Little Anthony & The Imperials Feat. Deniece Williams [2008] - You'll Never Know [Imperials Plus #BGCD 3567]

A marvellous song played by Gary Van Den Bussche on his lunchtime show on Starpoint Radio last week was this album only track from Little Anthony & The Imperials featuring Deniece Williams with the title track off a 2008 compilation "You'll Never Know".

It is certainly a new one to me and unfortunately there is no information on the CD to give away who it was written by. However, with a little bit of sleuthing I discovered it was written by Mary Susan Ekler

The album contains both new songs and new versions of old songs. There is another pretty good track on i called "I Ain't Fallin'", so have also included that. They seem to be pretty cheap and easy to find in the US but it doesn't appear to have been released anywhere else.

Jerome Anthony "Little Anthony" Gourdine is now 81 years old. The group was formed in 1957 as The Chesters and were still performing up until 2018 at least, although Little Anthony left in 1975 for a career in acting, and, as you are probably aware, they were then known simply as The Imperials who had a few hits in the 70s.

Someday We'll All Be Free - more versions

On the back of having just binge watched Godfather Of Harlem (prequel to American Gangster) I decided to watch the 1992 Malcolm X movie starring Denzel Washington (as Malcolm features extensively in GOH).  The full 8:22 Aretha Franklin's version of Someday We'll All Be Free plays over the closing credits.  A few weeks ago I posted several versions of Someday We'll All Be Free but omitted the version by Aretha Franklin which is only available on the soundtrack or as a promo CD, cassette or 12" on Qwest.  It's not available on YouTube so I tried to upload it but it was blocked due to copyright but the full version has been posted on Soundcloud (link below).

IMBD rates Godfather Of Harlem 8.0 and Malcolm X 7.7 - NOTE Malcolm X is 3 hrs 22  mins long!

Whilst trying to find Aretha Franklin's version here's a few more I found:

Pink & John Legend - Shining A Light: A Concert for Progress 2015 (Cover Donny Hathaway)

Lalah Hathaway (Marcus Miller Project)  Live Under The Sky 1991

Aza Hancock (Remix)

Recorded live in Los Angeles at Grand Performances, California Plaza July 23, 2010.

Frank McComb (Live Band On The Wall Manchester 2017)
