Whitney Houston [2023] - He Can Use Me [Arista]

It is no secret that Whitney Houston was not entirely happy with the way she was managed and being directed to the mass pop market. Her first love was gospel and a posthumous gospel album  "I Go To The Rock" is slotted for release on 24 Mar '23.

The album will include six previously unreleased tracks along with five songs taken from "The Preacher's Wife" OST (1996), one each from "The Bodyguard" OST (1992) and "Sparkle"  OST (2012) plus the title track from "I Look to You" (2009).

The first two singles are both previously unreleased. "Testimony" (which she recorded aged 17 in 1981) dropped on 9 Feb and is a traditional gospel 'stomp' and "He Can Use Me" was released on 24 Feb which has more 'soul appeal'.

The other four unreleased songs are "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (with CeCe Winans at VH1 Awards), "This Day" (VH1 Honors), "I Found a Wonderful Way", and "He/I Believe".

A documentary about Houston's love of gospel is also planned alongside the album which spans her first performance at a local church through to the release of the soundtrack for The Preacher's Wife album in 1996 that went on to become the best-selling collection of gospel music in history.

Houston released just seven solo studio albums between 1985 and 2009 (along with another seven OSTs) before her untimely and tragic death aged 48 in 2012.

Only last year Houston's life was depicted in the biopic "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" with a soundtrack to go with it.

Frank McComb & Walter Williams [2023] - Learn How To Love [Boobeescoot]

The latest single from Frank McComb is a collaborative one with original O'Jay Walter Williams who will be 80 later this year and is still in fine voice.

The single, "Learn How To Love", has been sent out for radio adds this Friday (17 Mar '23) but when it will be available for sale we have not been told.

Williams along with Eddie Levert are the only two remaining members of the original quintet which was reduced to a trio by the time they the joined Philadelphia International in 1971. The only other surviving original member is Bobby Massey who left the group in 1971. William Powell, who was the third member during the Philly heyday, died in 1977 and Bill Isles, who left the group with Massey in 1971, died in 2019.

J-SUMMA [2023] - Heaven and Home [Oufah Music]

The debut single from Jamaican singer/songwriter/guitarist Gawaine 'J-SUMMA' Campbell, "Heaven and Home", is 'proper' old school soul, so it's no big surprise to learn that he cites his influences as the likes on Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Bobby Womack and Curtis Mayfield as well as fellow Jamaicans Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff, so he is our kinda guy!

He started singing aged 7 and picked up the guitar at 19 and states that the first album he owned was The Mighty Clouds Of Joy and, when asked what song he would have wished he had written, he replies Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" but that honour, of course, goes to Green, Willie Mitchell and Al Jackson.

His debut single has been a while in the making after meeting producer, and now his manager, Rayan ‘Rocky’ Russell in 2016. In 2018 he featured on a track on a compilation celebrating Red Stripe's 100th anniversary "Journey With Stripe" which is a bit of poppy affair reminiscent of CeeLo Green titled "Keeping It Up".

We found a live video performance of the song from Oct '22 billed as J-Summa & The Outlawz who are J-Summa, Rocky and, presumably, Clifton Dillon, the song's other writer.

A 9:30 version of the song also features on their Soundcloud channel from three years ago along with five other songs (which sound like live takes) billed as Amanda's Birthday Rehearsals so perhaps recordings of rehearsals for a live show?

Aalon [2023] - A Pocket Full Of Tears [Round 2 Music]

L.A. singer/songwriter/guitarist Aalon Butler played with Eric Burden (War/The Animals) before forming his own group Aalon in the mid 70s who recorded rock-flavoured soul and funk for Arista. They released just one album "Cream  City" in 1977 and three singles from it.

However, Aalon is back with a new single "A Pocketful Of Tears" and music video released last Friday (10 Mar '23). It's got a lazy west coast vibe which may appeal to the Yacht Soul fraternity. Give this one a few listens as it's a bit of 'creeper'!

I don't know what Aalon has been doing in the years between the 80s and present day but they are certainly performing live now as they have flyers for several gigs on their website on bills with veteran artists such as Brenton Wood, Barbara Mason, War, The Chi-Lites, The Bar-Kays, Sly Slick & Wicked and new artists on the East L.A. lowrider scene such as Trish Toledo and Thee Sacred Souls.

Krishawna Feat. Kion [2023] - I Let Cha [Savannah Street Music] OUT NOW

Another posted from promo a week or so ago is the new single "I Let Cha" from Krishawna which is out now on digital platforms. It's her first single since her sophomore album "Second Offering", discounting a Christmas single, and is from her forthcoming third album.

Sacramento, CA born, Minneapolis based, Krishawna released her debut album "Full Disclosure" in March 2021 and followed it last March ('22) with "Second Offering" with the lead song "I'm Done", in particular, doing very well  in the UK.

Digital platforms are giving a release date of 1 Mar which can't be accurate as we didn't post the promo until 4 Mar and it certainly wasn't available then. Perhaps it was 6 Mar as that's when it was posted on YouTube.
