Evil Needle Feat. QUIN [2021] - Liquid Light [Self Released]

French German DJ/producer Evil Needle releases a new single "Liquid Light" ahead of a new album "L'Emprise‎" (due 5 Nov 2021) which features singer/songwriter QUIN (Bianca Leonor Quiñones) (22 Oct 2021).

I was going to state that it was right out of the Erykah Badu school of neo soul when it dawned on me that it samples the melody from her "Other Side Of The Game" from her debut album "Baduzim" 1996 (video included below).

Tony DeWayne [2021] - Midnight Soul [DGRP Bay Sound Records] (Full Album)

A superb jazz flavoured album "Midnight Soul" by Tony DeWayne was tipped to me by Roger Williams last week. The publishing date states 2016 and it was released digitally on 4 Jul 2021.

It's a bit of a mystery as from the sleeve photo I would guess his attire is from the 90s. There is an entry on Discogs for a Tony DeWayne aka Anthony Crosley / Diamond Crosley. He is credited as one of the musicians on Paul Tillman Smith's "A Beautiful Heart" album from 2017 but there are also credits for writing "Lovestruck 1980" on Con Funk Shun's "Spirit Of Love" album in 1980.

I also found the full album posted on YouTube by Ben Kova on 20 Jan 2020 who posted this:
"I found several hundred brand new/sealed CD's of this entire record from a storage unit in Vallejo, CA that I won from a storage unit auction website.  The unit was clearly Tony's (Dewayne Anthony Lee Johnson) as it had many of his personal items, awards/accolades, musical equipment, letters, photos, etc. The findings were very neat along with this great music he made.  I decided to upload this entire record for the rest of the world to enjoy. This album is called Midnight Soul from Mo Soul Records, not sure what year this record was produced and/or released. I imagine this was made in the early 90's.  If you happen to know any information about this record, or of Tony himself, feel free to reach out.

I have his birth certificate as well from the Vallejo, CA General Hospital that reads his birth given is Dewayne Anthony Lee Johnson and he was born to De Lois Harvey on January 20, 1972.!"

I had a little dig around BMI and it appears he used different writing aliases as "Lovestruck 1980" is credited to T. Crossley and Michael Cooper. There are three songs credited to Anthony Dewayne Crossley, two of them also written with Con Funk Shun's Michael Cooper who was also born in Vallejo, CA, (Bay Area) so I assume they must have been friends and therefore also not surprising that he has been involved with Paul Tillman Smith.

Wow .. I just discovered this .. surely it can't be a 'coincidence', same name, same age, same location? He won a $289 million dollar lawsuit against Monsanto Co.(manufacturers of Roundup) in 2018 after  being diagnosed as terminally ill with non-Hodgkin lymphoma blamed on the use of chemical herbicides. There is also another report by The Guardian. The award has been appealed three times and has been reduced. There is plenty of other information about the case on the net.

Bloodstone [1972] - Never Let You Go [London #LON-1051 / 45-1051]

When you think on Bloodstone I guess most of us would automatically think of their first and biggest hit (and only hit in UK) "Natural High", but they did have another five R&B top 10 hits including the follow up "Never Let You Go" which was actually released as a promo before "Natural High" and then reissued after their hit in 1972. This particular  track, written by group member Harry Williams, sounds like it could have been written/recorded by Johnny Bristol.

They are from Kansas City, MI, and were formed in 1962 as The Sinceres who, after relocating to L.A., cut a 45 on Paul Gayten's Pzazz label in 1968 which is a bit of an in-demander for the sweet soul topside "Don't Waste My Time" and the Northern Soul stormer "Girl, I Love You" on the flip.

By 1971 they changed their name to Bloodstone and relocated to London and went on to have five R&B top 10 hits from thirteen entries.

In 1978 they signed to Motown and released one album "Don't Stop" from which "Just Wanna Get The Feel Of It" was the only single released which picked up spins on the UK modern soul scene.

Betty Wright [1993] - For Love Alone [Ms.B Records #4453]

A perhaps forgotten and overlooked track from Betty Wright's 1994 album "B-Attitudes". "For Love Alone" played today by Gary Van Den Bussche on his 'Lunchtime Sandwich' radio show on Starpoint Radio. He does have a tendency of unearthing some great forgotten tunes as well as playing up front releases. I believe that it was also released as a single in 1993 which may have been promo only CDS.

As it starts it sounds very like something Anita Baker could have recorded and, as Gary commented to me, early Anita Baker 'with attitude'!

If you're interested in learning more about Betty Wright I did a tribute feature for her last May (2020) just after she died and also a Full Discography.

Candace Woodson [2021] - An Interview with Gary Van Den Bussche on Starpoint Radio 26th Oct 2021

Just prior to her live UK appearances and the release of her new single "All I Need (Rob Hardt Mix)" on Friday (29 Oct 2021), Candace Woodson was interviewed by Gary Van Den Bussche (the Parkinson of soul) on his lunchtime Starpoint Radio show today.

During the interview Candace intimated that there would be some surprise additional shows to the two currently scheduled at The Pheasantry, Chelsea 9 Nov and Pizza Express, Birmingham 12 Nov.
