The Sextones [2023] - Love Can't Be Borrowed [Record Kicks] (Full Album)

We've had four tracks from it as singles already but the full album "Love Can't Be Borrowed" from The Sextones is finally released today (29 Sep).

The opening track "Daydreaming", whilst not being released digitally, was the flip side to the Colemine licensed single "Beck & Call" on vinyl and what a lovely track it is which sets up the album nicely. Then follows three of the singles "Without You", "Better Late Than Never" and the Curtis Mayfield inspired "Beck & Call". The next five tracks are all original compositions, (our picks of the new songs are "This Could Be Forever" and "Your Love Shines Golden") before the album ends with the title track "Love Can't Be Borrowed".

As we alluded to on the Jalen Ngonda post, this album wil be up there with the best of the retro soul albums released in 2023 i.e. Jalen Ngonda, Bobby Harden & The Soulful Saints and, to an extent, October London.

The Sextones are a quartet from Reno, Nevada formed as The Mark Sexton Band in 2007. They released two albums under that name ("Multifomity"  (2008) and "Listen Out" (2010)) and changed their name to The Sextones in 2015 releasing their first album using the name, "Moonlight Vision", in 2017.

The current line-up is Mark Sexton (guitar, vocals), his younger brother Chris (piano), Alexander Korostinsky (bass) and Daniel Weiss (drums) who have known each other since childhood.

The latest album as The Sextones is produced by Kelly Finnigan of The Monophonics.

The Sextones [2023] - Beck & Call [Colemine #CLMN-204]

We posted a short sample of the new single "Beck & Call" from The Sextones' yesterday ahead of its release today. It's from their forthcoming album "Love Can't Be Borrowed" on Record Kicks but the single is released by Colemine who have licensed the single ahead of the album release which is due on 29 Sep.

It's a self-written, retro, sweet soul tune (a little reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield "The Makings Of You") that will be released on vinyl on 18 Aug, with "Daydreaming" (the opening track of the new album) on the B side. We are told that the single is an 'extract' from the album, whether that just means that it's been extracted from it or whether the album version is longer we will have to wait and see.

Whilst the group has released several covers of rare soul tunes as singles, none of them are included on the album which consists of all original songs.

If you've been following the blog this year then you will know all about The Sextones from Nevada who are signed to Italy's Record Kicks label and produced by Kelly Finnigan of The Monophonics.

The Sextones [2023] - Beck & Call [Colemine #CLMN-204] PROMO

This is rather confusing as this song "Beck & Call" is from The Sextones' forthcoming album "Love Can't Be Borrowed" on Record Kicks but is due for release tomorrow by Colemine. It transpires that Colemine has licensed it for release ahead of the album which is due on 29 Sep.

It's a, self-written, retro sweet soul tune that will be available digitally tomorrow and also it appears that it will be released on vinyl on 18 Aug, but no word of what will be on the B side as yet, perhaps an instrumental version?

If you've been following the blog this year then you will know all about The Sextones from Nevada who are signed to Italy's Record Kicks label and produced by Kelly Finnigan of The Monophonics.
