Eddie Smith [196?] - I Didn't Realize / One Hundred Years [Mellotone MW10007]

Now here's a treat and one that most are unlikely to have ever heard!  Not listed anywhere, although I did find a scan of it on a Japanese site soulrarity.

Written by D.L. Jefferson, produced by Nat Meadows for Jefferson Recording Co., Marie Music. Meadows was a Chicago songwriter and producer and owned the Sonic label which released around 30 45s, many of which were gospel.

A copy was auctioned by John Manship in Dec 2014 and sold for £1,788.

This is what John had to say:
"Let’s not make any bones about it. This is the RAREST USA Northern Soul 45 we have listed this year!

A Chicago endangered species of the highest order - debuting these pages and possibly (although records only go back 15 years) our first copy in memory. Today we are unashamedly delighted to be able to offer this RAREST OF THE RARE mid-tempo excellence in truly immaculate condition.

So go google, to verify this discs extreme elusiveness.

Then click the soundfile to immerse yourself in a finely crafted real-deal Soul that very few can boast of owning! A magnificent tune that will pleasure those of you into both Soulful Crossover and legitimate Northern Soul; as those horns echo the streets of the Windy City but also remind you of the truly great mid-tempo rarities like Chuck Holliday, George Lemons, George Hobson etc. The stand alone male artist ,who clings onto not one commercial note during an on-his-knees delivery bristling with street-corner qualities.

UNICORN RARE!

Deep Soul aficionados check out the heartbreaking flip side, again dressed in all the above qualities."

The only other record on Mellotone (Mello Tone) is the great Billy McGregor - It's My Turn Now / The Great Creation MW 1000 from 1968.  I'm not entirely sure it's the same label (as different label design), but I strongly suspect it is as it is also produced by Nat Meadows for Marie Music.  Eddie Smith Cat. No. is MW10007 - so I wonder if there's some other gems on the label still to be unearthed?

There was an earlier label with identical label design to Mello Tone called Mello Way co-written and produced by Nat Meadows which released Buster Benton - That's The Reason / Hole In My Head that got a release on Twinight in 1969.

Eddie Smith [196?] - I Didn't Realize [Mellotone MW10007]

Crossover

I would hazard a guess at release year 1968 given Billy McGregor came out that year.

The Ledgends - Discography

The Ledgends were a Chicago group which included Carl McPhan and Curtis McCormick (who were co-writers on Gotta Let You Go and Something To Remember You By) and Lamar Greer, Carsie Lee Dees and Lenny O'Dell. They released 3 45s all in 1970.  Their first 45 was issued twice on Locket and Commonwealth United.
Their sides were produced by established producers Johnny Cameron and Clarence Johnson.

Carl McPhan stated the following in a YouTube comment
"Thank you for your comment I totally agree it's sad to know at that time there were powers that literally kept true talent from being exposed! There are three other "The Legends " records like this called "something to remember you by" Gotta let you go" and " Fear Not" also here on you tube on Red Balloon Records I don't know where Locket Record version came from. Thank you and enjoy."
This is contrary to the opinion on SoulSource which claims that the Locket issue was the original local release which was then distributed nationally on Commonwealth United.  If Locket was the first local release surely he would remember?  This was the only release on the label.

Discography

1970 - Gotta Let Go / Fear Not [Commonwealth United C-3014]
1970 - Gotta Let Go / Fear Not [Locket L 756]
1970 - Something To Remember You By / Gotta Let Go [Red Balloon RB-01]
1970 - A Fool For You / Fear Not [Red Balloon RB-03]

As you can see they only actually recorded 4 sides Gotta Let Go, Fear Not, Something To Remember You By and A Fool For You.

Curtis McCormick wrote a few other songs which were recorded by Billy Stewart - What Have I Done, The Lovelites who recorded a version of Gotta Let You Go, Who You Gonna Hurt Now and I've Got Love, The Symphonics - When I Grow Old / Guilty (a storming NS tune), The Softiques - Bashful (I'm That Kinda Girl) / Two Kinds Of Boys, The Notations - Gonna Get Ready / Trying My Best To Find Her

The Ledgends [1970] - A Fool For You [Red Balloon RB-03]

Sweet soul group harmony

This was covered by The Jack Moves in 2010 and sampled by Heather Victoria - What I Need  in 2011, Ah-Na, AG & Enonymous - Love To Hate (Prod by Madlib) in 2012 and Madlib Love/Hate (Inst) in 2010 on Low Budget High Fi Music album.

Owing to different (simpler) label design to RB-01 above, some thought that this may be a bootleg (see SoulSource discussion) but general consensus is that it's legit.

It has never sold on Discogs and I can only find one on Popsike which sold for £218 in Nov 2007 so guess it must be pretty rare.

No label scan available.

Mobile Phone app to contact trace
The only realistic way out of lockdown is to contact trace, but first we must get the no. of new infections down.  Trails have started in Isle Of Wight for a mobile phone app.  It seems that a phone app is the solution to everything these days - a few points to note:

1/ Singapore has already tried it and there was only 20% take up.
2/ apparently it is only viable if there is a 60% of the population take up
2.1/ what percentage of UK population has a mobile phone? According to these stats 95% of UK households own a mobile phone but that does not mean 95% of total population as there are approx 30m household and a population of 67m.
2.2/ what percentage will install the app?
2.3/ how many will have the app running at all times?
2.4/ it requires bluetooth, so even if app running will phones run out of battery regularly?
2.5/ how open is it to hacking and malicious false positives?

Finally, I would imagine the most vulnerable (over 65s) are the least likely to a/ own a mobile phone and b/ be savvy enough to install and run the app at all times.

Here's a chart that proves the point i.e. only 15% of over 65s own a mobile phone (in 2015) and only 55% between 55-65.

Another report by Deloitte shows a figure of 88% in 2019 (60.3m) and yet another in May 2020 claims 82.9% (55.5m).  So basically it's somewhere between 80-95%.

So let's break that down:
60% population is 40.2m
assume 90%/83% of population own a mobile phone is 60.3m / 55.5m
This would mean that between 67% (40.2/60.3) and 72.4% (40.2/55.5) of all phone owners need to install and run the app to get 60% population coverage needed.

Don't get me wrong we need all tools available to combat the virus but I don't think this app alone is going to be the silver bullet.

It will be interesting to see the results of the trial.
