Kenny Hamber [2022] - Open The Door [Quantize Recordings]

A health warning for the purists, cover your ears, as this is a house version of the Darrell Banks classic, "Open The Door To Your Heart", by Kenny Hamber and covered by many. (I feel another Version Excursion brewing!)

To be fair, there is an "Original Soul Funk Mix" which is fairly faithful to the original, and the "DJ Fella Re-Edit" is good, but I'm afraid the "DJ Spen & Reelsoul Radio Edit" doesn't do it for me as it's too club oriented!

Quite a bit was written about Kenny Hamber on the post for his last single, another cover, of The O'Jays' Used Ta Be My Girl" in Aug '22. It should come as no big surprise with Kenny covering this 60s classic, as his career dates back to the mid 60s recording from Philly's Arctic Records and many of his recordings have had exposure on the UK Northern Soul scene over the years.

Originally Banks took the song writing credits and submitted the song to BMI whilst the song's writer Donnie Elbert was on tour. The song is registered at BMI under Elbert's working title "Baby Walk Right In" and not "Open The Door To Your Heart". Elbert discovered what Banks had done after the song became popular and claimed that he actually wrote the song, and all Banks did was speed it up, so took legal action and won and subsequently his name appears alongside Darrell Eubanks'. It's Banks' only writing credit.

In a week where we wrote about Frank Wilson on his birthday, and the 'world's rarest soul record', the Darrel Banks single was issued in the UK on yellow London promos in 1966. It never got a full release as London Records did not have the rights to it so the release was pulled. It was subsequently released by EMI on their Stateside imprint. The only, so far, known London stock copy surfaced in 2014 and was auctioned in Dec 2014 selling for an estimated £14.5k.

LF System [2022] - Hungry (For Love) [Warner Music]

Scotland's LF System are at it again revamping a 70s tune like they did with Silk they have now turned on a 1976 in-demander by Sandy's Gang "Hungry" written by Patrick Adams and Fay Hauser. It was a 7" only but was reissued in 2004 with a Sean P extended edit (included below).

As with their #1 pop hit sample of Silk's "I Can't Stop" they have upped the tempo and given it more of a club/house feel. It seems a bit of an unusual choice because, as far as I'm aware, the Sandy's Gang tune isn't 'that' well known, but then nor was Silk to a mainstream audience!

It has been posted mainly to expose the original version. Old soul boys and girls  may have views on this but at least a younger generation is exploring some lesser know 70s/80s soul recordings which may bring them to a wider audience, as their first single was a sample of Main Ingredient's "Party People" (1981) written by one Luther Vandross!

DoctorSoul [2022] - Keep On Pushing (DoctorSoul Tell Me Why Re - Therapy) [Self Released]

Paris based DJ/remixer/producer DoctorSoul has just done a remix of Al Green's modern soul classic "Keep On Pushing Love" which is only available via Bandcamp.

The original Al Green version was an album only track  ("Don't Look Back" 1993) on CD in the main but did a vinyl issue in Europe and Brazil. Joey Negro (Dave Lee) did a set of four remixes in 1994 released on 12". The best mix is the "Old School Mix" as the others are bit housey / EDM.

45Cat lists a 1994 Arista UK 7" single but without a label scan which I believe is an anomaly as the cat. no. used is the same as the German CD promo issue on RCA! As far as I am aware this was never released as a 7" single except for a 2014 reissue on Outta Sight. If you know different  the please leave a comment.

The song was also featured on Al Green's 1995 album "Your Heart Is In Good Hands".

Lee Wilson [2022] - Love Will Never Do [Self Released] (Full EP)

Lee Wilson, from NYC, is yet another belonging to the Berklee College of Music alumni. He's probably best know for his house tracks on Traxsource (ranked #4 vocalist there in 2021).

His latest four track EP "Love Will Never Do" (released today) is a bit of a change in direction on a couple of tracks, although "Celebration" and "Go To Love" are dance tracks. "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" is a ballad with "Quarantine Zone #QZ" featuring Shortfyuz more of a contemporary R&B style tune.
