Dara Tucker [2023] - Nature Boy [Green Hill Productions]

A jazz standard "Nature Boy", originally recorded by the great Nat King Cole in 1948, is the vehicle for the velvet tones of Dara Tucker as her new single which follows her album "Dara Starr Tucker". released in June. Apparently, she has released the song as her Christmas single.

The song was written by Eden Ahbez who was sued by Herman Yablokoff who claimed that the first two melody lines were similar to a chorus of a song he published in 1935 called "Shvayg Mayn Harts"  ("Be Still My Heart"). They settled out of court.

Many of us may perhaps know the song best via George Benson's more uptempo 1977 version. The song has been covered literally hundreds of times including by Cole's daughter, Natalie, in 1990 and Central Line had their biggest UK pop chart hit with it reaching #21 in 1983 which resulted in an appearance on BBC's Top Of The Pops.

Dara Tucker [2023] - Dara Starr Tucker [Green Hill Productions] (Full Album)

Her latest album, "Dara Starr Tucker", is Ms Tucker's seventh studio album, in addition she has released a live album.

The album includes several covers including  "Annie's Song" (John Denver), "Everything I Wanted" (Billie Eilish), "Can We Pretend" (Bill Withers), the Weill & Anderson standard "September Song", "Try To Remember" (Tom Jones) and a traditional gospel song "A Closer Walk With Thee" along with the remaining six original songs.

Dara was born in Oklahoma into a religious and musical family. Her parents were minister and gospel recording artist Doyle Tucker and singer Lydna Tucker, both now deceased in 2014 and Dara chronicled their loss on her 2017 album "Oklahoma Rain".

She began song writing in 2003 whilst living in Switzerland and moved to Nashville in 2004 to pursue a career in music, releasing her first album in 2009.

Mr Soulsorts highlighted three tracks for us "Scars", "If You Asked Me" and "Can We Pretend" (Bill Withers) (you may remember the song was also covered last year by the UK's Ciyo Brown as the title track of his seventh album). In addition we would also include "Falling".

Roger also relayed that Dara contacted him during lock down asking if he could restore an album cover (for those that don't know, Roger is a graphic designer by profession and does artwork for many artists/labels as a side hustle) for a rare album Joy "I Feel The Spirit" (recorded by her family and originally released in 1979) so that it could be reissued it digitally.

Dara Tucker [2021] - Dreams Of Waking: Music For A Better World [Green Hill Productions] (Full Album)

The latest album from Dara Tucker is one for the jazz heads. It's an album full of jazz covers of standards and classics. Songs from James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Simon & Garfunkel, Marvin Gaye and Randy Newman as well as a few standards that are so old, and been done by so many, that it's difficult to remember who did the original, and one of her own compositions ("Do We Sleep?").

Easy listening / MOR? ... perhaps, but her versions of "Someday We'll All Be Free" and "What's Going On?" are well worth listening to and she delivers all songs with aplomb. 

The Nashville based, Tulsa born, singer has an undeniable talent and delivers her sixth studio album since her 2009 debut "All Right Now" on 28 May 2021 .
