The World's Rarest Soul Record Pt. 3 - For Sale Again!

Well the saga continues! After buying one of only two known copies of Frank Wilson's "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)" on Soul S-35109 (a white label test pressing has subsequently turned up making three known copies on vinyl) in Aug 2020, the buyer Lee Jeffries has put it up on his Sonic Wax website for a set sale of a staggering £150,000. He, allegedly, paid £100,000 for it, so 'only' a 50% mark up in under four years! Will anyone bite?

We originally posted about the record and it's history in Sep 2009 (which has now received 10,245 views) when Edinburgh DJ Kenny Burrell auctioned his copy via John Manship Records (which he had bought for £15,000 in 1999 from record dealer Tim Brown) to an unnamed buyer for almost £26,000. In Aug 2020 we posted an update when Lee Jeffries bought that copy for what was said to be £100,000.

It is most definitely now out of most people's league at that sort of price and only the very rich (and perhaps stupid?) are able to afford it but no doubt 'someone' will buy it for the 'kudos'.

Brenzy & Patrick Hizon [2024] - Waiting [PH Records]

Virginia born, L.A. based, Brenzy (Emily Brennan) collaborates with SoCal songwriter/producer Patrick Hizon on her latest single, a breezy pop/blue-eyed soul song called "Waiting".

Brenzy's been releasing her music since 2019 and has a dozen singles and an EP to her name. We had a quick skim through her earlier material and recommend the soulful ballad "Love Me" from 2021.

Kadix [2024] - Here I Was Thinking [Self Released]

More jazz flavoured neo soul from Kadix with his latest offering "Here I Was Thinking".

Song writing credits are to a Kaden James and we found an Amsterdam producer with that name but his music tends to be House music  and remixes so probably not the same guy unless this is an alias he uses for other kinds of music?

Home Frango [2024] - Come Again / Your Love [Tru Thoughts]

A double sided debut single released today from those Tru Thoughts guys down in Brighton by Home Frango. They are duo Fletcher Jarvis (keyboards, drums and producer) based in Portugal and bassist, guitarist, and producer Leo Geller from Norway who met in London.

The two songs are a taster from their upcoming EP "Fresh And Tender" due on 13 Jun.

"Come Again" captures the essence of reconnecting with one's inner child whilst "Your Love" gently explores the emotions surrounding the end of a relationship and has a funky driving bassline and is our choice from the two.

ASKAÏ [2024] - Don't tell me [Self Released]

A bit of a mystery artist is ASKAÏ (or As Kaï) who released her second single of the year "Don't tell me" after five since her first in 2021.

All songs are credited to a Sanata Soumahoro, whom we assume is the artist and French, but can find nothing about her.

Her first single of the year, "Rude" (22 Jan), is also rather pleasant so have included a video for it below which is cut short so also include it from Spotify.

Vira Milton [2024] - Shere Khan (22:00) [Liar Records]

Emerging Scandinavian talent Vira Milton (Vira Nyqvist), from Stockholm, has released what appears to be only her second single. The only other we could find was "Liar" released in Sep '21.

The new single is a self-written song, "Shere Khan (22:00)", which is a cut down version of a song she recorded live and posted on her YouTube channel in Jun '23.

It's a jazzy neo soul song from the artist who states that she is inspired by Billie Holiday and Amy Winehouse.

The Mint 400 [2024] - Northern [TalkingHead TV Recordings] (Full Album)

If you hadn't deduced it already from the title, "Northern", of the debut album by The Mint 400, then from the opening track, "Unless Your Name Is Love (You Can't Come In)", (which is a clone of Rita & The Tiaras 1967 Dore single "Gone With the Wind Is My Love) you know that it's tailor made Northern Soul. To be fair it's a pretty good 'version' which uses a similar (but re-recorded) backing with different lyrics. This track was released as a single on 16 Apr.

"Gimme Some More" is based on The M.V.P.'s Turning My Heartbeat Up" (Buddah 1971), "Rescue" is based on Shirley Ellis' "Soul Time" (Columbia 1966) and "So Bad" on Shane Martin's "I Need You" (Epic 1968).

We won't bore you by name dropping each track (cheat sheet below) but most/all seem to be based on originals that we're sure you can probably figure out yourself if you have any interest in Northern Soul.

Although many of the songs appear to be derived from Northern Soul classics they all have a new modern/contemporary twist with different lyrics creating a new song with an authentic sound and not synthetic as is often the case with many of these types of recordings. Purists may roll their eyes but we don't mind admitting that we like it as it sounds refreshing. So many of these Northern Soul tailor mades disappoint as they don't quite capture the authentic sound. We've heard far far worse 'originals' played on the scene for the sake of 'rarity' and 'exclusivity'. This of course won't be touched by them unless or until it's released on the sacred vinyl in any case!

The musician behind the album is Manchester veteran Paul Ashley Wheatcroft who started out on the Manchester 'industrial funk' scene in a band called Workforce in 1982. In 1989 he was half of Ashley & Jackson with Steve Cobby who toured with Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpet and Brand New Heavies and released one album and had a modest chart hit with "Solid Gold" in 1990 (#89 UK Pop chart). In 2007 he formed TalkingHead TV Recordings and in 2017 changed his name to Hakim Jamal (the name of the cousin of Malcolm X).

The vocalists are Rachel Maxann from Memphis and 21 yr old Fliss (Felicity) Mitchell who we think is from Gloucester.
