LAYA [2023] - F'd Up [Warner Records]

Staten Island-born LAYA (Lauren Ayala) is a singer, songwriter, producer, creative director, and visual artist. You won't need to exhaust many brain cells to work out what "F'd Up" means but if your brain cell deficient your reminded plenty of times during the song.

It's an annoyingly catchy tune but one you may easily get bored of. Perhaps more style than substance but then it's aimed at a younger audience so we'll leave it at that. It's not getting any radio airplay anytime soon as, one or two F words may scrape through but, it is riddled with them from start to finish.

CASHMA [2022] - Purple Apartment [Kalombo Records] (Full Album)

CASHMA from Atlanta, GA, featured on the blog in January with her last single "I Like Your Pants" which is included on her new (fourth) album along with another previous single "Body Love".

Apart from the last single nothing else really stands out immediately except perhaps "Night Is On Fire" as it's predominantly  pop/R&B tunes, although "Paradise At Home" is beginning to grow on me. An album that probably needs a few listens.

Samara Lewis [2022] - Who Am I? [Self Released]

This appears to be only the second single from Samara Lewis, the other "Mismatched" released  last July.

Her new single "Who Am I?" is a very pop slanted tune which she co-wrote with Felton Pilate a former member of  Con Funk Shun. A Con Funk shun album has recently appeared in the Amazon Hot New Releases on the back of  Silk Sonic's cover of their "Love's Train" which he Pilate co-wrote with band member Michael Cooper who also sang lead on the song.

MICHELLE [2022] - POSE [Atlantic]

This is a little 'teaser' for the sophomore album "AFTER DINNER WE TALK DREAMS" from MICHELLE due for release on Friday (4 Mar 2022).

It's a four track EP which contains their last three singles and presumably their latest "POSE" which was released on 28 Feb 2022. The latest single is a bit poppy but "THE MESS WE MADE", which was released as a single on 27 Oct 2021, is probably my choice cut. It will be interesting to listen to the new material on the album.

MICHELLE is a group of six friends from New York comprised of Sofia D'Angelo, Julian Kaufman, Charlie Kilgore, Layla Ku, Emma Lee and Jamee Lockard. They formed in 2018 and released a debut album "Heatwave" in 2020.

By the way the capitalisation is theirs ... don't you just hate that?

Kate Usher [2022] - What You Read About Me [Blue Garden Records]

Kate Usher is from Montalk, NY, and released her debut single "What You Read About Me"  today (22 Feb 2022). However, her Soundcloud and YouTube channels have music by Kate Usher & The Sturdy Souls, who released an EP "Shades Of Blue" in 2018 followed by a single "Dreams" in 2020, so this is actually her debut solo release.

Although listed as soul/R&B, I think it's perhaps a tad on the pop side for purists!
