The Modulations [2024] - Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simphouse Productions] (Full Album)

Following The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions for Billy Paul last month, the latest set of Paul Simpson re-edits is for The Modulations.

There were two groups named The Modulations active around the same time in the mid 70s. One was a gospel group from Jacksonville, FL, led by Glenn Jones, the other this group from Durham, NC, originally called The Pimps, consisting of Larry 'Little Nick' Allen Jr., Larry Duncan, Henry Channelle and Hoyal Saunders. They released their first single in 1970 as The Modulations Of Durham, North Carolina on New Rochelle, NY, gospel label Mozel.
By 1973 they were signed to Buddah releasing three singles and an album ("It's Rough Out Here") for the label between 1973-75. The first single ("I'm Hopelessly In Love") didn't register but the last two ("I Can't Fight Your Love" and "Worth Your Weight In Gold") both reached the lower echelons of the R&B chart (#65 and #79 respectively). Curiously, two tracks from the album ("Rough Out Here" / "Love At Last") were released on single only in Greece with "Rough Out Here" being paired with "I'll Always Love You" gaining a single release in Peru. With "Rough Out Here" being a modern soul in-demander (and the fetish for 45s) both of these singles command high prices, circa £200+, when they come up for sale.

Musicians on the album included Philly heavyweights Earl Young (drums), Bobby Eli (guitar), Norman Harris (guitar), MFSB (strings) and was arranged by Vince Montana and produced by Bob Curington. Most of the songs were written by Rodney Brown, Willie and Tylon Lester who went on to write and work with artists such as Bobby Thurston, Al Johnson, Gayle Adams, Sharon Redd, Evelyn King and Khemistry in the 80s.

Track listing:

1 - Love at last (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 6:13
2 - I can't fight your love (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 5:22
3 - I'm hopelessly in love (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 4:26
4 - Head on collision with heartbreak (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 9:02
5 - Rough out here (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 4:41
6 - Your love has me locked up (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 5:27
7 - Somebody's been messin' (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 4:32

The first five tracks are from their album with non-album track, "Your Love Has Me Locked Up", being a B side to the single "I Can't Fight Your Love" and the final track, "Somebody's Been Messin'", a previously unreleased bonus track first released on a 2012 expanded CD reissue of "It's Rough Out Here" by Funkytowngrooves.

Full tracks are available to listen to on Paul Simpson's dedicated website available for a two weeks only

The Invitations [2024] - Look On The Good Side / They Say The Girl’s Crazy [Expansion Records #EXS042]

The Invitations are perhaps best known for a couple of Northern Soul monsters. They released their first three records on Bob & Dan Crewe's New York based DynoVoice in 1965-66. Their last for the label, "Skiing In The Snow", was arguably their biggest on the scene and was infamously covered by Wigan's Ovation in 1975 when mass media attention was focused on NS and Wigan Casino in particular, to much chagrin. However, the more soulful "What's Wrong With Me Baby" (also written by Randell & Linzer and recorded on the label by The Toys on their only album in 1966 but not released as a single until 1973 on Virgo), is much better in our opinion. Wigan's Ovation also had a bash at that song on their album "Northern Soul Dancer".

None of the three singles registered on the R&B chart yet they found their way to a major label, MGM, for their next two singles followed by just one on Diamond in 1968. Without any chart success from their first six singles up to 1968, they appear to have gone into hiatus until 1973 when they re-emerged on Silver Blue with Lew Kirton as their lead singer. Their, and the label's, first single was a cover of Jerry Butler's "For Your Precious Love" (co-written with former Impressions The Brooks Brothers (Arthur and Richard)) which gained them their first entry onto the R&B chart peaking at  #17 and just missing out on a Hot 100 position at #110. However, the flip side, "They Say The Girl's Crazy", is what it's sought after for nowadays having been a firm favourite on the modern soul scene for decades. If it's new to you then be prepared to be blown away as it's a superb example of mid 70s Philly soul and is still relatively cheap and easy to pick up on original vinyl, proving that you don't have to take out a mortgage to buy top quality soul records.

The group released three further singles for the label, all produced by Philly producer Bobby Martin, the last being "Look On The Good Side" which has been paired with "They Say The Girl's Crazy" by Expansion Records for release on 7" vinyl next month with the original Silver Blue design.

The group recorded just one more single on Red Greg in 1977. Kirton, of course, went on to have a solo career releasing four albums and had a Northern/Modern Soul favourite in his own right with "Heaven In The Afternoon" on Alston / T.K. in 1977. (posted HERE along with both sides on the reissue and a couple of others by Lew Kirton).

The Nu'rons [2024] - Anthology Of Jersey Soul (Collectors Edition) [Emandolynn Music] (Full Album)

Last October a five track EP by The Nu'rons, "The Philly Soul Sessions", was released by Manny Campbell's Emandolynn Music. It is now followed with a 14 track album, "Anthology Of Jersey Soul", containing unreleased demos and instrumentals along with the five tracks previously released, four of the five songs on their only two singles released and an unreleased demo.

With instrumentals of two of their singles, and "Hurry Up Tomorrow", a previously unreleased song, being released by Symphonical in 2017, it leaves four new songs and a few variants of released songs, one is an acapella version of The Beatles "Yesterday".

According to the credits, the songs were recorded at Sigma Sound studios and musicians included some Philly heavyweights such as Thom Bell (keys), Earl Young (drums), Bobby Eli (guitar and MFSB (strings).

To learn more about the group please read the post for "The Philly Soul Sessions".

Silk [2023] - Somethin' 'Bout The Way [As + Bees #ABEE 6502]

This was posted on Wednesday which we thought was going to be be 12" vinyl only but has been released digitally today.

It's a previously unreleased 70s song "Somethin' 'Bout The Way" by Philly group Silk who had their modern soul classic "I Can't Stop (Turning You On)" bastardised last year by LF System who hit the top of the UK pop chart with it. It spent 53 weeks on the chart and was #1 for 8 weeks in Jul and Aug '22!

A's + Bees are releasing it as their second 12" (they released Rare Pleasure's "Superfine Feeling" in 2021 which was only ever previously on acetate). It consists of the original unreleased mix of the song along with Late Night Tuff Guy (LNTG) Short Edit and LNTG Disco Dub.

The plug/A side is the 6:36 LNTG Disco Dub, with the original 5:12 mix and LNTG 3:34 edit relegated to the B side.

Brenda & The Tabulations [2023] - Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simphouse Productions] (Full Album)

Here we go again with yet another Philadelphia Re-edit Session from Paul Simpson. His subject this time out consists of four tracks by Brenda & The Tabulations from their 1977 album "I Keep Coming Back For More".

The album was recorded at Sigma Sound Studio and produced by a combination of John Davis, Norman Harris, Bobby Eli along with Gilda C. Woods who originally signed the group to her Dionn set up. In fact it was after seeing the group appear at the Uptown Theatre (Philly's version of The Apollo where her DJ husband hosted the shows) that she decided to set up the Dionn label in 1966 to showcase their talent.

The group was formed in 1966 with a line-up of Brenda Payton, Eddie Jackson, Jerry Jones and Maurice Coates and stayed at Dionn and subsidiary label Top and Bottom until being singed to Epic when the line up changed with the three male backing singers departing and replaced by Pat Mercer and Deborah Martin.

Their last few singles for Top And Bottom involved Van McCoy who they continued to work with when they singed to Epic in 1972 with limited success. Only one of their four singles for the label between 1972-75 charted, that being "One Girl Too Late" which was popular in the UK although didn't chart but made it to #46 US R&B.

In 1977 they signed to Chocolate City but in reality it was Brenda with no Tabulations as she was essentially solo by this time. A third album was released "I Keep Coming Back For More" which produced two minor R&B hits "Home To Myself" (#61) and "(I'm A) superstar" (#31).

Brenda died in from breast cancer 1992 aged 46.

Track Listing:

01 - Let's go all the way (Down)... Paul Simpson Climax2 8:16
02 - I keep coming back for more (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 5:15
03 - Everybody's fool (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 9:07
04 - I'm a superstar (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 5:25

Anthony White [2023] - The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simphouse Productions]

The last set of Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions from Paul Simson was a little obscure, being five tracks from Charles Mann

His latest set from Anthony White may also be to some but not to rare soul aficionados as the five of the six tracks are from his highly collectible, and only, 1976 PIR album "Could It Be Magic" (named after the inclusion of a cover of Barry Manilow's song of the same name).

The remaining track "Hey Baby" is possibly his most sought after, a single only from 1975 on PIR. It was written by Bruce Gray of Dunn & Bruce Street with Mikki Farrow who was married to saxophonist, producer and one time Funk Brother Mike Terry. She recorded a big Northern soul double-sider "Could It Be" / "Set My Mind At Ease" (Karate 1966) before moving to Philadelphia in 1968 working with Gamble & Huff as a songwriter and backing vocalist for many Philly artists. She later met Billy Butler, through working with his bother Jerry, and they married.

As is 'de-rigueur' for these edits, all recorded at the famed Sigma Sound Studios but less involvement this time for Baker, Young & Harris although Norman Harris did contribute along with Ron Kersey, Allan Felder, Ron Tyson, Bunny Sigler and Dexter Wansell amongst others.

Track Listing

01 - Where would I be without you (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 5:27
02 - Stop & think it over (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 7:29
03 - Never let you get away from me (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 5:21
04 - Hey baby (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 3:40
05 - Only child's play (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 4:53
06 - Yes, you need love (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 3:26

The Intruders [1973] - I'll Always Love My Mama [Gamble / PIR #ZS7 2506]

Today is Mother's Day in the U.S. so to commemorate it there is only one song ... the classic Philly anthem by The Intruders and a video below of an appearance on Soul Train.

It is also the 50th anniversary this year of the record's release in Mar 1973. Back in those days there were no 12" singles, so the 6:36 album track (from "Save The Children") was spilt into two parts for release on 7".

Surprisingly, for such an iconic song, there are very few covers of it. We know of only three: Tony Strong (2012), an instrumental by The Armada Orchestra (1976) and a semi-instrumental by Dee Brown (2014). If you know of any others, let us know.

In case you missed it, Paul Simpson has done a set of his Philadelphia Re-edits for The Intruders which includes this song.

Charles Mann [2023] - The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simphouse Productions]

Charles Mann will probably not be a particularly well known name except perhaps to rare soul aficionados who he will be known best for three songs, "It's All Over" (which was the last song played at the end of each Northern Soul All-nighter session at The Pier/Winter Gardens at Cleethorpes in the mid 70s) along with the modern soul dancer "I Can Feel It".

The other is "Shonuff No Funny Stuff Love" (included below) which is a cracking modern soul dancer. It was released on Dave Crawford's LA Records in 1981, which sadly isn't, and can't, be included on this new four track Philadelphia Re-edit Session by Paul Simpson as it wasn't recorded or produced in Philly, even though some issues of the record were manufactured and distributed by Jamie/Guyden.

The four tracks that Paul has edited are all from his first solo album "Say You Love Me Too" for ABC in 1973 which involved the usual Philly suspects Baker, Young & Harris along with Vince Montana as well as percussionist Larry Washington and recorded at Sigma engineered by Joe Tarsia. He released just one more album "High Qualities" in 1989.

The opening track is a rendition of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker penned Steely Dan song "Do It Again", the last "Stop" was written by Dave Crawford and Joe Hinton (which I seem to recall was recorded by someone else but don't remember by whom) with the remaining two written by Mann.

Track Listing

01 - Do It again (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 8:59
Only released as a single in France & Germany

02 - It's all over (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 3:35

03 - I can feel it (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 4:25
       His first single on ABC

04 - Stop (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 3:24
Released as a single only in Germany

Full tracks are available to listen to on Paul's dedicated website available for a two weeks only. We're not sure exactly when this was released but, to be on the safe side, bag it now if you want it as they have a limited shelf life before being withdrawn.

The Intruders [2023] - The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simphouse Productions]

The Intruders were possibly one of the underrated groups on Philadelphia International, in the shadows of The O'Jays and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. However, arguably, they achieved success well before both those groups with R&B Top 10 hits in the 60s such as "Together", "Cowboys To Girls" and "(Love Is Like)  A Basketball Game".

Probably best known in the 70s for their PIR hit "I'll Always Love My Mama" which they weren't able to top chart-wise but did release some great music in the mid 70s Philly era and Paul Simpson has selected fourteen of them for his re-edit session.

All tracks are taken from just two albums and a single:

1973 - Save The Children *
1974 - Energy Of Love **

Track Listing

01 - A nice girl like you (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 4:14 **
02 - I'll always love my mama (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 7:41 *
03 - Everyone's a star (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 07:37 **
04 - Energy of love (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 4:53 **
05 - What's easy for two is hard for one (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 4:44 **
06 - Plain ol' fashioned girl (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 3:56 **
07 - Be on time (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 6:49 **
08 - Be thankful for what you got (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 5:03 **
09 - Mother & child reunion (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 5:19 *
10 - Hang on in there (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 4:48 *
11 - (Win, place or show) She's a winner (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 4:02 * [1]
12 - Traveling home (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 4:13 * [1]
13 - To be happy is the real thing (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 4:30 *
14 - I wanna know your name (Instrumental) 5:50 *

1 Bonus track on 2008 Japanese CD reissue

Full tracks are available to listen to on Paul's dedicated website available for an extended two weeks, but best be quick on this one as it was released a few weeks ago and the website states 'held over' so it may disappear soon.

VA [2023] - Philly Groove Records Presents: Deeper In The Groove [Philly Groove Records] (Full Album)

A remastering of a 2014 compilation with two addition tracks from the vaults of Philly Groove records titled "Philly Groove Records Presents: Deeper In The Groove" was released on 7 Apr '23.

It consists of four tracks from Flashlight's eponymous, and only, album from 1978 along with three tracks from Quickest Way Out who actually evolved into Flashlight in 1978. Two of the tracks were released on singles for Warner Brothers in 1975/76, the other "Ain't Easy" appears to be unreleased. Surprisingly, Flashlight's best known and loved track, "Beware She's Pulling My Strings" isn't included.

There are two songs from recently deceased (Dec '21) David Lasley, his debut single which is a cover of The Chiffons "One Fine Day" and the self-written flip "Merry-Go-Round".

Finishing Touch released just two singles for Philly Groove with their modern soul 'anthem' "Second Best (Is Never Enough)" featuring on both along with, initially, "Your Love Has Put A Spell On Me" and then as the flip to "Sunshine And Promises". The other track included on the compilation by them, "Don't Put Me Down", was  left in the vaults but has re-emerged over the years on several compilations and was subjected to several remixes in 2014.

All 14 tracks above appeared on the first compilation in 2014 which have been remastered and two additional tracks included for the latest release. The two new tracks are Tapestry's 1973 single "Big Stone Wall (Around Your Heart)" and Broadway Express 1972 B side "Puff Puff (You're Gone)".

Many of the tracks have featured on other Philly Groove compilations and, to be frank, are probably not the best examples of the label's output barring Finishing Touch's "Second Best (Is Never Enough)". The label ran from from late 1967 to mid 1974 releasing just short of 50 singles predominantly by The Delfonics and First Choice.

The Sextones [2023] - Cowboys To Girls [Record Kicks]

The Sextones released a decent cover of Jean Plum's "Here I Go Again" at the end of Jan. and followed it with another cover of Papa Bear & His Cubs "You're So Fine". It has been paired with "Cowboys To Girls" for vinyl release on 10 Mar '23, which are already sold out on Bandcamp but you may still find one at one of the vinyl record dealers or from Record Kicks direct.

Last year we did a Version Excursion of "Cowboys To Girls" (written by Gamble & Huff and originally recorded by The Intruders in 1968) which featured 23 different versions of the song so we'll let you decide where this latest version by The Sextones fits in.

The Sextones are quartet from Reno, Nevada formed as The Mark Sexton Band in 2007. They released two albums under that name ("Multifomity"  (2008) and "Listen Out" (2010)) and changed their name to The Sextones in 2015 releasing their first album using the name, "Moonlight Vision", in 2017.

The current line-up is Mark Sexton (guitar, vocals), his younger brother Chris (piano), Alexander Korostinsky (bass) and Daniel Weiss (drums) who have known each other since childhood.

VA [2023] - Love Is the Message: The Sound of Philadelphia Vol. 3 [United Souls #PIR 5003]

Following the release of two 8 CD box sets of Philadelphia International 70s albums "Get On Board The Soul Train: The Sound Of Philadelphia Volume 1" (May '21) and "Satisfaction Guaranteed: The Sound Of Philadelphia Volume 2" (Nov '21), United Souls' (Snapper Music Ltd) series of box sets continues in April '23 with the third volume "Love Is the Message: The Sound of Philadelphia Vol. 3" due on 7 April.

The series, we are told, will consist of 15 volumes covering all studio albums released by the label, each containing 8 albums on individual CDs. They will be released in chronological order. That's 120 albums in total by our reckoning.

All albums have been remastered from original tapes and as a bonus each set includes a 12" single, this one has MFSB "T.S.O.P." paired with Trammps "Stop And Think". I suspect that these 12 inchers may become future collector's items.

The third volume contains the following albums which are good value for money as the total cost equates to £6.25 per album. I believe that they are only available on CD i.e. no digital downloads.

The Ebonys - The Ebonys [PIR #KZ 32419] 1973
MFSB - Love Is the Message (PIR #KZ 32707] 1973
Bunny Sigler - That's How Long I'll Be Loving You [PIR #KZ 32859] 1974
Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - To Be True [PIR #KZ 33148] 1975
The O'Jays - Survival [PIR #KZ 33150] 1975
Thad Jones & Mel Lewis - Potpourri [PIR #KZ 33152] 1974
Monk Montgomery -  Reality [PIR #KZ 33153] 1974
Billy Paul -  Got My Head on Straight [PIR #KZ 33157] 1975

Curtis Mayfield [2023] - The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simpson Uniquity]

At the blink of an eye after the last set for Philly Devotions, (and Revelation before that also in Feb) a new set of Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions from Paul Simpson is out for Curtis Mayfield.

It consists of seven tracks spanning three albums between 1979-85.

01 - Body Guard
02 - It's Lovin' Time (Your Baby's Home)
03 - Over The Hump
04 - Tell Me, Tell Me (How Ya Like To Be Loved)
05 - Victory
06 - What Is My Woman For?
07 - You Better Stop

"Body Guard" is from "We Come In Peace With A Message Of Love" (1985).

"It's Lovin' Time (Your Baby's Home)" is from "The Right Combination" with Linda Clifford (1980).

"Over The Hump", "Tell Me, Tell Me (How Ya Like To Be Loved)", "Victory", "What Is My Woman For?" and "You Better Stop" all from "Heartbeat" (1979).

"Heartbeat" was recorded at Sigma with songs either written, arranged or produced by Norman Harris and Ron Tyson or Bunny Sigler and his brother James.

"The Right Combination" was also recorded at Sigma with the included track produced by Harris. The track from the 1985 album "We Come In Peace With A Message Of Love" was written and arrange by Harris and Tyson and produced by Harris.

Full tracks are available to listen to on Paul's dedicated website available for two weeks until around 22 Mar 2023.
