Al Green [2023] - Perfect Day [Fat Possum Records]

A new single from Al Green on Matthew Johnson's Oxford, MS, based Fat Possum Records was released on 21 Aug. It's the Rev.'s version of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day". 

In Dec '20 he released "Before The Next Teardrop Fall" for the label which began life as a country song first recorded by Duane Dee in 1967. We featured it only last month in the Creative Funk Discography as it was also recorded by The Limelites on Creative Funk in 1975.

In between both singles Fat Possum released "Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy) (Orchestral)" (Aug '21) from a later album "Give Me More Love (The Orchestral Greatest Hits)" (Sep '21).

The label has also reissued many of Green's albums over the years since it was set up in the late 90s.

We have to go back to 2008 and "Lay It Down" for his last set of original material for Blue Note. Green is now 77 so we wonder whether there are likely to be any more new albums, although his voice still sounds good on the latest recording, but of course we don't know when it was actually recorded?

David Hudson [2009] - (Girl I'm Coming Home To) Something Good [Soul Junction #SJ504] v Al Green [2003] - Million To One [Blue Note #7243 5 93556]

Eagle eyed (or is it rabbit eared?) Gary Van Den Bussche spotted the similarities between these two songs on his radio show today.

David Hudson's "(Girl I'm Coming Home To) Something Good" was a previously unreleased 80s recording issued by Soul Junction on 7" vinyl in 2009. Gary then played Al Green's, album only track, "Million To One" from his 2003 album "I Can't Stop" and hey presto the backing is the same.

Al Green [2021] - Give Me More Love [Hi/Fat Possum] (Full Album)

A few weeks ago I posted a pre-released track from this album "Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy)". The full album, titled "Give Me More Love", gets a release today (24 Sap 2021) and gives a new lease of life to Al Green's classic songs with them all being re-recorded as 'orchestral' versions.

The dozen tracks selected should need no introduction but they all now have a lusher sound with new full orchestral arrangements overlaying the original vocals.

I think "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" in particular benefits from the new arrangement.

Joss Stone [2020] - Walk With Me

Joss Stone has released her first new material for three years, and what a tune.  Authentic deep southern soul with gospel influences.  Hard to believe that this young girl from Kent is still only 33 as she seems to have been around forever.  She debuted with her 'Soul Sessions' album in 2003 aged just 16.

I've also included the incredible duet she did with Rev. Al Green on his cover of The Bee Gees How Can You Mend A Broken Heart originally released (as far as I can tell) on Sex And The City soundtrack in 2008.
