VA [2023] - Champion (An Original BBC Soundtrack) [0207 Records / Def Jam] (Partial Album)

At the end of June the first track from the soundtrack for a BBC eight part musical series, "Champion", (which commenced on 1 Jul) was released by  RAY BLK (who is one of the actors in a lead role) with "My Girl".

The full soundtrack of 26 tracks was released on 14 Jul with most of the tracks being rap/grime/hip-hop (or whatever you want to call it but is definitely isn't soul music) but one does stand out like a sore thumb from Shola Ama with "Stolen". There are two version of the song as there is a remix featuring Deja Bowens.

We've cherry picked from the soundtrack the songs more appropriate for this blog to save you the hassle. There's two from RAY BLK, one from Shola Ama and five from Deja Bowens.

Also included is a music video with new acoustic version of RAY BLK's "My Girl" which we think we prefer to the original version. It doesn't appear to have been officially released as a single, as yet.

Shola Ama [2023] - Not Us [Ferocious Label Services]

It's been a bit of a slog trying to uncover good new music today (and this week) but here's one of better releases today from Shola Ama with "Not Us" which is her first single for a year.

You may remember Ms Ama for her first big hit, a cover of Randy Crawford's hit "You Might Need Somebody" way back in 1997. The song was actually recorded first by Turley Richards in Dec 1979, and Ama's version went higher than Crawford's reaching #4 whilst Crawford's reached #11 and didn't chart at all stateside.

London born Shola signed to Warner Brothers aged 16 and released her debut album "Much Love" in 1997 which produced three UK Top 10 pop hits.
