DJ Kool Keith [2022-05-29] - Soulful Slow Jams [Soul Groove Radio]

This week's installment  of Soulful Slow Jams across the decades with 'The Soul Emperor' DJ Kool Keith.

I hadn't realised that Z.Z. Hill did "That Ain't The Way You Make Love" co-written by Lamont Dozier's brother Reginald and McKinley Jackson and unsurprisingly produced by Lamont Dozier. It was also recorded, and is a big modern soul tune, by Reggie Garner a year earlier in 1974. It makes you almost wonder if Reggie Garner was a pseudonym for Reggie Dozier but I don't think it is? Hill's version is album only ("Keep On Lovin' You" (1975)) and featured Edna Wright (Sandy Wynns), Shirley Jones (Jones Girls), Dennis Perry (brother of Greg, Jeff et al) and Ty Hunter (The Glass House), amongst others, on backing vocals.

I had a feeling that someone else recorded the song but was confusing it with Jimmy Jones - "Ain't Nothing Wrong Makin' Love The First Night" which is another wonderful tune (don't ask me why I thought of this song it must be linked somewhere in my brain).

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 21 (May 2022 Wk 21) Spotify Playlist

SoulStrutter selections of the best releases this week
(May 2022 Wk 21)
In no particular order other than tempo.

All tracks in this week's playlist were released in the last week (most from Friday) but it was tough going selecting a dozen 'outstanding' tracks for this week's main Dirty Dozen.

The new Michon Young album ("LLE V3)", her first since 2018, was released on Friday consisting of 18 tracks, but removing the interludes and two already released as singles leaves 12 new songs. Four tracks were sent out on promo "Say What You Mean", "Try Me", Gonna Make Sure" and "Cause I Love You" with the latter also being released as a single on 13 May. It's taken a while to digest the album with nothing clearly standing out over the other tracks but the ones that are emerging, for me, are the first three promos along with "Secrets" and "Only You".

The debut self-titled EP by The Voice contestant Khalea Lynee should appeal to lovers of traditional soul music, the two best tracks are included in this week's playlist.

There is a track included from Honey & Blue's "BLOOM" album which is technically a reissue as it's a Deluxe edition of the album released in 2020. Meagham Maples is also an old track released as as single in Feb. but is included as the choice cut on her debut album '1763" released on Friday. Rockwell Hallman released an album "Rockwell" and one of the two included tracks has already been released as a single in 2019. All highlighting how much of a stretch it has been narrowing it down this week.

The track that I keep coming back to this week is one that was actually the first pre-released as a single back in January from Nanette's debut album "Bad Weather" released on Friday. I've watched as four tracks have been drip fed over the last few months thinking that the album was a bit too R&B oriented but I love this track.  Another that has been out before is thuy "Universe" but has been remixed for her Deluxe edition album released on Friday.

So this week's SoulStrutter Selection of the Week goes to Nanette "Dream Girl" from "The Neo Dirty Dozen". I'm pleased to see that last week's selection, Juanita Wynn "Make It Right", has entered the Global Soul Chart this week but as Franklin (the chart compiler) stated on the show it will be pushed to do really well as it is hindered by being a Bandcamp only release.

Global Soul Chart 28th May 2022 (Week 21)

28th May 2022
The Global Soul chart broadcast on Sat 28th May as it is every Saturday between  5pm-7pm (GMT) on Global Soul Radio.

Each week around a dozen or more 'Breakers' are interspersed with chart entries. These will be posted separately.

Raheem Devaughn stays on top for his second week and only third week on the chart. There were seven new entries, (four of them tipped last week Sidibe, Kadeem Tyrell, Jordan Lee and Juanita Wynn). Two entered straight into the top 10, with the highest being Sidibe at #3 (who could well be challenging Raheem DeVaughn next week?) followed by Kadeem Tyrell at #5.

The two highest climbers were new entries last week with Gavin Holligan up 9 places and Morgan Munroe up 3. The other two new entries from last week (Thais Lona and Roszunn) also moved up the chart.

All six predicted to go last week have gone along with Meadoe Soar. Next week's loser predictions are Sly Johnson, Tony Walk, Lenora and Grant Alexander which all look almost certain to go and I think J. Brown may join them.

Summary: 6 risers, 6 fallers, 1 non-mover and 7 new entries

New Entries: Sidibe, Kadeem Tyrell, Devon Howard, SunniDread, Jordan Lee, Juanita Wynn, J. Brown

Highest Risers: Gavin Holligan (+9), Morgan Munroe (+4), Roszunn (+3)

Biggest Fallers: Grant Alexander (-11), Lenora (-10), Sly Johnson (-9)

Losers: Zay Blaze, Clowette, Meadoe Jenee, Sierra Sellers, Kayla Amor, Desmond Parson, Gwen Bunn
