Doc Shaw Feat. Lester L-2 Shaw & Retsel Shaw [2011] - The Sun Will Rise Again (My Life LP) [Pocket Power Productions #B0050GEDUM]

I've just been prompted to post this after it being mentioned today on SoulTracks who state that it is being released on Friday (28 May 2021) as part of  '1921...The Black Wall Street Music Project' to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre.

The Tulsa Race Massacre occurred on 31st May 1921 / 1st Jun 1921 and is described as the worst incident of racial violence America has witnessed and was perpetrated on the wealthiest black population in US, at the time, hence called Black Wall Street, resulting in 36 deaths, 800 hospitalisations and 6,000 African-Americans being imprisoned.

The song is a very classy, deep and meaningful ballad and was originally released in 2011 by Doc Shaw on his 'This Life' album with his sons Lester (L2) and Retzel featured on this track. Doc Shaw hails from Tulsa and wrote the song in 1984.

Another single by Kerosene is also being released on Friday and both have been posted on The Ovation Agency SoundCloud page, who are sponsoring the project.

JmAY [2011] - I Won't Hurt You [Self Released]

Following on from the Smokey Norful track posted earlier, I got a message from 'bluesky' informing me that it was actually a sample of a JmAY track 'I Won't Hurt You' from 2011. I found it on Amazon (link on image below) and it's still available for download which I did at exactly the same time bluesky sent me an mp3 so now I've got two! It is also still available on Spotify (see below).

He also informed me that it is due out imminently on Andy Lothian's  'It's Soul Time' label but has been delayed owing to Covid and the backlog for demand at pressing plants. They posted an update on 2 Apr 2021. The flip side is also excellent, Lexi Feat. Gene Moore - 'I Choose You' originally released on her 2018 album 'Just Listen' on Motown Gospel.

I do now actually recall the track (the name JmAY rang a bell) as it was doing the rounds in about 2012 as Mark Merry and Mick O'Donell both played it on their radio shows and Brian Goucher ripped one onto a carver (as it was mp3 only) and played it out, and apparently Soul Sam was also playing it, but I hadn't made the connection with Smokey Norful.

There is only one video of the track on YT and the sound quality is poor and it looks like it's being played off a (white label) carver ... which 'may' account for the poor sound?

I've linked both tracks to compare side by side.

Shuya Okino Feat. Navasha Daya v Rose Royce - Still In Love

A superb cover of a slightly obscure Rose Royce track released in 1982, their second release on Epic after leaving Whitfield.

It's just had a 'shed load' of digital remixes last Nov (2020) - no fewer than 12 released on Glitterbox and was released on vinyl 12" on 18 Mar 2021.

It was originally released in 2011 on CD only album 'Destiny' and was also issued on a 12" EP both only released in Japan.

You can Listen to all 12 remixes here.

Mary Mary [2011] - Survive [Columbia #88697 62330 2]

Just came across this track which I'd completely forgotten about whilst sorting out my digital files, so thought I'd share it as it is sooo good!

Gospel tinged duo Mary Mary (Erica and Trecina 'Tina' Atkins-Campbell) burst onto the scene in 2000 with their 'Shackles (Praise You)' from their debut album 'Thankful'.  This track is album only (as far as I can tell as you can never really tell these days with digital releases!) from their 2011 album 'Something Big'.

Big Mel [2011] - What's Going On Today / New Boy Friend [Tate]

Following on from the Big Mel post for his latest album, here's a couple of tracks from his first solo album released in 2011 titled 'That's Luv'

Big Mel [2011] - (Pop, Pop, Pop) Goes My Mind

A great version of LeVert's (Pop, Pop, Pop) Goes My Mind, which I don't know whether was ever released as was filmed as a tribute to Gerald and Sean Levert (both sons of The O'Jays Eddie Levert) who both died early in 2006 (aged 40) and 2008 (aged 39) respectively. Big Mel's voice reminds me of Alexander O'Neal.

Earl White [2011] - If You Don't Know [Cool Ruckus]

Mixing it up a bit.  Following the previous post for Earl White Jr., I came across this track by a different Earl White released in 2011.

Xxception To The Rule [2011] - Angel In Disguise [Daxwood]

A superb piece of soul - mellow and deep, from an obscure group/duo who appear to have released only one album 'Then And Now' in 2011, from which this track is taken.  The track has also featured on a compilation Daxwood Soul II New Old School in 2010.

I can't find any info about the group (although I did find their Facebook page) but my instinct tells me that these album tracks may be older tracks (possibly from the 80s) that are only just seeing the light of day?  I gather from their Facebook page that the CD album was released Sep 2011 and was sold out by 27 Sep.

I managed to find the whole album on YouTube.  It has quite a mix of styes soul, jazz, gospel, hip-hop so I've selected what I consider the best tracks only.

I'm Through With You

This one reminds me of Anita Baker.

Loving You Is The Best Thing

This track also featured on Soul Discovery With Mick O'Donnell compilation CD.
