The Winstons v O.C.Smith v The Naturals v Bobby Womack - Color Him Father

It's Father's Day in the UK so here's a few versions of "Color Him Father" which was a big US hit for The Winstons in 1969 written by member Richard Spencer. The flip side was "Amen, Brother", one of the most sampled hip hop breaks in history.

O.C. Smith covered it on his "At Home" album in 1969.

The Naturals as the B side to the excellent cover of Tommy James & The Shondell's "Crystal Blue Persuasion" in 1974 (and of course there's other great versions by The Kelly Brothers and also Joe Bataan (both 1969)), and released again on their 1975 follow up single "Cold Day In Hell").

Bobby Womack recorded it on "Resurrection" in 1994 and it was also on a single as the B side of "Forever Love" which I believe was CD or 12" only.

Ronny Jordan [1994] - Come With Me (Allstar's Funkadelic Jazz Mix) [Island #12 IS 584]

A tune played by Steve Aggasild in the first hour of his Monday evening show was a new one on me. A version of a classic jazz funk tune "Come With Me" (written and recorded by Tania Maria which was recently reissued on 7" by Soul Brother) by Ronny Jordan.

Ronny (real name Robert Simpson) put out nine albums between 1992 and 2009 but sadly died young in 2014 aged only 51. He rose to prominence after featuring on Guru's Jazzamatazz Vol. 1 and later for his acid jazz version of Mils Davis's "So What" (also included below).

If you're interested in both tracks than they were included  on a 7 track Japanese 12" (Island) in  2007.

It was the  "Allstar's Funkadelic Jazz Mix"  that Steve played which features the vocals of Fay Simpson.

Patti LaBelle [1994] - I Can't Tell My Heart What To Do [MCA #MCAD-10870]

A superb album only track by Patti LaBelle from her 1994 (CD only) "Gems" was played today by Gary Van Den Bussche on his lunchtime Starpoint Radio show. I'm not normally a big fan of Patti LaBelle's voice, as I find her a bit 'screechy' and she often 'over eggs' a lot of her songs, but "I Can't Tell My Heart What To Do" is an absolute pearl of a song and delivery.

Gary mixes up the old with the new from across the decades and always manages to find and play loads of hidden gems on his shows that you may have long forgotten or didn't know in the first place. A great show for soul connoisseurs. Catch the show Mon-Fri between 11am-1pm (GMT) on Starpoint Radio. He also does a 'Get Down Saturday Night' show 8pm-10pm (GMT) Sat evenings which, as the title suggests, is more dance oriented than his daytime shows.

Howard Hewett [1994] - Crystal Clear [Calibre #69052-1008]

A marvelous soul/jazz track from ex Shalamar lead Howard Hewett, an album only track taken from his 1994 album 'It's Time'.

Thanks go to Steve Agassild for putting me on to this one when he played it on his radio show last week. Check out TheSoulMaster's podcasts on Mixcloud.

Jesse Graham [1994] - (When I) Think Of My Baby [Ichiban #ICH1175-2 / Izipho Soul #ZP34]

Another one that has recently seen it's first 45 release on Izipho Soul is Jesse Graham. Originally released on his 'Soul Music' album (CD and cassette only) back in 1994.

A lovely and smooth Modern Soul stepper. I feel sorry for some Northern Soul punters who seem to think that soul ended on 31st Dec 1969 as they are missing out on gems like this!

Two singles were released from the album Mr. Mailman / Do Me Baby in 1994 followed by Jodi / I Lied in 1996.  He also released another album on Big Bidness 'Stop The Rain c 1998 from which Lovers Before Friends / Stop The Rain was released as a single in 1998.

He also released another album in 2013 'Sexy Ladies' - not listed on Discogs.

On the B side is Love Talk also taken from the album. Here's the original followed by the Izipho Soul 45 has a re-edit.
