LaShawn D. Gary feat. Penny Wells [2024] - Everything You're Looking For [LNC Music]

Emmy award-winning producer, composer, smooth jazz artist, and pianist LaShawn D. Garry has a new single, "Everything You're Looking For", which features the vocals of Penny Wells.

LaSahwn is from Detroit and is a music educator currently teaching music with Southfield Public Schools. He has worked with many artists in the soul/jazz world such as Patti Austin, Greg Phillinganes, L.J. Reynolds (Dramatics), Howard Hewett, Keith Washington, Yolanda Adams, Michael J. Powell (Anita Baker) and  Paul Riser.

He released is own debut album, "Love, Peace, and Praise" in 2015.

Ms Wells is a fellow Detroiter who featured here with her last single in Oct '22, the superb "I Wanna Be More (You Are)" which was our SoulStrutter Selection of the Week on week of release in 2022. Do yourself a favour and give it another listen, but not until you've heard her on the new single.

Jeryl Bright [2024] - Someday We'll All Be Free [Bizcuit Records]

A cover of Donny Hathaway's civil rights anthem "Someday We'll All Be Free" by former Brainstorm and Cameo vocalist/trombonist Jeryl Bright.

Bright, along with two other Cameo members, bassist Aaron Mills and keyboardist Tommy 'T.C.' Campbell, formed MCB (Mills, Campbell, Bright) and released one self-titled, album and a single on Epic in 1983 before returning to the group.

Although the song was later adopted by the civil rights movement, the lyric, written by Edward Howard, was actually about Hathaway's state of mind as he had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia when the song was written. Hathaway would tragically take his own life in Jan 1979 falling from the 15th floor of a New York city hotel room.

Whilst the song was released as a single, it was only as a B side to "Love, Love, Love" (written by J.R. Bailey and Ken Williams), which reached #44 on Hot 100 in Jun 1973 and peaked at #16 R&B. 

The song has been covered countless times by many named artists such as Bobby Womack,  Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, Teena Marie, George Benson. Gregory Porter to name but a few and is said to have brought Hathaway to tears when he listened to the final cut.

Jay Avion [2024] - Celebrate [Savannah Street Music]

Hot on the heels of Krishawna's new single, "I Told Ya", here's another from the Savannah Street Music stables co-written with Ben Obi released by Jay Avion (Jarrod Anderson).

He released a debut single "Ex's Favourites Love Song" back in 2017 which featured Krishawna in the video (included below).

His latest single "Celebrate" has a southern soul / steppers feel, dare we say it, in the R. Kelly mould of "Step In The Name Of Love".

Myles Sanko [2024] - Peace Of Mind [213 Music]

On 2 Feb Myles Sanko released the first single, "Dream Chaser" from his sixth album "Let It Unfold" which is not due until 4 Oct. The second single, "Peace Of Mind", is released a month later.

London based, Ghana born of French origin, Sanko moved to Cambridge in the 90s after the Ghanaian political uprising. After touring with artists such as Gregory Porter, Billy Wooten, Martha High, Ben L'Oncle Soul and Ben Lambin (Notalgia 77), he self-released his debut album "Born In Black & White" in 2013.

His next four albums "Forever Dreaming" (2014), "Just Being Me" (2016), "Memories Of Love" (2021) and "Live at Philharmonie Luxembourg" (2023) were licensed to Hamburg's Légère Recordings.

Charlotta Kerbs & The Strays [2024] - Bloom In Love [Jolly Good Music]

Charlotta Kerbs & The Strays  is a Helsini based duo consisting of Finish singer-songwriter Charlotta Kerbs and Las Vegas based bassist Darrell Craig Harris who has toured Billy Preston, Gary Puckett, Frankie Avalon amongst many others. 

They released a debut six track EP "Muscle Shoals Sessions" in Mar '23, recorded at Fame Studios, AL, which, as the title suggests, consists on six southern soul style songs.

Their new single "Bloom In Love", whilst contemporary also has a retro feel.
