Kinsman Dazz Band [2023] - Ghetto Preacher / Saved [Creative Soul #CS-1004]

You may recall two recent releases by Kinsman Dazz Band i.e "Ghetto Preacher" and the follow up "Saved". When we posted "Saved" a couple of weeks ago we told you that it was going to be released on 7" vinyl paired with the previous release.

It's available digitally via Bandcamp by Creative Soul (a new label run by two well know figures on the UK rare soul scene Cliff Steele and Andy 'Tats' Taylor). The limited edition 7" press is available to pre-order for delivery around 8 Oct. It is also available to pre-order via Creative Soul website.

To recap on the history of Kinsman Dazz, they were founded in 1976 in Cleveland, OH, from a merger between jazz fusion band, Bell Telefunk (who Michael Calhoun was a member of) and Mother Braintree and were renamed Kinsman Dazz after Kinsman Grill where they were the house band, Dazz referring to danceable jazz. They were signed to 20th Century Records and released two albums, the first, a self-titled album, as Kinsman Dazz in 1978 followed by "Dazz" in 1979.

They joined Motown in 1980 and their name changed to Dazz Band. After two R&B hits as Kinsman Dazz and several minor R&B hits as Dazz Band they hit pay dirt with their fifth Motown single "Let It Whip" which reached #1 R&B and #5 Hot  100 in 1982. Three other single broke the R&B Top 10, "On The One For Fun", "Joystick" and "Let It All Blow" all making it to #9 in 1983-84.

They have released over twenty albums, including the two for 20th Century Fox and seven for Motown. The line up has changed multiple times and the group splintered and there have been legal disputes over the name Kinsman Dazz. The founder of Kinsman Dazz Band is Michael Calhoun who left Dazz Band in 1981 and formed C- Brand ("Wired For Games" and then Voyeur.

Kinsman Dazz Band feat. Michael J. Calhoun [2023] - Saved [Creative Soul]

Michael J, Calhoun's Kinsman Dazz line-up Kinsman Dazz Band released a single "Ghetto Preacher" at the end of May. It was followed up last week (20 Jul) with another gospel inspired song "Saved".

Calhoun was an original member of Kinsman Dazz who, after being signed to Motown, dropped Kinsman and were known simply as Dazz Band who had a #1 R&B / #5 Hot 100 hit on Motown with "Let It Whip" and R&B Top 10 hits with "On The One For Fun", "Joystick" and  "Let It Al Blow" in the early 80s.

We noted that the label was Creative Soul and have had it confirmed by label owner Cliff Steele that it is scheduled for release on 7" vinyl paired with "Ghetto Preacher" in early October.

It's available to pre-order from Creative Soul's Bandcamp store now for shipping in Oct. We've included the music video for "Ghetto Preacher" to remind you.

Kinsman Dazz Band [2023] - Ghetto Preacher [ECMD]

The new single from Kinsman Dazz Band was released at the end of May but last week a music video for "Ghetto Preacher" was uploaded to their YouTube channel.

The song is a social conscience message song written by Michael J. Calhoun which is compared with songs such as "What's Going On", "Wake Up Everybody", "Ball Of Confusion" and "War".

The lead vocalist is, not surprisingly from his voice, gospel singer minister Eddie B. Sands.

Kinsman Dazz Band is an evolution of the Cleveland based Dazz Band who were created as Kinsman Dazz from jazz fusion band Bell Telefunk in 1977 named after The Kinsman Grill where they played (Dazz being a play on jazz).  This incarnation of the group is led by guitarist Michael J Calhoun who was an original member but left the group in 1981.

Calhoun applied to trademark both names (Kinsman Dazz and Dazz Band) between 2012 and 2014. He was initially successful but was then challenged by founder Bobby Harris who succeeded in having both registrations cancelled. However, as he is now using the name, we assume he must have now obtained the name, or has perhaps more likely circumnavigated it by suffixing 'Band' to Kinsman Dazz?
