Toy Taha [2024] - Thrill Is Gone [Face Music Entertainment]

Toy Taha is a singer-songwriter and arranger from Philadelphia, PA, who began singing at the tender age of 5 singing along to her parents and grandparents records, which ranged from records by Whitney Houston, Phyllis Hyman, Teena Marie, Anita Baker, Stephanie Mills to Muddy Waters, Bobby Blue Bland, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, B.B. King and Ray Charles.

Toy started out writing poems out of solitude, which developed into raps, which transformed into vocal songs. Her childhood and adolescence revolved around performing arts singing on the Philadelphia National Choir, creating cheer & dance routines for the West Oak Lane Wildcats. However, too shy, she seldom allowed anyone other than immediate family hear her sing.

In 2013 she released a promotional project, "I Am Woman", which gained a lot of attention but she was not exactly happy with the final product as the project was released raw, unmixed and unmastered. So she rededicated herself to improving her craft and honing in on her skills to deliver a more quality body of work and also switched her career from Kinesiology to Nursing.

Plucking up courage to perform live, Toy started performing open mic nights in 2021 and with her band at live venues in Philadelphia.

We first came across her music via the single "Suite FX" (produced by Grammy winner Dreamlife) in April '22 which was included on "EIGHT" in July '22, an excellent eight track EP/album with several tracks registering on many charts worldwide.

Her first new material since "EIGHT" is a self-written song, "Thrill Is Gone", produced by Lorenzo Johnson (Ledisi, Maysa). It's a change in direction from the neo soul of "EIGHT" to a more, of what she describes herself as, blues and soul. It's an autobiographical song in which she chronicles the complex emotions a woman experiences  after a relationship breaks down and where she realises that it is over and has no interest in salvaging it.

Toy tells us "The song is a fusion of blues and soul and it is so important to me as a multi-genre artist to always stay grounded in my roots and foundation to preserve the culture because this music is the origin of Black and American music and I feel this song we’ve created is not only timeless, but a nod to the innovators that have inspired me".

We received the song direct from Toy several weeks ago which we're afraid got buried in the dozens of promos we receive each week, so we apologise to her for not posting it earlier, however, our radio partner Steve Aggasild has been playing it on his shows for the last couple of weeks.
