VA [2022] - Secret Nuggets of Wise Northern Soul [Omnibus Records & Tapes]

A fifteen track compilation of, mainly, lesser known Northern Soul tracks from the Old Town stable of labels (i.e. Old Town, Barry etc.) "Secret Nuggets of Wise Northern Soul"

The best known tracks will probably be Jesse Johnson "Left Out", The Gypsies "It's A Woman's World" and Lester Young "Barefootin' Time In Chinatown". As with many compilations touting Northern Soul  as a marketing aid, some of these are NOT Northern soul e.g. Jimmy Forrest "Night Train" is jazz and would never get a spin on any NS dancefloor, nor is Buddy & Ella Johnson "I Got To Talk To Somebody".

The picks from, what is lets' face it, a pretty mediocre bunch, which hardly portrays the best in NS, are Peggy Scott "Things Have More Meaning Now" which appears to be a promo only release from 1973 (which at a stretch is a crossover tune not Northern Soul), Thelma Jones "Oh, Oh, Here Comes The Heartbreak" (written by Robert Banks) and The Gypsies above which was bootlegged in the mid 70s to satisfy demand for it. The Gypsies were later named The Flirtations (who included Viola Billups aka Pearly Gates who had a few disco tracks in the 70s/80s) and moved to England in 1966.

A couple of glaring omissions, and possibly the biggest two singles on the label for the NS crowd, are The Sparkels "Try Love (One More Time)" and The Fiestas "Think Smart".
