The Harlem Gospel Travelers [2024] - We Don't Love Enough [Colemine Records]

The new single from The Harlem Gospel Travelers dropped today along with their previous two singles "God's Love" (16 Apr) and "God's Been Good to Me" (19 Jun '23). With them being bundled together you may guess that there's an upcoming album, "Rhapsody", in Autumn.

The latest single is a cover of The Triumphs' "We Don't Love Enough" (Black Artists Co. 1970) which was originally a social commentary written to make a statement about the injustices of the music industry. The Travelers now sing its lyrics towards human rights.

We believe that it's the same L.A. based Triumphs who had a big Northern Soul tune "I'm Coming To Your Rescue" with a superb deep soul flip, "The World Owes Me A Lovin'", on Okeh in 1967. Although, the line-up may have been different by 1970 as we can't hear the female voice of Delilah Kennebruew (aka Delilah Moore) who pours her heart out on "The World Owes Me A Lovin'" which she wrote.

The Travelers, now consisting of Ifedayo Gatling, George Marage and Dennis Bailey, released their debut LP, "He's On Time", produced by Eli 'The Paper Boy' Reed, to rave reviews in 2019. Their follow up album "Look Up" arrived in Sep 2022.

Tomorrow's Wish [2023] - On My Mind [Emandolyn] (Full Album)

A previously unreleased album from Tomorrow's Wish, "On My Mind",  which includes released and unreleased material is available on Bandcamp.

Several tracks are only available on the vinyl edition and not the digital. Only four tracks can be heard, which their modern soul favourite "My Love With You"  that came out on 12" only on Coastal Records in 1990. Also on the album is the flip side "You Happened To Me".

"My Love For You" may sound familiar as it is very similar to another Coastal artist Teeah-Louise, aka Tierra, who released "Just Loving You" on Midtown in 1978 which has a similar melody (included below). Teeah-Louise also released the flip, "You Happened To Me", on Coastal, not dated but probably late 80s. Interestingly it was issued on promo only which states that it was from an album, "Great Love", which never materialised..

The Atlanta group recorded material in the 70s which has never been released. They released just one gospel album, "'Cause God Is The Answer",  in 1988 and the above 12" in 1990.

This limited press album contains unreleased songs and demos and both sides of their 1990 Coastal 12".

Kinsman Dazz Band feat. Michael J. Calhoun [2023] - Saved [Creative Soul]

Michael J, Calhoun's Kinsman Dazz line-up Kinsman Dazz Band released a single "Ghetto Preacher" at the end of May. It was followed up last week (20 Jul) with another gospel inspired song "Saved".

Calhoun was an original member of Kinsman Dazz who, after being signed to Motown, dropped Kinsman and were known simply as Dazz Band who had a #1 R&B / #5 Hot 100 hit on Motown with "Let It Whip" and R&B Top 10 hits with "On The One For Fun", "Joystick" and  "Let It Al Blow" in the early 80s.

We noted that the label was Creative Soul and have had it confirmed by label owner Cliff Steele that it is scheduled for release on 7" vinyl paired with "Ghetto Preacher" in early October.

It's available to pre-order from Creative Soul's Bandcamp store now for shipping in Oct. We've included the music video for "Ghetto Preacher" to remind you.

Cynthia Jones [2023] - Lifeline [Self Released]

We were introduced to Cynthia Jones last year with her single "Ain't No Half Steppin" which was an original song with a funky gospel/jazz vibe not Heatwave's 1976 hit of the same name written by Rod Temperton.

Cynthia Jones (aka Etheridge) is from Raleigh, SC and, if it's the same artist (it certainly looks like her), has a single dated 1979 on Discogs and a few albums from the noughties and has more recently released a gospel album "Journey Of Soul" in 2011. In 2018 she released her last single "God's Got Me" which is a pleasant soulful gospel ballad and prior to that in 2016 "Give It Up".

Gene Moore [2023] - Introspection [Motown Gospel] (Full EP)

After an Easter vacation and feeling decidedly 'under the weather' upon return with a 25C change in temperature, in the words of Jean Carn, "We Got Some Catchin' Up To Do"! We'll start off by pulling together albums and EPs released over the last 3 weeks.

Gene Moore gave us one of the first killer cuts of 2023 on 20 Jan with his duet with India.Arie "Beautiful" and followed it with a single "Alright" at the end of March. Both are included on an new six track EP "Introspection" released last Friday (14 Apr '23).

"Beautiful" is hard to follow but both "I Believe" and "Thanks" (feat. Oswin Benjamin & Red Hands ) are worthy contenders. "Thanks" is in fact a remix of a track released by Ohio gospel group Red Hands from "The Family Album" (Nov '22) (included below for comparison) on which Moore featured with Houston-based singer/pianist Kim Burrell.
