Devon Gilfillian [2020] - What's Going On [UMG Recordings] (Full Album)

We've had one the best albums of the year (decade?) in October London's "The Rebirth of Marvin" and have just stumbled across an album from Oct 2020 by Devon Gilfillian (who has a new album "Love You Anyway" that is getting airplay for "The Recipe") which we missed at the time of release. Although we did note it in a mini version excursion in Nov  2020 but didn't post the full album even though it did enter the UK Soul Chart at the time. So in case you also missed it here it is.

It's basically a track by track cover of Marvin Gaye's 1971 seminal "What's Going On" album but before you roll your eyes, give it a listen as it's very good. Available digitally and on vinyl.

Gilfillian is originally from Morton, PA, now based in Nashville, TN, and has a degree in Psychology. He joined a blues cover band in 2013 and then released a debut self-titled EP in 2016. "What's Going On" is his second album which followed another in 2020 "Black Hole Rainbow" with his current album "Love You Anyway" being his third.

George Benson [2020] - Still in Love with You [George Wallert]

A compilation only track "Still in Love with You" from George Benson is currently getting radio airplay all of a sudden. It was released on a compilation "Love Songs & More" in June 2020.

The compilation was put out by George Wallert who is a producer and produced Benson's 1993 album "Love Remembers", so perhaps this is a song that didn't make it to the album?

The compilation includes songs sung by Dionne Warwick, O.C. Smith, Chuck Jackson, Cuba Gooding amongst others. He seems to have worked quite closely with O.C. Smith, writing and producing much of his 80s material including one of his favourites in rare soul circles, "What'cha Gonna Do" / "Nothing But The Best".

It's George Benson's 80th birthday today so we will also direct you to "The George Benson Megamix" done by Alan Coulthard for DMC in 1983 with a mix of his 70s/80s classics.

Khruangbin v The Soul Surfers - Summer Madness

How appropriate for this summer, heatwaves, droughts, floods, and wildfires all occurring concurrently around the world... Summer Madness!

This track popped up whilst listening to the last post for The Ironsides. It's from Khruangbin off a Dec 2020 album "Night Time Tales: Khruangbin" and then immediately afterwards another cover of the Kool & The Gang song popped up by The Soul Surfers from Sep 2019! So, given we are approaching hump day and there is nothing much else around, why not?

Eric Scott [2020] - Peace Bomb [Itzall Goode Music]

Sadly Ukraine enters the eleventh week of war with Vlad The Invader increasing his bombardment in some vain (and vain) attempt to claim a victory for his people (subservants) for Victory Day celebrations on 9 May.

This week's song "Peace Bomb" has been posted before when it was released in 2020 as the title track from the album of the same name by Washington D.C. blue-eyed soulster Eric Scott. It was also released on vinyl by LRK Records last October.

The Dells [2022] - The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simpson Uniquity] (Full Album)

If you recall a couple of weeks ago I posted a compilation of Paul Simpson re-edits of Joe Simon's Gamble & Huff material "The Philadelphia Re-edit  Sessions" which was only to be available for two weeks. Yeah right, marketing hype, you probably thought, as I did, but indeed they are no longer available.

Simpson has done another set, this time of The Dells material produced by Norman Harris and Ron Tyson, also called "The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions" which again is only available for two weeks, so if you want it make sure you grab it.

It consists of nine tracks and I'll post the track listing as I didn't with the Joe Simon release and now don't remember what all the tracks were!

1/ Get on down (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 05:17

2/ Rich man, poor man (Peace) Paul Simpson Re-edit 06:36

3/Teaser (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 04:08

4/ Our love (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 05:05

5/ Don't trick me, treat me (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 05:37

6/ They said it couldn't be done (But we did it) Paul Simpson Re-edit 06:06

7/ God helps those (Who help themselves) Paul Simpson Re-edit 05:55

8/ Love connection (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 06:17

9/ How can one man be so lucky (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 05:09

All of the tracks are from from their 1977 Mercury period from their last two (of three) albums for the label "They Said It Couldn't Be Done" and "Love Connection"

A couple of the obvious standouts are "Our Love" and "Don't Trick Me Treat Me"

Only available via Bandcamp and only until 14 Feb 2022.

Carmichael Musiclover [2020] - A Little Inspiration [One Mic]

Well now that the seasonal festivities are over and the new year resolutions commence I came across this 'inspirational' video from Carmichael Musiclover with a track taken off his second album of last year "Lifeline" which I thought was appropriate for this time of year.

If you've checked out my 'Best of' lists for 2021 year then you will already know that I've chosen his album "Slow Motion" as my album of the year and taken, what I consider, the best, and most soulful track, from it and made it my track of the year. His first of two albums from 2020 "The Best Thing Yet" was also chosen as 2020's best album. He is quickly becoming my favourite male artist with his consistently excellent material, all independently produced with corporate bean counters kept well out of the way and artists left to do what they feel is right!

If you've yet to have the pleasure of appreciating his music I think I'll post up a compilation of some of his best tracks, which may be a sizable playlist as most of his albums have between 14 and 17 tracks on them, 108 tracks to choose from his last 7 albums alone. Much of his recent music has already been posted search here.
