We had a taste from the new album, "After We Play" from Johnny Britt a month ago in the shape of the
single "Butterflies" feat. Will Downing and the title track feat. Brit jazz guitarist Peter White was released as a single in Oct '22. The full album was released on Friday (17 Mar '23).
Will Downing is not the only guest featured on the album as it includes some big
names from the jazz / soul arena including trumpeter Tom Browne, Gerald Albright, Little Anthony &
George Benson among many others.
Eleven of the thirteen songs are originals written by Britt with
assistance from some of the various guest artists. Two classic cover songs
complete the set, a rather good jazz interpretation of Bacharach &
David's "Walk On By" by Britt solo, and Weinstein & Randazzo's "Going Out Of My Head" feat. 82 yr old Jerome 'Little Anthony' Gourdine & George Benson.
The 'obvious' choice cut, from the new tracks, which has most widespread appeal, is "Summer Love" feat. Gerald Albright & Kashan, but it is a very good set across the board and an enjoyable album from
start to finish.
Britt's musical journey began in Cleveland, OH, when he picked up the
trumpet aged 12. He is a classically-trained Jazz trumpet player
studying at the prestigious Conservatoire de Versailles in Paris and has
become a Grammy nominated composer writing for, and collaborating with,
many smooth jazz artists (he has written three #1 hits for Boney
James).
Upon completing his studies in Paris, Johnny returned to the US and
continued his studies in Chicago where he met Otis Williams who hired
him as the youngest ever musical director for The Temptations which led
him to be the co-music producer for the Emmy-winning miniseries "The
Temptations".
He later moved to L.A. and formed Impromp2 with Sean Thomas in 1993 who were signed to Motown's MoJazz label
in 1995 releasing four albums which blended hip hop, soul and jazz after
which he decided to go it alone. As a solo artist he has, to date,
released four albums between 2012-20, the latest being his fifth.
