The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Part 24 (Jul 2021 Wk 28) Spotify Playlist

My selection of the best releases this week (Jul 2021 Wk 28).

No Global Soul chart this week so nothing to report on last week's tips. Another fairly slow week for new releases but a few gems did materialise, although it wasn't particularly easy choosing my top twelve so I've actually included a track released and posted last week to make up the dozen i.e. Jam & Lewis Feat. Mary J. Blige.

As far as the SoulStrutter Selection of the Week goes it was a choice of three: Rob Hardt, Ferry Ultra, Sharon Phillips "If These Walls Could Speak", which was eliminated because it was actually released nearly a month ago (even though it wasn't scheduled until 2 Jul and samples were posted on 5 Jun); Eric Roberson "Lessons", another scheduled for 4 Jun but wasn't officially released until Friday (16 Jul), but has been around on YT for over a month and I first posted it on 29 May; so that was eliminated, leaving Eugene Cole "Why Are You Holding Back" as the pick of the week.  Outsiders were Leela James and Castella.

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Covers, Reissues, Remixes & Samples Part 17 (Jul 2021 Wk 28)

My selection of this week's best cover versions, remixes, reissues, previously unreleased and new songs using samples (Jul 2021 Wk 28). (In no particular order).

I've taken some poetic license on a couple of tracks i.e. Doc Shaw was released at the end of May but a new video for it was posted this week. PJ Morton was released as a single in 2019 and an album track in 2020, but has just been nominated for The Stellar Gospel Awards for Song Of The Year, so I thought I'd include it as the likelihood is, if it wins on 1st Aug, it will be reissued? Also Jewell Booker is a few weeks old but for some reason was withdrawn from DSP's and then reissued again so it missed out last week.

Global Soul Chart 17th Jul 2021

There was no new Global Soul chart this week as Franklin Sinclair was at the Open Golf Championship at Royal St. George's this week  ... it's alright for some!

He may well have compiled a new chart but it wasn't broadcast this week, last week's show was broadcast in it's place.

If a new chart is published I will post it. If not, it will be interesting to see what's in next week's.

Calinnah Feat. DJ Research [2021] - Can We [R+D Records]

A new single from Calinnah titled "Can We" released 9 Jul 2021. I'm not sure if you'd call this a cover as it's not  exactly the same, but certainly uses portions of Tevin Campbell's 1993 #1 R&B hit "Can We Talk" (video included below). I guess this would fall into the lo-fi category?

There's not much info available for the artist, Calinnah, who has released nine singles and an EP since appearing to debut last year, however, I believe that she may have released material prior to this as she was featured on Global Soul in 2017. All releases feature DJ Research who there is even less info about.

The video was shot at Ung Real Estate which is in Long Beach, CA so perhaps that's a clue to where she is from? Another hint is the calligraphy used is similar to that used by the lowrider East LA scene.

I did a bit more digging and discovered that her real name is Hannah Calimpusan, originally from Phoenx, AZ, who is a registered nurse at Norwalk Community Hospital which is in outer L.A. If it's the same Hannah Calimpusan, she has also worked a on a couple of movies as an actress, set designer and in the wardrobe dept.

Randy Hall [2021] - Bring It On Home [Ranvera Records]

80s veteran. and Miles Davis collaborator, Randy Hall seems to have made a comeback in 2018. He released two albums in the 80s "I Belong to You" (1984) and "Love You Like a Stranger" (1988). Three singles from the albums entered the R&B charts with "I've Been Watching You (Jamie's Girl)" being his biggest hit reaching #18 in 1984.

His latest single "Bring It On Home" was released on 15 Jul 2021 which has an 80s feel. He released his last single, "A Beautiful Dream", a year ago in Jul 2020 which I think is better than his one as it has a modern soul/steppers groove, so have also included it below.

VA [2021] - First Wives Club (Music from the BET+ Original Series) [Paramount Music]

A compilation of music, presumably, played during the "First Wives Club" BET TV series which is adaptation of the 1996 movie which starred Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton. The BET series stars Jill Scott, Michelle Buteau and Ryan Michelle Bathe.

The soundtrack mainly features two artists, Deborah Cox and Ayana George with three tracks each, the other two tracks include a cover on LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade" sung  by Deborah Cox, Shanice Knox, Chante Moore and Kelly Price and "David & Gary Rap Battle" by Mark Tallman and RonReaco Lee which says it all!

Three of the six tracks by Cox & George are short interludes and the rap battle is only 1:30 so they are 'pushing it" asking full price £7.99 for this album which only includes four full length tracks!

I would have selected Ayana George's "Go There" as the standout track but it is only 55 seconds which is a shame. Similarly Deborah Cox's "I Do" sounds good but again is only 37 seconds. That just leaves the cover of Lady Marmalade (but do we really need this?) and Deborah Cox's "What You Owe" which is quite a peasant neo soul/R&B ballad.

Ayana George is a new name to me, she is Christian recording artist from the Bronx, NY who is also an actress.

Anan Ya'ari Feat. Luna Mae [2021] - Speak Your Mind [Self Released]

Anan Ya'ari is is a producer from Amsterdam who has worked with the likes of Full Crate and Jarreau Vandal. He released his debut single "Speak Your Mind" on 9 Jul 2021 which features another Amsterdam artist Luna Mae. An EP titled "YU" is in the pipeline.

His YT channel has only one video from 2012 using the name Anan Den Boer, which I presume must be his real name as there is a Discogs page for this artist. However I also found some info that states he used to perform with his brother Ilay Ya'ari from Israel so perhaps his real name IS  Ya'ari with Den Beer being a previous stage name?
