Nicole Henry [2023] - Is It A Crime? (Radio Edits) [Banister Records]

From Nicole Henry's "Time To Love Again" album (originally released in Oct '21 and repromoted in the UK in Jan '22) is a pair of radio edits of the Sade cover "Is It A Crime" (from "Promise" 1985) released as her latest single.. 

There are two mixes the Extended Radio Edit (4:27) and the straight Radio Edit (3:52) which should be self explanatory as both are shorter than the 6:52 album version.

It may seem surprising now, but Sade's original (which followed "The Sweetest Taboo") failed to break into the UK Top 40 falling outside at #49 and only stayed in the chart for three weeks.

Ms Henry's classy version takes even more of a jazz approach. We've included the original Sade video which is an extended version.

Nicole Henry [2022] - Midnight At The Oasis (Radio Edit) [Banister Records]

A track taken from Nicole Henry's recent album "Time To Love Again" has been given a radio edit (4:21 v 4:40) and released as a single today.

The song, "Midnight At The Oasis", is of course a cover of folk/blues singer Maria Muldaur's 1974 #6 Billboard Hot 100 hit taken from her 1973 self-titled album. It has been covered many times including  by The Brand New Heavies in 1994. The only other notable versions of interest to soulies may be Wayne Henderson (1978) and Bob James & Kirk Whalum (1996).

I've dug up a video of The Brand New Heavies performing the song live with N'Dea Davenport on lead. There was an original promo video but it was rather grainy, although the sound is fine, probably copied from a VHS tape as there is an MTV logo in bottom right corner?

Also included is a video for "Your Smiling Face", a track from her latest album.

Originally released on 15 Oct 2021 Nicole Henry's "Time To Love Again" album is now being re-promoted for the UK audience with a release date of Friday 7 Jan 2022.

Nicole Henry is a jazz singer from Miami Beach who debuted with a award winning album "The Nearness Of You" in 2004. Her aunt is Debra Henry who was lead vocalist for Silk, Anglo Saxon Brown and a much underrated group Ujima and she also recorded a couple of duets with 'The IceMan' Jerry Butler on PIR in 1980.

"Time To Love Again" is her her eighth album and consists of an eclectic mix of jazz standards and reimagined pop songs including, in track order, Nina Simone (on Anthony Newley's "Feeling Good"), Maria Muldaur ("Midnight At The Oasis"), James Taylor ("Your Smiling Face"), Rodgers & Hart standard ("I Didn’t Know What Time It Was"), Sade ("Is It A Crime"), Buffy Sainte-Marie ("Until It's Time To Go"), Nina Simone (again but Johnny Mathis did it first two years prior in 1957 from a film of the same name), Joan Armatrading ("Love And Affection") and finally Stevie Wonder ("Overjoyed").

Not necessarily ground-breaking, but smooth jazz easy listening. The standout track is her version of the standard, "Feeling Good", which has been given more of a Latin rhythm.

Her voice is terrific and I'd love to hear it on some original material as it was 2015 when she released her last album of original material "Summer Sessions".
