21st Century Soul - 2002 (The Best Of)

Artwork by Roger Williams
Continuing a series highlighting top tracks for each year throughout the 21st Century on a week by week basis, here's this weeks selections for 2002.

Previous Years

As with previous selections, you may know many of them but, hopefully, there will be a few surprises that you may have missed or forgotten about. The ones available on Spotify are included in playlist below those not are highlighted in red below.

Steve Aggasild is absent again as he has spent the last week in hospital, thankfully getting the all clear on Monday, so once again SoulStrutter has stepped in to fill the void. There is a monster playlist of 84 selections but, as this is my last day before an Easter vacation, there wasn't time to filter it.

The playlist is simply alphabetical by artist against each individual who selected them.

Aki Aleong [2023] - Giving Up On Love b/w Love Is Funny [Numero Group #NUM5710]

Another foray into the archives for Numero Group with this 1963 Vee Jay outing from, now 88 year old, Aki Aleong (Assing Leonard Gonsalves Aleong).

It appears to be his last of only a handful of singles between 1959-63 and has been a long time favourite on the Northern Soul scene gaining a reissue on Stardust in the mid 90s.

The song "Giving Up On Love" was recorded at Hollywood's Gold Star studios in May 1963 with The Wrecking Crew and The Blossoms, who included Darlene Love, on backing vocals.

It has been covered by others including Jerry Butler, also on Vee Jay in 1964 who had a #56 R&B hit with it, the UK's Sonny Childe and L.A.'s Thee Midniters in 1965. The Heptones also did a reggae version in the 80s.

I'm not sure why Numero Group have gone with a facsimile Pan World label as I can't find it listed for that label although Aleong did record a singe for the label in 1960 and the flip "Love Is Funny" was published by Pan World and was recorded by Hannibal on the label also in 1960.

Girlhood [2023] - Love, Surround Me In Everything I Do [AntiFragile Music]

Genre-bending, London-based, R&B duo Girlhood first came to prominence, having already released  five singles and an EP since 2016, in 2020 with their debut, eponymous, album.

They have since expanded from the original duo of Christian Pinchbeck and Tessa Cavanna and recruited a multitude of collaborators from songwriters to orchestral composers.

Their latest single is "Love, Surround Me In Everything I Do" written by Pinchbeck and Taura Lamb whose name we have come across previously featuring on a single "Lemon Sqeeezy" with edbl from April last year.

D.P.V. [2023] - The One For Me (Original Mix) [Pink Funk]

Another soulful house track that 'borrows' from a fairly well now 70s side by Eastside Connection who released "You're So Right For Me" on  L.A. based Rampart Records in 1978. It even got a UK issue on Creole.

D.P.V. has used it for "The One For Me" which was released on Friday (24 Mar '22). I assume D.P.V. is Eugen Muntean as he has taken writing credits for this on most of the releases.

VA [2023] - Wigan Casino Three Before Eight [Outta Sight #OS230923]

On 23 Sep 2023, the now legendary, Wigan Casino will celebrate 50 years since opening it's doors at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning of 23 Sep 1973. Inevitably there will be many different events celebrating the occasion with the 'official' one taking place over the weekend of 22-24 Sep at The Winter Gardens in Blackpool. The two main stay DJs were founder Russ Winstanley and Richard Searling who had a parting of the way many years ago and never the twain shall meet so Richard is organising the Blackpool event and no doubt Russ will be doing his own, although I'm not up to speed on them all.

Anyway, also inevitably, Outta Sight has just reissued the famous "Three Before Eight" on 7" vinyl. They were originally all featured on a single back in 1978 on RK Records and the sleeve artwork has been duplicated. They were issued again by Goldmine Soul Supply, not dated but probably late 90s around 96/97.

For the uninitiated, the all-nighters ran every Sat/Sun night for eight years until 1981 and these three songs were played at the end of every all-nighter by Russ Winstanley and signalled the end of the event. They were played in order of Jimmy Radcliffe "Long After Tonight Is All Over" (1965), Tobi Legend "Time Will Pass You By" (1968) and Dean Parrish "I'm On My Way" (1967). Fifty years on and Tobi Legend is still one on my all time favourites. I recall buying the first reissue of it on Eric which had a jump in it and spent ages carefully trying to stop it jumping and ended up with a hiss where I'd held the stylus down on it, the inexperience of youth! By the way, dear old Kylie Minogue is about the only one I know of who's tried to cover the song, on her 1994 self-titled album.

Included below is the last time they were heard at the Casino on the final all-nighter in 20 Sep 1981, although there were a few false ends much to the miff of some all-nighter goers but a joy to others as there were additional nights to be enjoyed.

I'm not quite sure who the target buyer is for this one as anyone involved in Northern Soul who collects records must surely already have these in some format (vinyl and/or CD) but perhaps it's aimed at a new, younger, Northern Soul devotee as I suppose they haven't been available on vinyl since the late 90s but are relatively cheap and easy to pick up if anyone wanted one!
