George Benson [2020] - Still in Love with You [George Wallert]

A compilation only track "Still in Love with You" from George Benson is currently getting radio airplay all of a sudden. It was released on a compilation "Love Songs & More" in June 2020.

The compilation was put out by George Wallert who is a producer and produced Benson's 1993 album "Love Remembers", so perhaps this is a song that didn't make it to the album?

The compilation includes songs sung by Dionne Warwick, O.C. Smith, Chuck Jackson, Cuba Gooding amongst others. He seems to have worked quite closely with O.C. Smith, writing and producing much of his 80s material including one of his favourites in rare soul circles, "What'cha Gonna Do" / "Nothing But The Best".

It's George Benson's 80th birthday today so we will also direct you to "The George Benson Megamix" done by Alan Coulthard for DMC in 1983 with a mix of his 70s/80s classics.

George Benson [1983] - The George Benson Megamix (Alan Couthard) [DMC]

I was chatting with DJ/promoter Gary Van Den Bussche yesterday and the subject of DMC (Disco Mix Club) came up. It was a exclusive DJ members only club set up in the early 80s by Radio Luxemburg DJ Tony Prince. Each month they sent out promos and mixtapes to DJs. initially on cassette and then on vinyl.

We believe that Prince sold it some years ago but it is still going strong. Occasionally they would do specific artist mixes and it reminded me of one of their best mixes, that I remember, a George Benson mix done by Alan Coulthard which is posted on YouTube.

DJ and Record Mirror columnist James Hamilton used to do vintage 60s mixes which were also rather good. His column in Record Mirror was essential reading for DJs between 1975-86 and a full archive of them has been posted on a dedicated blog.

I still have few of the cassettes but many have got lost or 'half-inched' over the years which is a downer as the Benson mix now sells for up to £60!

Track List:

01 - Lady Love Me (One More Time)
02 - Turn Your Love Around
03 - What's On Your Mind
04 - Love Will Come Again
05 - Give Me The Night
06 - Never Give Up On A Good Thing
07 - Love X Love
08 - Love Ballad
09 - Feel Like Making Love
10 - Inside Love (So Personal

George Benson [1993/1996] I'll Be Good To You / Marvin Said [Warner Bros]

If you like all kinds of soul music, especially underplayed and undiscovered gems, then I recommend that you tune in to Gary Van Den Bussche's  weekday radio show between 11:00-13:00 GMT on Starpoint radio as he always delivers some great and rarely heard tunes.

Unfortunately, as his show is daily, he doesn't produce podcasts which is why I regularly cherry pick many of the gems he uncovers to feature on the blog so they can be heard if you didn't catch the show.

Here's two of three tracks played today on a section he terms the 'lunchtime sandwich' where he features three tracks from a chosen artist. Today it was the turn of George Benson. These two tracks are album only "I'll Be Good To You" (from "Love Remembers" 1993) (did get a 12" promo only release) and "Marvin Said" (from "That's Right" 1996)

Someday We'll All Be Free - more versions

On the back of having just binge watched Godfather Of Harlem (prequel to American Gangster) I decided to watch the 1992 Malcolm X movie starring Denzel Washington (as Malcolm features extensively in GOH).  The full 8:22 Aretha Franklin's version of Someday We'll All Be Free plays over the closing credits.  A few weeks ago I posted several versions of Someday We'll All Be Free but omitted the version by Aretha Franklin which is only available on the soundtrack or as a promo CD, cassette or 12" on Qwest.  It's not available on YouTube so I tried to upload it but it was blocked due to copyright but the full version has been posted on Soundcloud (link below).

IMBD rates Godfather Of Harlem 8.0 and Malcolm X 7.7 - NOTE Malcolm X is 3 hrs 22  mins long!

Whilst trying to find Aretha Franklin's version here's a few more I found:

Pink & John Legend - Shining A Light: A Concert for Progress 2015 (Cover Donny Hathaway)

Lalah Hathaway (Marcus Miller Project)  Live Under The Sky 1991

Aza Hancock (Remix)

Recorded live in Los Angeles at Grand Performances, California Plaza July 23, 2010.

Frank McComb (Live Band On The Wall Manchester 2017)
