Lois Levin [2023] - Revisioned EP [Baltic Jazz Recordings] (Full EP)

We were introduced to Lois Levin in Feb ('23) with a reimagined jazz rendition of The Clash's "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" as the first releases on the new Liverpool based Baltic Jazz Recordings label. Subsequent releases by the label have been a cover of Culture Club's "Changing Every Day" by Ni Maxine and an album "Revisioned" on which Steve Levine reimagined eight songs predominantly from the 70s & 80s.

The label's latest offering is a five track EP also titled "Revisioned" (could get confusing)  which primarily features Lois Levin and includes songs that she has written.

Leven wrote "Burden" when she was 15 whilst trying to understand her father's alcoholism growing up. She released it as her debut single in Jul '21. The EP includes two 'revisioned' versions, the full length and a radio edit which is still a minute longer than the 2021 original (live video performance below)  and is a much more soulful rendition.

She also wrote two of the other three songs, "LaLa (I Don't Wanna Talk About It)" and "Pheromones", with the final song being a cover of the Christine McVie written "Why", a Fleetwood Mac album track from their 1977 eponymous album (which has already been playlisted by Jazz FM's Robbie Vincent).

All tracks have been skilfully produced by Steve Levine.

Baltic Jazz Recordings [2023] - Re:Visioned [Baltic Jazz Recordings] (Full Album)

You may recall earlier in the year a couple of singles from the newly established Baltic Jazz Recordings. The first was an 'unlikely' jazz cover of The Clash's "Should I Stay Or Should I Go?" (1982) by Lois Levin  in Feb. It was followed in April by Ni Maxine covering a Culture Club album track "Changing Every Day" ("Colour By Numbers" 1983). 

They have subsequently released anther cover in June of Chic's "São Paulo" from their 1977 debut, self-titled, album (also released as the single B side to "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)".

All three singles now feature on an eight track album "Re:Visioned" which also includes reimagined versions of:

"Super Strut" (Deodato "Deodato 2" 1973)

"Luv Pact" written by Jussi Halme and Mika Kurvinen (aka Misha) who recorded it in Dec 2019 and it appeared on "Midnight Sun" in March 2020.

"P.C.M. Interpolation" written by Ian Ritchie and Steve Levine and released as a single credited as "Produced By Steve Levine" in 1984.

"Spiral" (The Crusaders "Those Southern Knights" 1976)

"Never Be The Same" (Ronnie Laws & Pressure "Pressure Sensitive" 1975)

The album has been produced by Steve Levine who selected all the songs. Steve produced many of Culture Club's 80s hits and there three platinum selling albums. He also worked with many UK punk bands in the late 70s/80s such as The Clash (hence the inclusion of "Should I Stay Or Should I Go?". He has won many awards including a Grammy for his work with Deniece Williams.

Baltic Jazz Recordings feat. Ni Maxine [2023] - Changing Every Day [Baltc Jazz Recordings]

We had hoped that we had caught up with most of the best releases over the Easter vacation but still more are coming out of the woodwork.

The second release from the newly founded, Liverpool based, Baltic Jazz Recordings and incidentally also the second release from Ni Maxine who is also from Liverpool. You may recall the first being Lois Levin with a jazz interpretation of The Clash "Should I Stay Or Should I Go".

In fact the label has once again plundered the 80s songbook and, if you are of a certain age, then you may recognise the song "Changing Every Day" as it was written and recorded by Culture Club on their "Colour By Numbers" album in 1983. It should come as no big surprise when you learn that Culture Club producer Steve Levine is involved with the label and produced the first single.
