looks like it could be an interesting read. It states that it will be available with on-line retailers soon and dare I say it ... it will soon be Christmas!

His latest single comes in several flavours so take your pick:
DJ Spen & Michele Chiavarini Extended Disco Mix
DJ Fella Soulful House Mix
DJ Spen & Michele Chiavarini Discofied Dub
DJ Fella Raw House Mix
DJ Fella & DJ Spen’s Ol’ Skool B More Klub Mix

Sharon Rae North [2022] - Silhouette [Self Released] (Full Album)

The latest album "Silhouette" by Sharon Rae North has been a long time in the making for this Billboard charting artist. With Chris 'Big Dog' Davis she recorded and dropped the single "Moments", featuring jazz saxophonist Marion Meadows, in 2019 with the full intention of finishing the EP by 2020. But then COVID hit and the world stopped and the project didn't start up again until early 2021. She did some writing, 'virtual' recording sessions, and was preparing for another EP. Then, in stepped Paul Brown who convinced her to do a 10-song album and put his stamp on two tunes.

Another two tracks have subsequently been released as singles, "We Should Be In Love (Silhouette)" (31 Dec 2021) and the current single "Heart Of Mine" (29 Jul 2022).

The album is currently only available on (signed) CD direct from the Sharon Rae North Website and is due digitally on DSPs on 12 Aug 2022. It includes a cover of Brenda Russell's 1988 classic "Piano In The Dark" taken from her "Get Here" album, the title track later covered by Oleta Adams in 1990 who had a bigger hit with it.

Sharon is an independent smooth jazz artist originally from Youngstown, OH, but now residing in Northern Virginia. Her latest album will be her third since her first "The Way You Make Feel" from 2007, followed by "Gee Baby" in 2012. She also has a five track EP "Sincerely Yours" (2016) along with the three singles above.

UPDATE Full album now released and posted HERE.

R.I.P. Lamont Dozier (16 Jun 1941 - 8 Aug 2022)

On a day when the death of Dame Olivia Newton-John is dominating the mainstream news, an absolute legend of soul music has also died aged 81. The great Lamont Dozier's death has been announced by his son, Lamont Dozier Jr., on Instagram.

Probably best know as part of the Motown hit song writing machine Holland, Dozier, Holland with Eddie & Brian Holland but his later 70s solo output is revered by modern soul fans.
I've only just learned of his demise and am still reeling from the death last Thursday of The Impressions' Sam Goodman and have been in the process of compiling a playlist as an honorable tribute for him, so will keep this brief as there is also so much Lamont Dozier material to go through for a proper tribute.

The H-D-H partnership was formed in 1962 and they scored three consecutive hits in 1963 with Martha & The Vandellas "Come and Get These Memories", "Heatwave" and "Quicksand". They then wrote for The Supremes with a run of ten consecutive hits starting with "Where Did Our Love Go" with seven of them topping the Billboard Hot 100. The list of hits is endless with twelve Billboard #1s (10 with The Supremes and 2 with Four Tops) and three #1s in the UK (which included a non Motown recording by Freda Payne on Invictus with "Band Of Gold"). It would possibly be easier listing the Motown 60s hits that they didn't write! As an inkling of his prowess he has 1,575 credits listed on Discogs.

The trio left Motown in 1968 following a royalties dispute to form their own labels Invictus and Hot Wax which included acts such as  Freda Payne, Chairmen Of The Board, 8th Day, Elouise Laws.  Dozier left in 1973 to focus on a solo career and released his debut solo album "Out Here On My Own" on ABC the same year with the title track being released as a single paired with "Fish Ain't Bitin'". His first solo single after a ten year hiatus from recording was the superb "Trying To Hold On To My Woman" coupled with the equally good "We Don't Want Nobody To Come Between Us" which was his most successful single chart-wise reaching #4 R&B and #15 hot 100.
Sadly the only dent he made on the UK pop chart as an artist was as Holland-Dozier in 1972 with "Why Can't We Be Lovers" which reached #29.

It may not be common knowledge but he recorded a handful of singles in the very early 60s under the name Lamont Anthony, the first two on the fledgling Motown label Anna run by Berry Gordy's elder sisters Gwen and Anna Gordy (who later married Marvin Gaye) and another on Check-Mate. His first as Lamont Dozier was on another Motown imprint Mel-o-dy in 1962.

I had tickets to see him a few years two ago as he was visiting the UK but the tour had to be cancelled owing to ill health and I did wonder then if he would ever return as he would have been around 78/79 then.

Gary Van Den Bussche has dedicated his two hour lunchtime show on Starpoint Radio to the music of Lamont Dozier and he has kindly sent a podcast of the show to post as a tribute. An excellent and comprehensive job he has done too with very little notice, not only covering his solo output but also the many contributions he has made for various artists! A far better tribute than I would have been able to put together with the limited amount of his material available on Spotify. As they say in the states 'Good Job' Gary!

Garnett Boldin [2022] - Improve v Kansas City Express [1975] - This Is The Place

Garnett Boldin from Richmond, VA, released his sophomore album "Find The Message" on 22 Jul 2022. He debuted in May 2016 with an album "Know Your Soul" and as far as I can tell has only released one single "Ode To Richmond" in 2020 (which is included on the album).

The album is full of contemporary/urban explicit tracks except the two interludes. The standout track is "Improve" which has had a few radio plays and I'm surprised no one has mentioned the sample used (apart from DJ Kool Keith who has it programmed for his next slow jams show). It's from Kansas City Express' only outing on American Artists from 1975 "This Is The Place". It has been reissued a couple of times on vinyl since in 2012 by Friends Of Sound (but going by a review commenting on the poor sound quality of the pressing it may be a misnomer!) and in 2019 on Athens Of The North imprint Oceans Of Tears.

They started out in 1964 as a 16-piece group named The Fabulous Elites. In 1972 they downsized to 7 members renaming themselves Kansas City Express which included three Bedell brothers Ernie, Larry and Joe. Their one and only single (written by Joe Bendell) was released in 1975 and they were later signed to Stax but in a cruel twist of fate the label went bankrupt within a few months. They disbanded in 1977 but Larry, at least, continues to perform to this day.
