The new album, "The Age of Pleasure" by Janelle Monáe is released today. Not one for the
faint-hearted as it is quite diverse, but at least it's not the same old,
same old. Predominantly, many of the tracks are reggae inspired.
Grace Jones makes a 'cameo' appearance on "Ohh La La" rapping (well she never really did 'sing' did she) in French on a song
that seems to borrow from her 1980 track "Private Life" written by Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders) which has a song written
by Manchester's Joy Division of the flip.
At least four tracks have been pre-released over the last couple of
months and have been featuring in the Amazon Hot New Releases Top 100, so
inevitably, now that the full album is released, they will
proliferate.
The tracks that appeal most to us, and we think may appeal to soulies,
are "Black Sugar Beach", "The Rush", "Water Slide" (the one most likely), "The French 75", "A Dry Red".
Janelle Monáe Robinson was signed to Bad Boy Records in 2008 by Sean
'Puffy' Combs and released her debut album in 2010. Her the current album
is her fourth studio album.
