"Smiling Faces Sometimes" is a song written by Norman Whitfield and  Barrett Strong
originally recorded by The Temptations in April 1971 but
only as an epic twelve minute plus album track on "Sky's The Limit", although it was released as a single in the UK the following
year. A month after the Tempts recorded it
The Undisputed Truth released it as their second single which
reached #2 R&B and #3 Billboard Hot 100.  They never again hit the
    top 10.
The Temptations would later return the favour(!) as The Undisputed Truth
were first to record "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" in May 1972 (#24 R&B / #63 hot 100) and The Tempts went on to
release it in July and achieved their fourth Billboard Hot 100 #1 with
      it.
Later versions were recorded by Rare Earth (1973) and
David Ruffin (1974) and other versions have been recorded
since including by Angie Stone on her 2016 "Covered In Soul" album.
Today (19 Nov 2021) The Undisputed Truth's version of  "Smiling
Faces Sometimes" receives a Phoenician Order Remix.

Definitely the best version for me is the Temptations from their fantastic LP "Sky's The Limit".
