B.B. King [2022] - The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simpson Uniquity]

The next set of Paul Simpson The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions was released on Tuesday (19 Jul 2022). It's a bit of a 'left field' choice being B.B. King

Don't forget that these are only ever available from Bandcamp for a limited two week period so this one will be gone by 2 Aug!

The album consists of four tracks from "To Know You Is To Love You" (1973) and five from "Friends" (1974) both released on ABC.

Both albums were recorded at the famed Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia and produced by Dave Crawford who wrote the Candi Staton's hit "Young Hearts Run Free". He also contributed to the writing of most of the tracks although  "To Know You Is To Love You" was written by Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright, "Baby I'm Yours" by Van McCoy (first recorded by Barbara Lewis in 1965) and "Respect Yourself" by Luther Ingram and Sir Mack Rice (a US hit for Staple Singers in 1971 (one of their biggest) but, as often the case, Robert Palmer, The Kane Gang and Bruce Willis had UK pop chart success with it and the Staple Singers didn't!).

1973 - To Know You Is To Love You *
1974 - Friends **

Track Listing:
1 - Friends (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 06:47 **
2 - To know you is to love you (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 08:33 *
3 - Philadelphia (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 05:37 **
4 - I like to live the love (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 04:46 *
5 - Respect yourself (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 05:14 *
6 - Who are you (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 05:37 *
7 - I got them blues (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 04:26 **

The Reflex [2022] - RKIT / WTLDY [Revision Records #REVREC009]

A couple of The Reflex mixes that have been around a few years have just received a release on 12" vinyl (8 Apr 2022).

The first is Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" ("RKIT") from 1983 coupled with The Isley Brothers' 1973 version of "That Lady" which they originally recorded in 1964 as "Who's That Lady" on United Artists.

If being pedantic, it should really be titled "TDLY" and not "WTLDY" to avoid confusion as the 70s version is considerably different to the 60s version (included below if you don't know it).

Eddie Kendricks [2022] - The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simpson Uniquity]

Two weeks on from his Manhattans sessions Paul Simpson releases his The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions for Eddie Kendricks. The tracks are all from his two 1976 albums recorded at Sigma Sound Studio i.e.  "Goin' Up In Smoke" and  "He's A Friend" both produced by Norman Harris.

You should know the score by now .. available ONLY for two weeks from Bandcamp.

Kendricks, as you will of course know, was a member of the Temptations throughout the 60s and left for a solo career in 1971. His last recording with The Tempts was "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" in 1971.

He is probably remembered in the mainstream for his 1973 US #1 hit "Keep On Truckin'" which was his only UK hit. Another three of his recordings reached Billboard Hot 100 top 40 "Boogie Down" (#2 1973), "Son of Sagittarius" (#28 1974), "Shoeshine Boy" (#18 1975), "He's a Friend" (36 1976).

Kendricks died from lung cancer in 1992 aged 52 having released around a dozen solo studio albums. He released a live album with Hall & Oates and David Ruffin in 1985 and an album with Ruffin in 1987.

Brian Jackson [2022] - All Talk [BBE] (Remixes)

Released today (18 Feb 2022) are seven mixes of "All Talk", the original version was pre-released and posted couple of weeks ago from a forthcoming album by Brian Jackson "This Is Brian Jackson" due on 6 May 2022.

Perhaps best known for his albums as co-artist/producer with Gil Scott-Heron in the 1970s, It will be the the veteran musician's first true solo studio album in 20 years which he began work on when recording "Bridges" with Gil Scott-Heron in 1976.

Brian Jackson remains active and innovative, producing artists such as Will Downing and Gwen Guthrie, recording with Kool and the Gang, Roy Ayers, Sean Ono Lennon and constantly called upon for contributions by many other artists as well.

Please take time to watch the video tribute by Dr Todd Boyd to familiarise yourself with Brian Jackson's contribution as he always seems to have been 'shadowed' by Gil Scott-Heron with his name being dropped when they were actually a duo/team on the seminal recording in the 70s.

NOTE Only £1.79 on Amazon for all 7 mixes!

Ecstasy, Passion & Pain [2022] - The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simpson Uniquity]

Another of those Bandcamp only Paul Simpson The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions was released today (18 Feb 2022)  and is available for two weeks ONLY. This time around it's the turn of Ecstasy, Passion & Pain. Released today so you've got until 4 Mar to grab it and then it will be gone.

Ecstasy, Passion & Pain were founded around 1972 by Barbara Roy (aka Barbara Gaskins) and disbanded in 1977 after one album and approx. eight singles. Another single was was released as Barbara Roy & Ecstasy, Passion & Pain in 1981. They had six entries in the US R&B charts with all but one getting into the lower reaches of the Hot 100 with "Ask Me" (video footage below from Soul Train) and "Touch And Go" being their biggest hits.

Prior to Ecstasy, Passion & Pain, Barbara Roy/Gaskins  sang in a duo with her niece Brenda Gaskins as Barbara & Brenda who released around eight singles between 1963-68. One of which was a cover of a song recorded a few months earlier on the same label, Dynamo, by Tommy Hunt "Never Love A Robin" (written by Luther Dixon and Inez Foxx) which is regarded as a Northern Soul classic.

Roy then went on to release several solo singles in the 80s.

The Dells [2022] - The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simpson Uniquity] (Full Album)

If you recall a couple of weeks ago I posted a compilation of Paul Simpson re-edits of Joe Simon's Gamble & Huff material "The Philadelphia Re-edit  Sessions" which was only to be available for two weeks. Yeah right, marketing hype, you probably thought, as I did, but indeed they are no longer available.

Simpson has done another set, this time of The Dells material produced by Norman Harris and Ron Tyson, also called "The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions" which again is only available for two weeks, so if you want it make sure you grab it.

It consists of nine tracks and I'll post the track listing as I didn't with the Joe Simon release and now don't remember what all the tracks were!

1/ Get on down (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 05:17
2/ Rich man, poor man (Peace) Paul Simpson Re-edit 06:36
3/Teaser (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 04:08
4/ Our love (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 05:05
5/ Don't trick me, treat me (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 05:37
6/ They said it couldn't be done (But we did it) Paul Simpson Re-edit 06:06
7/ God helps those (Who help themselves) Paul Simpson Re-edit 05:55
8/ Love connection (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 06:17
9/ How can one man be so lucky (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 05:09

All of the tracks are from from their 1977 Mercury period from their last two (of three) albums for the label "They Said It Couldn't Be Done" and "Love Connection"

A couple of the obvious standouts are "Our Love" and "Don't Trick Me Treat Me"

Only available via Bandcamp and only until 14 Feb 2022.

Joe Simon [2022] - The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simpson Uniquity]

OK listen up as you need to get off the blocks on this one if you want it as it is ONLY available for two weeks (according to Bandcamp), so as it was released a few days ago (15 Jan 2022) that means you've got until 29 Jan 2022 to grab it!

It's an album of Joe Simon tracks re-edited by Paul Simpson, presumably as a tribute following his death last month. I think my favourite track on it is "I.O.U." but have to say I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't include one of his best tracks "Step By Step" though!

VA [2021] - Philadelphia International Records: Dimitri From Paris Remixes [Sony] (Full Album)

If you haven't already had your fill of PIR remixes this year then yet another one was released today (10 Dec 2021). This time at the hands of Dimitri From Paris (Dimitrios Yerasimos who is actually Turkish) and all songs are from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and Teddy Pendergrass.

The set kicks of with  an almost 12 minute version of one of their best "The Love I Lost" which came as a surprise to me when I heard this being played on Northern Soul dance floors only a few years ago. I thought that this was a massive pop hit, and upon checking, it was #21 on UK pop chart in Feb 1974 and their second biggest US hit after "If You Don't Know Me By Now", but of course anyone under the age of 50 wouldn't remember it but surely you must have been living on the moon to have never heard this on radio at some point in your life? Anyway, if 12 minutes wasn't long enough for you there are another two versions, a super disco blend take 2 and super disco instrumental taking up a third of the 102 minute set. ... 'If You Don't Know Me By Now?' ... you will after this set!

There are also three versions of Teddy P's "The More I Get The More I Want" and  two of "You Can't Hide From Yourself" leaving space for just three of  HM & Blue Notes songs "Bad Luck", "Tell The World How I Feel About 'Cha Baby" and "Don't Leave Me This Way".

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra [2021] - Motown With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (A Symphony Of Soul) [Island]

As you will no doubt be aware two tracks have already been pre-released and the Marvin Gaye featuring Beverly Knight has gone ballistic (on this blog at least) with by far the most views of anything posted this year. I don't listen to national radio but I would imagine that this has been all over BBC Radio 2? Surprisingly the Jimmy Ruffin track featuring Mica Pars isn't following suit!

When I posted the first pre-released track at the beginning of October I quipped that the track listing was a bit unimaginative, which is still the case. Indeed Beverly Knight has performed live versions of Stevie Wonder's 'hidden gem' "Ribbon In The Sky" (posted here), so wouldn't it have been a treat to have something like that that included instead of being all the tried and tested, 'run-of-the-mill', 'standard' Motown tunes?  I'm not knocking what they have done as they are all performed exquisitely but would have been nice to have something a bit different, but then I would guess the timing of it's release is for the Christmas market.

I think my pick of the bunch would have to be "Just My Imagination".

01/ Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - Dancing In The Street
02/ Four Tops - Reach Out I'll Be There
03/ Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine
04/ Jimmy Ruffin Feat. Mica Paris - What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted
05/ Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The Tears Of A Clown
06/ Jackson 5 - I'll Be There
07/ The Supremes - I Hear A Symphony
08/ Marvin Gaye Feat. Beverley Knight - Abraham, Martin & John
09/ The Temptations - My Girl
10/ The Temptations - Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)
11/ Billy Preston & Syreeta - With You I'm Born Again
